Pours a satisfying dark brown-black opaque color.
Short lived forthy head that laced the glass with abundance.
An enchanting nose of coffee, roasted malt, hops--

Flavor wasn't quite up to the beer's aroma-- but quite satisfying and what I think is dead on for a Porter, although--- the flavor was somewhat one-dimensional, mostly bitter hops I would have liked more toasted malt, coffee... but that might have put this beer too close to a Stout.

Mouthfeel is good-- finish dissipates too quickly.

Overall-- very enjoyable-- I can see putting down several bottles in a sitting.
I'll be adding a few more bottles of this libation to my beer larder.

Appearance: Rich dark almost black. Some deep reds and browns when held to light. Head is creamy, dark tan, and leaves some serious lacing. Decent retention leaves a creamy, dense collar and thin cap.

Smell: Super rich chocolate. Chocolate malts, milk chocolate, cocoa, and bitter nibs. Roasty sweetness. Big sweetness tempered by the seriously roasted profile. Spent coffee grinds. Vaguely toasted. Mild citrus edge. Smells closer to a stout, lacking that earthy/grassy thing I associate with porters. Some nuttiness.

Taste: Big roasted malts. Chocolate and caramel malts. Some breadiness. Cocoa nibs, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate bar. Old coffee grinds. Some gritty grassy notes. Buried citrus from the hops, but it's minimal. Incredibly roasted. More of the nuttiness from the nose coupled with that distinct earthiness that belongs.

Mouthfeel: Slightly creamy. Lightly moderate carbonation with an overall medium body. Some lingering dryness.

Overall: This beer is the gorillas from Congo.

A solid porter that pushes the envelope toward American stout. Massively roasted and solid all around. Another MBC win.

First had: bottle from Pinocchio's beer garden, Media, PA

Decanted into a Firestone Walker Proprietor's Series snifter, nice thick pour, dark brown-black color with a firm half inch of creamy tan head that receded to a thick ringlet and coated the glass with lacing. Simple aroma, dark malts, fairly roasty, touches of chocolate and coffee. Porter-ish. Similar taste, dark roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate and light coffee, mild earthy hops. Seemed like a tiny oxidized off-flavor in there, but well within tolerance. Just about full-bodied, nice and smooth, not a particularly distinctive porter, but still very nice overall.

Poured into a tulip pint.

Appearance
Opaque black with 4 fingers of creamy light brown head. Has great retention that leaves behind a nice fluffy layer of lacing.

Nose
Dark chocolate, espresso, nuts, vanilla, roasted barley and light citrusy hops.

Taste
Sweet roasted barley and raisin. The bitter dark notes are all mid-palate with dark baker’s chocolate and light notes of espresso. Some almonds and nuances of vanilla mingled in there. Hop notes of grapefruit and pine hang on the backend.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, smooth, bitter and dry.

Overall
An even mix of sweet dark fruits and dark roasts. Starts sweet and finishes bitter. A rather complex American Porter.

A-Pours a very dark hue. Pretty much black. Nice thin head is tannish in color. Head leaves misty lacing stains along my glass.

S-Soapy hops and roasted coffee. Black licorice/anise with milk and dark chocolate. Hops are sudsy but are also a bit medicinal. Interesting nose.

T-The same hop profile is accompanied by a burnt/charred malt. Burnt coffee grounds and bitter dark chocolate. A pinch of tobacco. Smokey. Definitely quite bitter. Light chalk. Plenty to discover here.

M-Has just enough roundness in the body. Yet it is still very drinkable. Moderate to high bitterness. Carbonation is very soft.

O/D-Another Maine gem. Not in the same realm as Lunch, Zoe, Peeper and MO. But I do see it fitting in the same stratosphere as Collaboration Time 1 and Mean Old Tom. I would say it falls somewhere in between the last two. A bitter, individual Porter. Definitely down my alley.

Gorgeous appearance. The liquid poured near pitch black and was topped by a super dense and creamy, three-finger crown that eventually fell to a thick, frothy cap. The head deposited a drippy curtain of lacing all down the glass.

