A-Clear yellow orange, not much carbonation and one finger head.

S-Citrus hops, some tropical notes, along with malt, nice balance.

T-Starts with malt/caramel/bread ends with mild citrus notes and bitterness.

M-Medium bodied, nice carbonation crisp.

O-A solid APA, however it is hard to tell when it was canned. A fresh one is always worth a try.

Can. Pours a slightly hazy dark golden color with a moderate pillowy white head. Nose is actually quite hoppy - there are some nice floral elements to it that really come through. Taste isn’t too bitter, but has a nice hoppy floral taste to it. Very easy drink.

On tap at the 2013 Firestone Walker Invitational held at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy orange-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that smells better than it tastes.

16 Ounce silver/white can poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Medium transparency with a dark yellow and a good amount of white head.

Smell: Slightly sweet fruity scent with a little bit of a citrus hop smell.

Taste: More bitterness then the smell might indicate but it is not overpowering. It has a nice combination of sweetness and hoppy bitterness.

16oz can, can't read the date or writing on the bottle of can
Riedel tulip

A: Pours a fairly clear orange color. Tons of carbonation. Three fingers fluffy white head. Sticks around a while. Sticky lacing.

S: Grassy grainy malts. Light citrus like hops. It's a pale ale. Nothing really special about the nose.

T: Light hop bitterness in the tip of the tongue. Bright citrus flavors from the hops. Mid palate is grassy grainy malts to mesh with the lighter hops. Pretty clean. Dry crisp refreshing finish.

M: Light medium bodied.

This was not what I was expecting. I thought it would be some magical citrus experience. I honestly felt that the beer was watery. It could have been an old can.

A: golden hazy
S: citra hops
T: balanced malt and hops
M: this is my biggest problem with this; it just seemed watery.

This beer has received many good reviews, I will have to try again sometime.

16 oz. can purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, unknown birth date (there's some scribble on the bottom that I cannot decipher) poured into a DFH modified chalice, drank 4/3/13 over one hour.

A: 4.5 - nice golden coloration, good clarity with no hop haze (can mentions that it's dry hopped), white two finger head lingers into a half finger for the remainder of the session, small bubbles pouring off the bottom of the glass throughout, mild alcohol legs

S: 3 - after reading the can and appreciating that they are from IN (home of the 3Fs Hop Lorts), I was expecting a hop forward offering...I picked up little hop aroma at all; if anything, the aroma is biscuity/bready; I waited and waited...let it warm...there's nothing hoptacular happening in the aroma to these nostrils

T: 3.25 - overall meh; little bitterness and flavor overall...bready backbone predominates, definitely sessionable but is this what they were going for

M: 3 - again, an average pale ale mouthfeel; the good carbonation salvages it

O: 3.5 - why 90+ ratings? I was expecting it's cross-state cousin Zombie Dust and got slapped by bland...here's to hopping that I just got an old can (doubtful though...)

Appearance: Deep gold in color. Really nice, long lasting head. Good looking beer. Appears to have really nice carbonation.

Aroma: Nice hoppy aroma. Big citrus, tangerine notes. Underlying sweet pale malts with a bit of toasty grain presence. Nice hop/malt balance.

Taste: Very nice and balanced. Citrus is the star of the show again, which works for me. Light bodied with a lifting carbonation. Hops linger on the palate. Long, dry finish. Malt balances but never takes over. Hop forward.

Mouthfeel: Spot on. Well carbonated which lifts the hops off the palate. Very light bodied, true to pale ale style.

Overall: More pale ales need to follow suit. Nicely balanced, but with the hops at the forefront. Can format is nice. Could down several of these easily in one sitting. Nicely done.

A very pretty golden bronze orange amber, practically textbook, with a very crystal clear appearance. Carbonation is very easy to see, some fast, some slow, head is about only a finger and a half tall but made with very tiny bubbles and has a real nice creamy retention. It's a real impressive looking brew.

Real nice mix of fleshy orange citrus sensing hop smells. Light sweet malts seem to come in a bit, but there's a light toasty little grain as well. The citrus angle is quite dominant and very flavorful. Real solid smelling brew.

Hop forward with a very light malt body, and almost crisp feeling character. Good woody pine sense of hop with the citrus angle slowly dissapearing. Very light bodied but true to pale ale style, with a bit of stinging large hop presence. Bready toast flavors come out more often as the brew warms up which is a nice compliment.

Overall a real solid hop forward pale ale.

Straight out the can at Canfest. Light orange/auburn color, nice color. Pretty mild hop aroma coming out of it. Some sweet lightly buttered malt aroma.

