I two servings from the tap at the actual home office. It was certainly a good surprise. I loved the dark almost black color of the beer. The guy that poured me my cup went to great lengths not to pour a head. He did, just a little and it had a nice brown color that was pleasing to my eyes. The beer had a distinct odor of coffee and a very pleasing stout taste. Mouthfeel was average - almost too strong carbonation but not overpowering either.

Overall, I was very pleased over the choice (I coulda had something they called a "Von Braun"), good look and good taste - it's the reason I had two.

Found this at the Stillwater Grille in Fort Myers, Florida, this stout is black as night with a light tan ring of bubblage on top and fair lacing. The aroma delivers definite charcoal malt with some nutty herbal hop. Solid for sure. The first mouthful brings a somewhat watery charcoal but the flavor gets fairly intense though not very complex. It’s medium bodied but the feel is more aqueous than I would like in this style with a dry surface finish. Carbonation is very minimal but okay. A fair stout, perhaps a bit forgettable.

Poured on-tap at the Cocoa Beach Brewery, the beer was served up in a pint glass. Pours a nice jet black with a thick ring of chocolate colored head. The beer has a thick, viscous appearance to it. Once it hits your mouth, you can't help but notice how surprisingly ligh and crisp it actually is, with a great smoothness to it. The brew also leaves a great lacing along the glass while you imbibe. The nose is heavy in coffee aromas, with a strong dose of smoke. Very inticing. The flavors are a very balanced blend of rich malt, dark chocolate, and coffee. The sweetness and bitterness play very well with each other. There is a hoppy and coffee bitter aftertaste, with a smooth, yet somehow dry, finish. Great beer!

Dark black with creamy tan head that leaves great retention and foamy lace. The smell is roasty with burnt sugar edges, dark chocolate, coffee, and smoke. The taste is ashy. Too much black patent. Perhaps others enjoy this, but there is a charcoal, burnt taste that is a bit much for me. Smoky, bitter chocolate, and roasted coffee. Quite roasty and ashy tasting. Strong with alcohol peeking through. Overall an average stout.

On draft at the brewery.

The beer is black with an inch of thick, beige head resembling wet sand. The aroma is of chocolate, coffee, roasted malt. The flavor is very pleasant with more chocolate and cocoa nicely balanced with roasted malt. The body is thin, but not watery, making this a very drinkable brew. Surprisingly delicious. Recommended.

Enjoyed at the brewpub on Sept. 8, 2010 after hitting the beach.

Appearance: A very black/brown body with zero head because of the way he poured it. Not cool IMO.

Smell: Cocoa with a charcoal & bitter aspect to it.

Taste: Oatmeal with less charcoal than in the aroma. Some hops in the background which was nice and a brief appearance of cocoa. The taste is good but it doesn't linger.

Mouthfeel: A bit thin actually and not as full bodied as a stout should be though it is still pleasant enough.

Drinkability: I might have this again but it's not one of my favorites.

Overall: A decent effort that didn't make a lasting impression on me. I would have preferred a more fuller body and for the taste to last just a bit longer. Still, i think it's worthy of checking out.

The Lost Spring Break 2012 Beer Reviews, Chapter 5

Black body, with small dark tan head. Small head may be the result of hotel glassware.

Big nose of deep roast coffee, undercurrent of chocolate, and a layer of oatmeal.

Taste reverses impact. Coffee is there, but chocolate is stronger. Good taste of oats along the way.

Smooth, rich, but not slick mouthfeel.

Overall, it lived up to its name.

After drinking the IPA, I wasn't too excited about this one. Fortunately, this was a little bit better.

It was black in color with a small tan head. There were a few specks of lace.

Roasted malt aroma, not too strong. Some coffee and chocolate.

Strong coffee taste, some chocolate.

Mildly bitter.

[Suggested Glassware: Nonic Pint]

The pour was a murky dark black with a small (less than 1 finger) foamy light brown head that diminished in a minute or so and had fair streaky lacing.

The aroma was very mild of a roasted cereal malt and a doughy leathery yeast with notes of chocolate, coffee and flaked oats.