The nose was fantastic as well. A smoky, roasted malty quality was immediately detectible, and it was nicely complimented by some sweet, powdered cocoa and freshly pulled espresso notes. Hints of caramel malts came through as well. I also picked up some dark fruits.

While the nose was rich and robust, the flavor profile was a bit underwhelming. A mix of roasted and sweet caramel malts came through on the front end. Touch of cold coffee. As the liquid moved along the palate, the beer turned remarkably dry, bitter and acrid. Mineral-like. Charred malts dominated. A touch of earthy hops appeared as well.

The mouthfeel was quite ordinary. Thinner in body than I anticipated for a 7.5% ABV porter. The liquid contained a finely bubbled, mild effervescence.

King Titus started very strong but finished a bit weak in the flavor department. Although this beer is listed as an American porter, it reminded me more of an Irish dry stout (and it would be a fantastic one at that). Perhaps the elevated alcohol presence bumped it out of the aforementioned category.

This particular bottle of beer is nicely 1-2 weeks fresh and I have high hopes going into it. The beer pours a lovely brown black with a thick coffee-ice-cream-colored head on top with big rocky bubbles that slowly shore up into a finely compacted unit, leaving behind thick sticky rings and slabs of lacing. This beer smells roasty with a smooth, creamy smell that reminds me of a milk stout’s lactic sugars. There is also a nice strong nutty smell in there reminiscent of a hazelnuts and pecans, and as it warms up slight alcohol spice can be smelt. The beer tastes like a pleasant blend of a nutty brown ale and a roasty stout, which is just fine by me. It begins with creamy notes that still remind me of the lactic sugars in a milk stout, before opening up into medium roasted malt notes, which are quite quickly melded with big nutty flavors with a slight grapefruit and pine sitting in the back of the flavor and resonating more in the aftertaste alongside the pleasant roasty coffee lingering. The aftertaste also occasionally steps into nougat bar flavoring for me, especially right after the beer has left the mouth, which is really quite pleasant and tasty. This beer feels smooth, velvety, and creamy on the tongue, with little to no hint of carbonation. It sits a little thin in the mouth, but this makes it all the easier to drink, and it more than makes up for being thin with flavor and pleasant texture. The beer leaves the mouth slightly sticky-dry with some saliva on the fringes, and thin ichor of stickiness coating the mouth. Overall, this is a superb porter, and another great offering from the Maine Beer Company. Is this my favorite from them, though? Probably not, as that place is still reserved for Zoe, but it holds its own beside Mean Old Tom and even Lunch. This beer is more than worthy of a try.

Appearance: Dark, dark brown - pours with a nicely sized light brown head - keeps a wispy cap, a nice ring, and some lovely streaks and spots of lacing - looks like a stout, but who cares?

Smell: Super roasty malts - nicely roasted, and not burnt - coffee grounds and chocolate - dark chocolate and some dark chocolate chips - some depth in the malts with some chewy-smelling caramel malts - slightly nutty - some hoppy aromas, too, mostly citrus

Taste: So, so roasty - roasted grains, dark roast coffee - very chocolatey, with dark chocolate, some semisweet chocolate, and cocoa - dry, with some roasty bitterness, but a nice complexity to the malts - caramel malts, and some earthy tones - vague nutty flavor - some citrus in the background for balance

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely dry, nicely smooth, nicely carbonated, lightly chewy

Overall: This gives my jimmies a nice, unrustled feeling

This is a solid porter. It's gloriously roasty, balanced, and clean. It's not mind blowing, but it is great. A bit expensive, but I guess it's for the gorillas or something. Good for them.

I love this brewery; they've made consistently good beers.
This beer is black in color with a small orange/tan head. There's a little bit of lace.

Aroma of sweet chocolate and roasted malt/coffee.

The taste improves on the aroma. The chocolate is more bittersweet than sweet, and the coffee is much stronger than the aroma suggested. Strong dark coffee.

