Growler poured at the brewery on Tuesday, opened and consumed on Friday.

Pretty good growler pour: dark brown with a decent white head. Smells very mellow and sweet--not really zippy nor alcoholic, which are the two nodes I look for most in a Doppel. Still, a nice malt profile, even if it ain't too aggressive.

Tastes great. Sweet caramel runs parallel to zippy bock malt and they both dovetail into a sweet, spicy finish of european hops and lightly alcoholic yeast. Nodes of brown sugar and biscuit dough are found throughout. Most importantly, it avoids the common d-bock pitfalls of being too burny, too thick, or cloyingly sweet. This is a big, strong, interesting beer that has absolutely no off nodes. It's maybe just a tiny bit tame for the style, but it's still pretty big.

Half pint at Black Swan Brew Pub, Plainfield, IN. Poured a very nice semi-deep brown, with some decent initial head and some nice lacing. Very nice scent, with good sweet malts, and a bit of nice noble spicy hops. Nice flavor with a deep maltiness and nice semi-spicy hop finish, and hints of licorice. Goes down fine, although there was quite a bit of alcohol heat from it. Not my favorite doppel, but it's still an excellent brew from Sun King.

I had this on tap at the Black Sparrow in Lafayette. It arrived appearing cloudy and like ruby tinted maple syrup with an off white head which laced the glass. The aromas were of very strong caramel, brown sugar, and toffee. The flavors presented were of very strong brown sugar, caramel malts, and maple syrup. A slight amount of alcohol follows into the after taste. This beer is just way too sweet and is definitely one of the sweetest doppelbock's I've ever witnessed. It drinks medium in body. I expected more from this beer. Instead it was more of a candied malt bomb. I would be interested in seein how different the barrel aged version is.

According to their website it's 28 IBU'S and won a Bronze at the 2010 World Beer Cup and GABF.

Pours a dark ruby with two fingers of tan, fluffy head that stays for a few minutes before leaving beautiful, clingy lacing.  I smell some caramel malts, a little roasted malts and some brown sugar.  Tastes sweet, some brown sugar, malty, some yeast and a slightly drying booze finish, fantastic.  Mouthfeel is a little sticky and drinkability is high.  Another great beer by Sun King.
