Nicked from the Old Man's fridge in November 2023 and drunk in March 2024.

L: It is as amber as amber can be, with a bright white marshmallow head. After the upwardly cascading head settles, no carbonation is seen.

S: Sweet malt, vanilla, mild toffee. Reasonably neutral, all told.

T: My overriding impression is tobacco leaves, tea and sweet, brown sugar. The mild bitterness enhances the tobacco note. It's slightly sweet, so it's likely something best drunk as a wedge between other beers, but nothing says, please don't drink more of me. This is the epitome of an easy-drinking beer.

M: Pillow soft. Carbonation is almost absent. The creamy marshmallow-like head adds a decadence to each swallow.

O: This is undoubtedly better on draught than what you get on a can, at least in my memory of drinking this in bulk 25 years ago. I don't know that I'd drink this consecutively these days, but this would be something I'd consider every third beer or so if drinking Irish for the night.

Cheers!

Purchased at the Sydney Gaelic Club/ Molly Malones Darlinghurst, Sydney

Appearance: sensational. Beautifully thick, tight creamy head. The upwards cascading effect leads to a beautiful ruby read colour, almost bronze like in appearance. A lovely ale to look at.

Aroma: Nose is hard to pick without dipping ones sniffer in the head. Some light floral hops, bit of grain is mostly it I fear. Some light white bread toasted malts. It does smell clean and refreshing, not too dissimilar to the classic European lager smell which I enjoy.

Flavour: Deliciously smooth. Creamy head, like a milkshake. Sweet malt, Cereal grain, floral hops and a smooth bitterness at the end.

Feel: Smooth as silk. Low carbonation. Good mouthfeel.

Overall: Nitrogen beers are awesome. Great simple flavours, great sipper. Shame it's not on tap more often in Sydney outside Irish bars.

A lot like Guinness. Sweet and creamy, exceptionally smooth. However the taste isnt as good, mainly from my lack of palate. Best when extremely cold, however very heavy. It feels like I could drink 3 or 4 standard beers such as Coors, budweise or kokanee. I've found it goes best with salty tastes, and strangely watermelon. It's nice to enjoy 1-2 of these after a long day.

draft pour into guinness pint glass. red with a creamy off-white nitro head. not a lot to the nose. some light hops. same with the taste. just not a lot to it. not offensive or anything just kind of bland and watery. pretty drinkable. super smooth, full and creamy mouthfeel. pretty good concept here. it’s no guinness and i’m not sure i like it as much as smithwicks’s but it’s pretty good.

Let's be honest, it's an absolutely beautiful ale to pour and look at. Dark, dark red with a beautiful silky white top. Subtle enough on the nose, slight toffee, phenols and malts. Taste pretty much follows, not overly complex or demanding. Initially creamy feel, slightly thinner finish. Look it's not a knockout artist but it's a classic Irish red ale and, as always, easy to knock back.

Got to admit, I am not a fan of this. I will be very blatant about it and say that I do not like this at all. No carbonation (at least not in the usual sense), no taste, feels like you are drinking bitter water. It was a waste, never again.