Very tasty. I don't think it's that heavy a beer, but it definitely a sipping beer. I will drink more of these.

Split with JLindros, poured into a Kate the Great Tulip. Reviewed from notes.

A - Poured a nice dark black pour with a one finger mocha head that left light side lacing with good retention. Spot on for appearance. Very well done.

S - Aromas of roasted malts and light roasted coffee beans. Thats kind of about it. Rather one dimensional.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with big roast malts and roasted coffee beans. Somewhat acrid and bitter. Not like a cup of coffee but more like just roasted beans.

M - Mouthfeel is really nice. Not quite smooth with some lighter carbonation.

O - Overall this isnt bad, but not stellar. Much better offerings from Maine Beer.

Bottle dated 09/23/12. Poured in to tulip.

A - Poured dark brown and settled black. One finger of thick espresso coloured head with good retention. Spotty lacing.

S - Huge roast aroma that is complimented by sweet milk chocolate, brown sugar and a hint of molasses in the background.

T - Heavy roast flavour and a fairly big semi-sweet chocolate presence are dominant. Lighter notes of smoke, brown sugar and molasses round out the flavour profile. A moderate bitterness is present throughout that helps to balance out the sweetness.

M - Medium body, almost full at times, with a huge chew. Silky. Light carbonation.

My first gorilla beer. I've had lots of monkey beers but this is my first gorilla beer.

Thick and clumpy espresso foam colored head over a dark brown to black beer. Clinging tresses of lace look good even after my glass is emptied. Bottle dated 9/23/12.

Smells like the usual suspects: dark roast coffee grounds, dark chocolate and some graham cracker which may not be ususal but is sure is nice.

Good and roasty without my sweetness. Dark roast coffee primarily, sorta monotone. I really dislike the mouthfeel which is thick, chunky and kinda vacant like a dry Irish stout.

Love MBCo.'s hoppy beers, still don't like their dark beers.

Bottled Sept 23

Nice creamy darker mocha colored creamy 1/2 finger head, fades slowly with nice layered lacing, pitch black thick almost sludge thickness.

Nose nice roasted malt quality, light fresh roasted coffee beans, grainy dusty coffee grounds and roast, light black patent, touch acrid metallic, nothing else.

Taste full of coffee, mostly roasted coffee bean but a bit of fresh brewed coffee add well, with some roasted malt. Quite bitter mostly from the roasted malt, some black patent malt and light acrid metallic like. There is a light nutty flavor, and hint of chewy earthy hops. Not much more. Finish is fairly bitter, more roast and coffee beans lingering, just a bit of earthy hops.

Mouth is fairly creamy and med to full bodied, good carb.

Overall ok flavors but fairly one dimensional, nice coffee and roast but pretty much nothing else, plus a bit to bitter and acrid.

Into a pint glass:

A: very dark, brown/black colored body with a beautiful foamy lumpy mocha colored head that lasted for a good minute. Some lightly speckled lacing appeared around the sides of the pint glass. No carbonation was seen rising due to the dark body. Only one ring at the top of the pint glass

S: coffee up front with some light tobacco and chocolate in the background

T: basically the same, nothing really different.

M: medium and a very nice smoothness and creaminess on the tongue.

O: big wow here, I'm very impressed, but usually am from this company. They know what they're doing when it comes to practically any beer style, never had anything bad from them. Keep crank'em out, MBC! This one was well done!

Bottled dated 9/23/12, poured into a snifter. Review #100.

A: Very dark, browish black. Finger of brown creamy head. Big wall of lacing left, good retention. Looks nice and inviting.

S: Big coffee, roasted malt base mixed with a good dose of pine and light citrus hops. Some cigar tobacco, bread crust, and light cocoa.

T: Black coffee/bittersweet cocoa blend, very noticeable burnt smokiness as well. I'm also getting an earthy, woody aftertaste that lingers more with each sip. Slight alcohol on the finish.

M: Medium heft, medium carbonated, but its also very creamy and soft on the mouth.

