12 oz into nonic
A: nice golden amber, lazy carbonation, moderate sized bubbles in the head which was light in its lacing
S: piney, sweet, graham cracker and a little bit of fruity
T: piney with a bit of an astringent quality, bitter hop flavor with a bark-like quality, fruity esters persist from the nose
M: disappointingly bland with no significant body and a speck of tannic dryness
O: it's on the lower end of average.

pours out a slightly cloudy/murky dark amber colour with a minimal off white head and just a touch of sticky lace. sugary toffeeness aroma of malt, some diacetyl butteriness with a candied hop aroma. the flavour profile eases up on the diacetyl a bit, which is welcome...the malt character is on the caramel and toffee side...a nice overall hop profile shows off some layered spruce and citrus notes with a nice back end lingering bitterness. it is a bit slick and sweet, but i was expecting something worse. for a pale ale, this has a pretty hefty body on it, accompanied by a chewy mouthfeel that is usually found on more substantial IPA's and DIPA's. not sure how i feel about that either. drinkability is ok...a regular pale ale should drink a bit easier than this.
overall...well, first off it's a bit of a sticky sweet mess, second...it seems to me that this blurs the line into IPA territory, and third...despite what i find unappealing about this...it has a pretty interesting hop profile and plentiful bitterness. it's rough around the edges and has too little attentuation. maybe homebrewish...?

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. Minimal fizzy head with very little retention and only trace amounts of lacing. Clear orangish/copper-colored body.
Aroma is roasted molasses and caramel. No date on the bottle, so it could be old, but only the slightest earthy hops presence. Very biscuity with a strong aroma of diacetyl. All kinds of sweet, and none of them pleasant in the least.
Well, at least it doesn't taste as bad as it smells. Light piney/earthy bitterness with a balance of toasted buttered toffee malts. Becomes slightly more balanced as it warms, but still unimpressive.
Mouthfeel is somewhat fizzy and definitely medium-bodied. Overall, I'm still unimpressed.

Hook & Ladder Flashpoint Pale
Orange colored brew with a small white collar and little to no lacing. Smells bready and lightly hoppy. In the flavor, very mild citrus hops with a watered down caramel malt backing. Mild in every sense of the word, but not too bad.

poured chilled in ale glass
A: moderate head, pale orange; inert; yikes!
S: salty peanuts, hops, pine; quite a yummy smell
T: very nice pale ale, rich and complex in the hops, which are rather mild and understated; I get overtones of garlic and spinach
I disagree with other reviewers so far, and I think this isn't that bad; one could wish a higher ABV, but I was impressed by its flavorfulness and smoothness

12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint. No date or info.
A - It's a great looking beer with a clear bronzed amber color and a fantastic head. Off-white bone in color and great retention with thick lace coating all of the glass. Almost picture-perfect.
S - Grainy amber malts with traces of caramel and a little toast provide a backbone for the citrusy hop nose. Hints of grapefruit, lemon, and floral notes are relatively low. A slightly buttery diactyl aroma makes an unwanted appearance.
T - The diactyl buttery flavor is definitely in here. It almost overwhelms the toasted amber malts and dry, floral, and lightly resiny hops. Besides the fact something is clearly wrong with this beer, it's not an awful pale ale.
M - A little sick on the tongue from the problem at hand, it's relatively smooth with a moderate-to-high carbonation finish and a lingering dry, very bitter resiny finish. Medium-light in body.
D - Unappealing flavor showing something is off with this wrecks it. A hard-to-down bitterness lingers after the slick buttery finish as well. It's not a bad start for this brew but some work needs to be done with it.
