This beer pours a cloudy brown as do the other Rochefort beers. The aroma is very much the same as the others too. The taste is not as strong as the 8 or the 10 but it has a very strong hint of coffee - which I did not care for. I recommend the 8 over all others.

Foggy brownish amber color, almost like a watered down coffee, with a massive off white head that dissapates quickly, leaving no lacing.

Dark fruit, slightly grainy, yeasty with a slight grassy hop aroma. Smells pretty rich and tasty.

Pretty sweet with a super complex flavor of dark fruits, the same grainy malts, a touch of the usual banana yeast. Well balanced and complex, with a taste that changes throughout the sip. Very nice.

Moderately heavy with a pretty light carbonation feel. Very creamy and smooth. Like a light dessert.

Definitely not my favorite in their line (8 and 10 being a couple of my all time favorite beers), but still very good. No alcohol presence detected, and very easy drinking. A warming delight.

Appearance: Pours a fluffy, off white head shaded with crimson of about two fingers that sits atop the rim of the glass. Body is nearly purple.

Aroma: Big, bold, dark fruits. Plums and dates with brown sugar.

Taste: Plum, raisin, with a candy like sweetness. Complex and seems to change constantly as you drink it then vanishes quickly.

Mouthfeel: Awesome, velvety coating with different layers but somehow has a light bodied feel.

Overall: A beer that kind of slips through your fingers in a good way. Very complex with flavors and aromas that present themselves then dissipate quickly

Rochefort 6, the baby brother of the Rochefort series. I've been looking forward to seeing how this one stacks up to the others, Rochefort 8 and 10, a couple of my favorite Belgians. 33 cL bottle into Chimay goblet.

Appearance (4.25/5): Huge towering off-white, 3 finger head. Brown body. Fizzy, tight bubbles, reduces fairly quickly. Doesn't have the head retention of the 8. Head reduces to a very small disc that sits atop the beer.

Smell (4.5/5): Brown sugar, dark fruits, big yeast mustiness, some spice, perhaps clove, pepper.

Taste (4.75/5): classic dubbel flavors with the characteristic Rochefort yeast. Wow. Big raisin-y flavor mixed with the sweet dark bread characteristics beautifully. Brown sugar. Bold yeastiness to it, but not overbearing to my palate. Similar to Westmalle Dubbel. No alcohol to speak of in the flavor. Flavor really opens up as it warms.

Mouthfeel (4.5/5): very smooth, much lighter than either the 8 or (certainly) the 10. Quite pleasant medium carbonation and goes down easy. Great drinkability.

Overall (4.5/5): Rochefort 6 does the name proud. This is one of the best dubbels I've ever had–tons of character, subtle and complex, beautiful to look at and a joy to have slide over the tongue and down the hatch. The 6 puts together the classic components of Belgian Dark Ales–brown sugar and dark fruit flavors, creamy mouthfeel, and a complex yeasty spiciness–in a way that distinguishes it from others. My guess is the house yeast used by Rochefort. Bottom line: excellent beer. Don't die before having one.

11.2 oz botte poured into tulip glass

A: Totally cloudy brown, orangeish in the light, big frothy head settles and stays around .5 finger

S: Slightly tart/funky, mild toasted malt, not "sour" just tangy, bready too, very intricate and delicious

T: Starts with that same slight tang although more mild, malt dominates, finishes with normal sweet caramel malt, nothing too special but still good

M: Not too dry, feels "bright", very small bubbles, light but chewy

O: A far above average beer, but I'd still classify it as really good, not excellent.

Appearance: Dark apricot. Great, sudsy head at first.
Smell: Pepper, alcohol, grapes, and honey biscuits.
Taste: Alcohol, biscuits, some honey, and pepper.
Mouthfeel: Quite carbonated.

This brew is savory. It has a peppery smell and taste that is warming. Interestingly, the alcoholic smell calms a bit as the drink warms. Sadly, the drink continues to mellow and almost takes on a watery taste as the cold leaves it. Don't get me wrong, this is a great drink. However, it's one of the few that I've enjoyed more when it was colder. I would probably get this again...well, I would probably get the 8 or the 10 before this any day.

Cherry amber with piles of pink-tinged tan froth that settles to film that sticks with a steady stream of trailers up the middle.
Wax, dough, flowers, stone fruit, slight barnyard tang and fresh herbs on the nose - deep and complex.
Cherry scone, cinnamon, golden raisins, unripe red plum and yellow apple, a touch of wax, then clove and star anise to end.
Apple skin finish and numbing Canada mint linger.
Light to medium, fizzy, a bit of heat, creamy, crisp.

Great nose, and orchard fruit notes are there, but all a bit understated. Residual sugars give it nice body as it opens, managing to be both smooth and crisp. Not as big as the Achel nor as deep as the Westmalle, though maybe more drinkable for it. In balance, though I don't note any particular hop character.

Buckeye is right (no shock there) in that this is a lighter example of the style (no figs), but very well done for that.

Just a solid dubbel. I had this back to back with St Bernadus Pater 6. I like the St Bern a little more just based on the mouthfeel. This beer is great no doubt. Just a little weak on the finish. A little too, well little. It washes out at the end.

That being said, I would drink again at the drop of a hat. Tasty tasty beer.

I gotta get over to Belgium. Stat

Muddy looking dark brown, chocolate color. Extremely cloudy, as close to as opaque as you can get. Lots of yeast sediment floating in the glass. Some dark floaters. A very aggressive pour produced a huge tan head with pretty good retention. It finally settled to a thin head with lots of dark brown spots within it. I presume left from the last couple pours from the bottom of the bottle and the yeast that was left behind. Not much lacing. The aroma is heavy malt as I would expect. Chocolate, dark fruits, caramel. The taste is more of the same, but only enhanced a great deal. Lots of milk chocolate. A woodiness hits about half way, maybe oak? Alcohol is present but not overwhelming. Medium to full velvety mouthfeel. Have now had Rochefort 6, 8, and 10. They were all really good, but this one might have been my favorite. Definitely the most drinkable.

11.2 oz. bottle poured into an Orval chalice.

This Trappist dubbel pours a gorgeous, slightly hazy blood red, close to crimson in complexion. Topped by a swiftly fading head of foam, it leaves no lacing or alcohol legs behind. There are highlights of orange and amber when it is head to the light, and a ring of foam stays around the outside of the beer. Excellent looking stuff.

I can't compare this to 8 or 10, but this is a great smelling beer with lots of subtleties. Like many Belgian beers, it is full of aromas of dark fruit - I'm reminded particularly of cherries and maybe some black grapes as well. There is a notable bready sweetness with some caramel as well and just a whiff of alcohol at the end. Little hop presence. Very nicely structured.

A dash of earthy bitterness in the front leads into a big smack of fruity, malty flavors on the middle of the tongue: rum-soaked cherries, raisins, and grapes, leading to a biscuity, bready sweetness with some alcohol dryness on the finish. There is some very mild clove-like spice that emerges as the beer warms as well, and throughout, the beer remains very sweet and drinkable. Great stuff.

Like many Beligans, Rochefort 6 has a spritzy but not fizzy carbonation. It finishes dry and sweet with lingering flavors from the malt and has a relatively light body.

If you're not ready to dive in with bigger beers like Westy 12, Chimay Blue, and the like, this is a good starting point. I was able to buy this doll for less than $6 at my local bottle shop. Absolutely worth checking out if you're curious about genuine Trappist ale.