O: Excellent offering from MBC, and everything I've had from them has been awesome so this is no surprise. Definitely recommended along with everything else they make. Great work.

Bottle is dated 092312, around 3 weeks old. There is also an 01 after it, I assume Batch 1.

A: Pours a very dark brown (almost pure black) with a really nice, dense and huge chocolate milk colored head. Fades extremely slowly, leaving an almost solid wall of lacing behind at times. Large island of foam resides almost permanently.

S: Heavy on the roasted malt. Lots of chocolate up front, followed closely with lots of char and smoke. Oddly enough no real hops in the nose.

T: Lots of smoke and meat, like charred BBQ. Heavy char. A little chocolate in the middle. A bit of pine along with more smoke in the finish. Long smoky lingering aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied, fairly creamy and smooth.

O: A pretty standard porter, heavy-ish on the smoke and char for sure. Chocolate is a distant touch and no noticeable coffee aspect either. I expected this one to be really hoppy coming from MBC but it's surprisingly not. I would almost categorize this as an english porter with the level of smoke involved here.

Bottled 9/23/12

A: Deep black in the glass but dark brown/ruby red when held up to light. Huge, fluffy, frothy, medium-brown head. Soft and inviting. Decent lace and a bit of retention.

S: Hop presence is strong, making this smell more like a Black Ale or Black IPA, rather than an American Porter. But plenty of freshly roasted malt and coffee to balance it out. Hops are fantastic. Give the glass a swirl and you get fresh fruit, resin, and cedar.

T: It's Maine Beer Co., so...outstanding, of course. For the style? One of the best. The flavors are fresh, robust, and delicious. Roasted malt it there throughout but slightly fruity hops come through in the middle while chocolate and coffee round out the finish with hints of wood. A joy to drink.

M: No metallic, cloying, or lactose flavors like I find in a lot of Porters. Great flavor from start to finish and from first sip to last. Roasted malt, roasted coffee, and very dark chocolate cling to your palate. Body and carbonation are perfect. Goes down way too easily.

O: What can I say? While MBC sure knows how to make the lighter side of ales, they also know how to make the dark ones. Mean Old Tom is damn good, too. This beer is phenomenal. If you see this, you must try it out.

16.9oz bottle poured into my Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Dark brown with a 1/2” head that quickly recedes to thin ring. Decent lacing.

Smell: Provides a nice change from the expected as you immediately notice some piney hops over a coffee heavy roasted malt aroma.

Taste: The hops manage to remain bringing some piney bitterness as the roasted malt really manifest itself as coffee dominant, there is very little chocolate. A nice overall balance albeit a little heavy on the bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Very well carbonated, clean on the finish.

Overall: A nice change from the everyday porter as the hoppy flavor brings an interesting variant. One to seek out for those who love hop forward porters.

Pours jet black with a big thick rocky tan head. A topping off of the pint gives me enough of a head, even with a slow pour, and results in some thick foam rings clinging to the glass. This deserves a higher rating. This is pretty beer.

Deep roasted malt aroma. Some french roast coffee, and a hint of sweetness (perfume? Vanilla? Not sure -- faint).

Deep rich beer. Lots of bitter charred and dark roasted flavors. Some herbal hoppy notes, which don't seem as so severe as the beer opens up in the glass (I think this stays the same, it is just the other characteristics that develop). The alcohol is there, in both flavor and punch. Palate clears to charred bitterness. There is a slight acidic/very slight sour note in here too. Not sure if I could pick this out as porter in a blind test.

Medium to medium-full bodied. A little acid bite. Some tingly carbonation that keeps the flavors moving. This is thinner than stout, and has a little loose edge to it, but there is still some body.

This is a strong porter, in both intensity of flavor and alcohol. I think one at a sitting is plenty, and I'm positive that if this were available on tap for me, I'd have difficulty returning for a second. This is rich and flavorful but fairly intense. Like all of MBC's beers, this is a good one. However, it will be one that conflicts individual tastes and perceptions of what a style should be. Very worthy of trying, and very tasty. Go into this one with an open mind and you will be rewarded.