The taste was lightly sweet and mildly malty with a hint of chocolate and a nice creamy oat taste from the start, with the finish being lightly bitter and mildly roasty with a bit of coffee at the end. The flavor lasted only a short time following the swallow, with a mild smooth coffee flavor that was left behind to linger for just a short while longer.

Mouthfeel was a just bit above medium in body with a smooth watery texture and a soft carbonation.

Overall this was a light thin Stout with a decent roasty taste and a good drinkability...

Pours black with a beige head. Good retention. Little lacing.

Coffee and aluminum aroma. Very strange.

Lots of coffee up front. That metal aftertaste hits like I've been licking a spoon. Very astringent finish and not much complexity.

Fairly light mouthfeel with carbonation levels that are too high for the style.

This one is a mess and all over the place. Flavors aren't very complex to begin with and there are flaws in the aftertaste and mouthfeel. One of the few bottles no one wanted to finish at the end of the night.

A: Pours black with ruby highlights and a huge large-bubble tan head. Very little lacing.

S: Coffee, dark chocolate and toffee with hops wafting in and out.

T: The taste is very refreshing. Coffee and bitter cocoa dominate from front to back, while the aftertaste is herbal toffee. I would easily rate the taste a 4 if there were a tad bit more complexity.

M: The carbonation is over the top and the large bubbles give it a rather prickly feel that doesn't lend itself well to the bitterness of the American hopping.

O: Overall this wasn't a bad oatmeal stout and was quite welcomed on Saint Patrick's Day.

Well the name says it all. Its definity different. The pros: huge hop profile. Very bitter and the makes the strong coffee flavor dominate the taste profile. Very roasty and great flavor. Also very sessonable. Looks like and tastes like a big beer, but drinks easy. Cons: no head, little head retention. Body is on the thin side. Otherwise I love this beer.

Got as an extra in a trade. Pours black with a Dark brown hue when held in the light, with a deep tan head. Smells chocolaty with hints of espresso as it warms. Flavor is fairly hoppy, nice roast and chocolate malt, dry finish with possibly some smoky elements. Above Average, but I like an Oatmeal stout to be an Oatmeal Stout.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

The beer itself pours a dark chocolate brown color with a soft ruby tint in the corner of my pint glass. A small foamy tan head forms on the pour, fading to a small film and a ring that clings to the edges of the glass.

The aroma is pleasant, simple, and smooth. Milk and dark chocolate, flaked oats, and a little bit of coffee. The flavor generally follows the aroma, with a smooth and gentle flavor. Up front the flavor has a milk chocolatey sweetness and a dark chocolate bitterness that evolves over the sip. This bitterness blends with the oats to form the malt presence, develops a bit of coffee flavor, and finally turns to a soft, general earthy bitterness at the end. The finish is slightly bitter and has a bit of chocolate left.

This drinks a little bit bigger and thicker than the modest 4.7% ABV would indiciate. The carbonation has a smooth creaminess that is partially interrupted by more vigorous bubbles.

This unfortunately named, since I found it to be more of an average Oatmeal Stout than something truly out of the ordinary.

Pours an opaque black with tons of dark brown head and large bubbles. The nose is extremely roasty with a pungent acetone note and some malt sweetness in the back. The flavor is similar, roasted and burnt with magic marker and some malt sweetness in back. The feel is light, thin in back and overly oily and slick and overly carbonated.

Poured out of a bomber into my Duvel tulip.

A – Deep, dark brown with one finger of tan foamy head. Recedes fairly quickly to a nice cover. Spotty lacing.

S – Chocolate, mocha and oats. Nice subtle sweet smell. Coffee.

T – Like the nose I first get a nice mocha taste. Light with hints of dark chocolate. Almost smoky flavor follows. Roasty. A coffee like bitterness rolls through at the end. It leaves a slightly odd burnt taste in the mouth.

M – Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate.

O – This is a decent stout. I would love to try this on tap as I have a feeling it would be much better. Flavors are solid but lack just a bit. Only drawback I had was the slight burnt taste at the end. All together though I would certainly have this again.

Bomber poured into an efes tulip. Low head and retention. Minimal lacing. Almost opaque in color. Aroma includes coffee, light chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is mildly creamy, coffee and roast malt dominate. Touch of sweetness. No alcohol noted, no off putting flavors, pleasing mouthfeel and an overall solid stout.