Taste, pretty ho hum. Hopping not anything to write home about. Malt sweetness is fairly middle of the road. A little metallic with its bitterness. Some caramel and toffee, makes me think of that caramel corn stuff you get in cracker jacks. Still underwhelmed by the hops, whether it be the aroma, taste or mouthfeel, they just come off as a Midwestern Germanic stab at a pale ale instead of it being an American or West Coast hoppy pale, which the latter is generally preferred these days and with this taster.

It did not go easy on the bitterness, but it just obscured a lot I'm guessing. I think they sent some old cans to Canfest, like many of the breweries did.

On-tap poured into a pint glass.

An awesome one finger or so bright white headshot clings to the glass as you drink.

It's a little tame on the nose but it's got a nice hint of floral hops.

The initial taste is hop forward but immediately is balanced perfectly with a refreshing sweetness that gets exponentially more drinkable as the pint diminishes. Son of a bitch, what a damn good drinkable beer. Nice job, SK!

My first trip to Indy was a few years ago during the Big 10 basketball tournament and one of the most memorable parts of that trip was a visit to the brand new Sun King brewery (www.sunkingbrewing.com). What made this place stick out to me was that they were just starting out and happened to be having a tasting event that day. For $10 we got 10 tickets, which means 10 drinks, as well as the opportunity to sit and visit or look around the brewery. As people were leaving they would give us their tickets which meant more beers for us. Needless to say, we got a little bit of buzz going but I remember the beers being very good.

Sun King doesn’t distribute outside of Indiana, yet, but my brother-in-law would bootleg Sun King products back to Iowa when they would return home to visit. Osiris isn’t a pale ale that is lighter in flavor, this pale ale bites back a bit with a nice resinous hop presence followed by some sweetness to balance it out.

Appearance: Deep orange, amber color with a short lasting, white head. Clarified and very appealing.

Smell: Strong west coast, hop-forward presence. Smells primarily of grapefruit but some other citrus flavors are present as well as pine.

Taste: Definitely a hopped-up American pale ale that some may argue borders in the IPA range as far as hoppiness goes. A malt backbone is noticeable but not dominating. It consists of bready/toasty flavors yet the citrus hops are the star of the show in this beer. As the beer warms up, caramel notes become noticeable.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with an appropriate carbonation level. Very easy-drinking.

Overall: This is my go-to pale ale. Nothing significantly mind-blowing about it, just a solid beer that I can drink all day. The hop flavor is enough to satisfy any hophead yet there is s till a solid malt backbone to keep it balanced, even at 50 IBUs.

(Served in a nonic)
A- This beer pours a crystal clear slightly dense yellow with a gentle carbonation of microbubbles densely packed in there and a egg shell white head of foam that breaks up.

S- The pale malt note gives way to a gentle herbal dry hop finish.

T- The green herbal hops have a slight mint quality to them that turns a bit pungent in the finish and lingers for a moment.

M- The medium mouthfeel has no alcohol heat and a gentle fizz and creamy texture.

O- This is a sessionable nice hop forward beer with good malt flavors and a nice mint hop quality in the finish. It has a nice creamy texture but the bitterness starts to grow a bit to strong in the after taste.

Another gift from my friend Chris, which he picked up in Indianapolis while driving back to college. Poured from a 16 oz. can into a pint glass.

A - Pours a butterscotch orange, with a slight haze. Minimal carbonation with a fluffy two finger head.

S - Very mild aroma, was expecting more here. Some orange, citrus and pine, with a hint of maltiness as well.

T - Starts with some nice citrus and hops and finishes dry with some bread-like characteristics. Maybe some caramel in there as well.

M - A medium - full feel for me, more heft than anticipated.

O - Extremely drinkable, if a little tame. Overall solid for a flagship, but its no Alpha King. Thanks again, Chris!

Got a can as an extra in a BBB sour beer swap - thanks Luke! Poured to a tulip.

Pours a deep amber with good clarity, decent bone-white head with mediocre retention. Aroma is hop forward with intense tangerine, orange, and low notes of lemon and pine. Low bready malt aroma. Flavor follows the aroma - medium-high hop bitterness and strong flavors of citrus and tropical fruit courtesy of the hops. Low piney hops in the background. Low bread malt flavor with sweet caramel undertones. Medium-high, mouth-filling carbonation is quite refreshing. Low alcohol warmth, a bit high for this style. Dry, slightly astringent finish from the hops. A somewhat aggressive and very interesting take on the APA style. Nice beer!

Can from CWBlues, thanks a bunch Cy! 16oz can into a tulip.