Pours jet black with solid, unmovable head. Great lacing in webs down all sides of the glass. Head dissipates quickly.
Deep aromas of chocolate, hints of coffee with cream, a hint of alcohol. An undertone of whole wheat bread and some faint leather straps.
Starts with good roasted malt character and less chocolate than the nose. Lots of alcohol in the middle. Not really any discernible hop flavors or aromas, but the beer is well balanced in that regard. A watery finish with more alcohol burn.
Mouthfeel is very nice. Smooth, full bodied, creamy, great.

A pretty good brew, but a lot of booze flavor. Would've liked to age it longer I guess. Dissipointing finish that is oddly watery however. The nose on this beer is outstanding.

Sith black with a frothy brown head. Lacing. The works. Yep, it's a porter alright! Seductive.

Smooth with cocoa notes and a touch of roasted malt as well. Soft, creamy texture is apparent in nose. Will it carry over to tongue?

Indeed it does. Good mix of cocoa/roasted malt upfront. Simple. Tasty. It baffles me as to why breweries feel the need to create hoppy black ales when the template has been around for decades thanks to our UK friends.

Lingering cocoa/roasted malt make up the mouthfeel. Carbonation is a put-off as it's too high to truly appreciate the "creaminess".

A porter lover may appreciate this and even though it is a solid offering, it's not one I would drink more than once due to the carbonation.

Poured into a pint glass. This one pours a dark cola brown with about an inch of creamy light tan head. Nice soapy lace.

Roasted malts on the aroma with hints of a mild roast coffee. Bitter notes round this out. The pallet has notes of rich coffee and some bittersweet cocoa in the finish. Seems to have a bit of a dark fruit character lingering.

The body is medium with soft carbonation. Overall this one is swell. Real enjoyable beer for them to add to their portfolio.

16.9oz bottle poured into a New Belgium globe. Bottling date is 9/23/12, it's very fresh at only 17 days from that time.

A: Pours black with a towering rocky brown head. Retention is awesome, the head doesn't budge an inch. Thick collars of lacing forcefully cling to the glass. It looks as though a power washer wouldn't be able to remove them.

S: French roast, hot chocolate mix, fudge, milk chocolate, malted milk balls. Slightly earthy and yeasty, a touch woody. Hint of char and smoke. Earthy hop scents, broken pine needles. Very slight hint of vague darkfruit. Highly aromatic.

T: Lots of char and smoke at the outset. Very acrid. Slight woodiness. Lots of roast. Black coffee. Black cocoa powder and bitter dark chocolate. Gentle touch of vanilla at the center of all this. Slight acidic twang with a hint of tart darkfruit. Hops are very earthy. Bakers chocolate, black cocoa powder, and smoke with a very slight earthy and oily hop presence in the finish.

M: Moderately thick body. Full, silky, and slightly chewy. Little to no carbonation. Slight astringency. It's a little flat, and could definitely benefit from a bit more carbonation.

O: This porter will put hair on your chest. It's rough around the edges, and not for the faint of palate. The dominant acrid malt tastes and lack of carbonation do hinder drinkability a bit, but not to the point that it makes the experience unenjoyable. A minor tweak here and there and I can really see this beer coming into its own.

Just picked this up a few days ago, the day it came out from what I hear. Opened and shared with BA Mielbeer Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a pair of snifters after it sat at room temp for about 20 minutes.

A: Motor oil black in color, and poured a 2 finger thick head. A very nice tan appearance on the head. The lacing is also a great sight. A light brown that covers the side of the glass.

Smell: It smells much more hoppy than expected, almost like a black IPA. Also scents of caramel, chocolate, and something else intense I can't quite pinpoint.

Taste: Hoppy, carbonated, and a nice chocolate taste that hits the back of the throat.

M: Carbonated and bubbly. Not much of a lingering aftertaste.

O: A very good porter, and I'll be interested to see how one holds up after about six months.