I picked this one up at a Whole Foods in Orlando near Universal Studios.

A: Poured very anemically and without much head. The retention was mild and almost insignificant.

S: I got a mild bit of oat and coffee, but that was it. Was that really coffee, or just dark malt wizardry?

T: Same as the nose, but a bit worse... And quite thin. However, I've had much worse. Didn't get much of the slippery oat quality on the taste.

M: Like I stated before, this was pretty thin and very under-carbonated. No lacing really.

O: Not much love for this one on here, but I found it slightly worth of my sobriety and somewhat gulp able... yet ultimately forgettable.

Pours a deep mahogany brown, not quite black but damn close. Even with an extremely hard pour there was only a handful of bubbles that formed. What little bubbles did exist stuck decently to the glass but hardly what I would call lacing.

Smell is odd, to say the least. Lots of dark fruits, almost sour but not quite. Very light acrid roast aroma mixed in with the fruits. The combination is not pleasant but not all together bad either.

Taste is better with less of the dark fruits and a little bit more chocolate. The roast isn't as bitter as the smell would make you think. It's actually not that bad by itself but that aroma sticks around and in this particular glass it is focused to my nose which just makes it worse and somewhat difficult to enjoy the good flavors.

Thinner body with light, but very much present, carbonation. I would like this to be a tad bit thicker as an oatmeal stout but it's not bad at all.

Overall, I might try this again down the road, it's a bit different but not really bad. As it is though, if I want an oatmeal stout I will probably go elsewhere.

A- 22oz bottle purchased at Total Wine in Orlando. Pours a dark black color with a light tan head.

S- The aroma is roasted malt and sweet cocoa.

T- The taste like the aroma is dark roasted malts, milk chocolate and a touch of coffee as well. The taste is a little on the thin side.

M- The mouthfeel is between light and medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

O- Overall, this is a pretty average porter that I probably wouldn't purchase again.

Poured from bomber picked up last month on the space coast. A see-through very dark brown with one finger of tan colored head, settles to a thin layer leaving a few wisps of lace on the glass. Smell: like dumping a bunch of chocolate chips in oatmeal, a little toasted grain, quite fruity, light earthiness. Taste: starts off with dark chocolate, a light astringent roastiness, then everything vanishes mid sip to a lasting earthy, green bitterness. Tasted good, but too fleeting. Light-medium bodied, carbonation is lowish but works ok. Finish is too thin, too bitter for the style. Beef up the grav, cut some of the hops and we'll meet again.

Received from RomaniIteDomum in the Stanley Cup BIF. 22oz bomber served in a pint glass

A: Dark, dark brown with a small amount tan head. The beer is somewhat lifeless. First pour had no lace but I got a little the second glass

S: Very small nose. There are some coffee grounds, bitter chocolate and brown sugar

T: Lots of coffee bitterness, but not really much of the flavor. Bordering on astrigent. After it warms up, the other flavors come out. These include bakers chocolate and oat flakes. Minor presence of vanilla and nutmeg

M: Medium bodied, barely. Overall thin for the style. Carbonation is a bit too high. Would like to see this smoothed out (or on nitro)

D: Decent drinking oatmeal stout. Has some minor flaws that could probably be cleaned up easily. I'd check this place out if I were in the area

"Not Just Some" Oatmeal Stout pours an opaque black with a thin brown head from a twenty two ounce bottle. The aroma is roasty. The flavors are nice, roasted malt, chocolate and coffee like flavors meld well. There is a bit of sweetness to the flavor. Overall quite enjoyable.

Brought back from Fla. by a buddy's father. Shared among 4 friends.
Aroma had a pleasant roasty character initially. It moved to a duller and less specific aroma and at the end seemed to hold a stale oxidized quality.
Poured with excessive head that was tamed with time. Very black.
Strong roast flavor that held burnt and then acrid quality. Finish also held ash flavors. Not pleasant. Flavor, feel nor body seemed to contain any oat quality.
Excessive carbonation covered a very thin body.
Ultimately not an enjoyable experience. Three of four were barely able to finish the 4 to 5 oz pour. One noted it as acceptable.