Filtered orange, with a nice dense cap of white head. Good lace and a whole load of retention. Nose has some floral and citrus notes, with some lightly grassy and pine hop notes over a bit of pale malt.Taste has more of the grassy/herbal/citrus hop mix going on, some toasty bready pale malt and a bit of malt sweetness. Bitterness is mild. Lighter medium body and on the slightly higher-than-medium side in terms of carbonation. Quite drinkable with some good flavour. A solid flagship pale.

Thanks zach for this beer...
The beer pours a clear amber with a generous white foamy head that laces poorly. The nose is disappointing, although it has a slightly floral hoppiness and nectar sweetness. The taste is just as mild as the nose presenting a bouquet of juicy hops and has a semi-sweet, light bodied mouthfeel with a hint of bitterness in the finish. It's one of the easiest drinking APAs I've had...no wonder it's not my favorite. Overall, this beer is quite balanced and refreshing to drink. However, it's probably a one and done for me.

The appearance is one of the best aspects of this brew. The head is bright white, but only a finger thick and quickly recedes to a thin even layer. There is heavy lacing left on the sides of the glass. The color is a clear orange amber. I can see several columns of bubbles rising to the top.

The smell is two-dimensional, which is what I would expect from a good pale ale. This brew strikes an excellent balance between hop and malt aromas. The hop aroma is definitely on the citrus end of the spectrum and reminds me of orange and lemon zest. The malt aroma is like caramel and lightly roasted malts.

The taste begins with orange and grapefruit like citrus. There are some toasted bread flavors in the middle which are overcome by bitterness. The bitterness does not linger strong, because the finish is has a nice balance between the malt backbone and hop bitterness. The aftertaste is great and remains balanced. It tempts you into drinking more.

The feel is light to medium and very little carbonation is detected. There is a very light presence of oil that coats the mouth. Although this might be the fatty lunch I just had.

This is one of my favorite pale ales out there. The balance in the nose and flavor is my idea of excellent execution. At the stated ABV I wouldn't call this a session brew, but it's very difficult to have only one. I'm glad to have relatives in Indy, so I can always have a chance to visit Sun King.

Deep yellow, clear body, and a tall dense white head.

Smells of orange peel and light lemon with grainy malt.

Aggressively hopped with good malt backbone. Citrus hops and grain, slightly bitter.

Really clean mouthfeel if not a little oily. Medium light body and very drinkable.

It's a really outstanding pale ale and canned in a tall boy at that.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 16 oz. can into pint glass.

A: Pours a deep yellow to light gold, with a two-finger white head that settles to foam. Decent visible carbonation.

S: Bright orange/citrus aroma, some flower & pine hops also.

T: Hoppy up front (following the nose), although a little muted compared to aroma. Then biscuity malt & sweetness.

M: Tends towards a lighter mouthfeel, nice amount of carbonation. Pithy hop hang. Minimal alcohol presence.

O: Definitely a really nice hoppy pale ale. A very well done beer!

16 oz. can courtesy of DSho. Pours a gorgeous golden amber with 1 finger of foamy white head that keeps a nice cap until the end along with a fair amount of sticky lacing.

Aroma is hops up front, citrus and floral.

Taste is a multitude of hops along with some sweet citrus notes, spice, malt and toasty bread with no alcohol presence.

Mouthfeel is crisp and light, somewhat dry, good carbonation with a smooth creamy finish.

Overall this is so drinkable, would be easy to knock back quite a few on any given day. Very well balanced, highly recommended. Cheers ~

Saturated sunset in the tropics orange, high clarity, speckled lace all around the glass, and a decent head when first poured.

Some orange peel and floral notes, seems like Cascade or maybe Centennial.

Lightly malty with a citrusy edge, moderately bitter with a smooth feel to it. Light to medium bodied with a easygoing level of carbonation, finishes dry with lingering herbal bitterness. Mellow and sessionable, solid go-to beer when in Indy.

Appearance: Clear burnished copper body topped by a finger of frothy foam. Looks like a pale ale.

Smell: A blast of ambiguous citrus as soon as I pop the can. Further inspection reveals a slight vegetal and grass note that's inoffensive. Once in the glass, the bready malt backbone comes out a bit more. It's not terribly aromatic or exciting, but it's appealing enough.

Palate: Decently hoppy with a moderate level of bitterness. Flavors of orange pith and grapefruit are dominant, and there's a slightly astringent herbal-vegetal note that trails behind. Slightly mineral/metallic mid-palate. Malt is barely noticeable, and the body feels a bit thin. The finish is largely bitter, though there's a dash of bready malt.

Overall: Nothing exceptional here, but certainly solid stuff. I'd gladly drink it again.
