American Pale Ale (APA) |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (147), on-tap (12), nitro-tap (1)

Notes:
Our first run at an American Pale Ale. Flavors and aromas of zesty citrus, passionfruit, and pine present themselves throughout. A very subtle malt sweetness for balance, but this is intended to finish dry.

Poured from a grey-amber 16.9 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip. Bottled on 111612 on side of label. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA) for $6.99.

A: Hazy peach-apricot with 1-2 fingers of white sticky head with good retention and plenty of hanging lace blobs.

S: The aroma is out-of-this-world for an APA with pineapple, mango, and grapefruit followed with good dose of pine and floral as well. The malt is mildly bready and crackery but takes a backseat to the hops. Very clean without much yeast character.

T: The flavor is excellent as well with luscious tropical fruit flavors cut with some pine and bit more grassiness than you catch in the nose. It closes with some floral hops notes as well. The malt bill is pretty straightforward and lends some crackery notes mainly. Again, yeast character is minimal to none. The bitter is low-moderate but right on the money,

M: The mouthfeel is very good as well with light body and medium-dry finish and a moderate carbonation that keep the beer lively without messing with the smoothness -- any more carb would be prickly.

O: A fine beer that I think is benefiting from the freshness -- under 3 weeks since bottling. Delicious with a lot of hops aroma and flavor with relatively low bitterness and ample maltiness to support the pleasant hoppiness. There is a fair amount of dry hopping with Amarillo, Centennial, and Simcoe I would guess by the bright nose and flavor. Great job Maine Beer. I like this one even better than Peeper which was also quite good. This is probably one of my top 5 APAs -- drinks very much like an Extra Pale Ale because it is very light but with more layered hoppiness.

Recently acquired in a BIF from Cuzco. 500ml bottle served in a Hill Farmstead win glass. Bottled 4/16/13.

A: Pours a semi hazy golden yellow color with some orange highlights. A thick and bubbly head forms on the pour. The retention is off the charts (similar to my bottle lunch). It creates a crater filled pillow of head and thick, sticky lace. Just a beautiful looking beer.

S: Sweet cracker malts mixed with some stone fruit and sweet grass. Lightly floral as well.

T: Lightly lemony with some grassy undertones. Some stone fruit with some white bread malts. Nicely sweetened on the finished with a very mild bitterness that just lingers around.

M: Bubbly and light. The drinkability is off the charts. Lightly bodied with a medium-high carbonation level. Slightly swet finish.

O: A wonderfully light and flavorful pale ale that has exceptional drinkability. I wish I had access to this as I would work it into my summer rotation of Daisy Cutter and Zombie Dust.
