A: Reddish brown / mahogany color. Something special here ! Almost no head, with very low retention. Leaves a very thin lacing.

S: sour, woody wine. Smell of soaked dark fruits. Sweet malt also.

T: strong acidity but no tartness. Cherries, dark grapes, prunes. Woody notes along with caramel malts and hints of chocolate as an aftertaste.

M: Good carbonation, sweet but not too syrupy. The ABV is well hidden but it strongly warms all the same. Dry aftertaste.

O: A damn good beer ! Rarely seen such a well balanced, complex oud bruin. Would certainly gain even more in complexity by being aged in the bottle.

This Beer is one of the few, the proud, the intangible. As a brewer I've had many renditions of sour from the most vinegar to the most horse-haired and this one is a delicate balance of wild strains. It doesn't taste the 13 percent advertised and has a complex nose. The flavor isn't overly sour but it has a pleasant tartness that can break through the other wild flavors and the dry finish doesn't linger on the tongue. It's brownish and a bit cloudy and has a solid carbonation profile.

Poured out of an 11.2 oz bottle into one of my tulip glasses, this beer pours a hazy, cloudy deep red color with an amber/copper hue. The slightly off-white head is about 2/3 inch thick when poured before setting to a nice very thick ring lining the inside of my glass. One of the best and most concise rings I've seen in awhile, along with some mild lacing on the glass when sips are taken. Dry and earthy aromas of red wine tannins along with a nice oaked smell and some cherries and perhaps even a slight hint of cranberry, along with a very slight hint of roasted caramel malt. As the beer sits and warms, some of the harshness that is initially present with the flavors levels out. Flavors of oaked roasted caramel malt give way to red wine-esque tannins, cherry, a very slight hint of cranberry, raisin, and plum tartness that is all rounded out with a biscuit like quality on the finish. Has a very dry, crisp yet smooth, somewhat oily, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. The one really coasts the palate and lingers for quite awhile. Quite easy to drink in the way good beer should be, especially since the 13% ABV is well masked. Really glad this 13% ABV beer somehow managed to sneak its way onto the shelves here in Ohio.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip.

(A)- Pours a clear ruby red cherry color. Produced a giant frothy head of off-white colored foam that stuck around for quite some time. Left all kinds of clumpy lacing behind.

(S)- Quite dry and earthy up front. Shows lots and lots of oaky wood with a subtle acidity in the background.

(T)- A nice sharp acidic yet dry profile overall. Plenty of spicy oak in there amidst some vinegar-like reddish fruits. Mildly earthy with bits of biscuit on the finish which is quite nice.

(M)- A nice carbonation level. I really like the balance of this where it is a happy harmony of acidic fruit, very dry spicy oak, and a lightly earthy with biscuit yeast finish. The 13%ABV is completely non-existent which is absolutely inconceivable, yet amazing to see how well that is integrated into this beer.

(O)- What an excellent Flanders! I am still amazed how well the 13% is hidden in the sea of wonderful acidic fruit and heavy bits of oak this has. Not positive how this would improve with age, but what I have in my glass currently is really quite stunning for the style.

330ml into a Cantillon tulip.

A: Pours a pleasant ruby-brown with a nice khaki head. Leaves plenty of lacing.

S: Soft red wine tannins giving off notes of oak and overripe berries, balanced acetic tartness, light brett mustiness, caramel and cherry.

T: Rich dark cherry and plum tartness, vinous oak, a hint of vanilla, light caramel and bready maltiness, a bit buttery. The alcohol is almost entirely hidden.

M: Medium-bodied with fine and creamy carbonation. A little bit of alcohol warmth in the throat. Moreish tannins pull on the tongue.

O: An excellent, smooth oud bruin. The fact that this beer is 13% boggles the mind.

Served in a Sweetwater mini-snifter.

And this is how you close an evening, folks. This stuff pours a lightly-brackish sunset amber topped by a half-finger of light tan foam. The nose comprises bubblegum, light biscuit, light maple syrup, toffee, and light red wine. The taste brings in more of the same, with an overriding sense of tartness and such. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a decidedly dry, sticky finish. Overall, a surprisingly (not sure why, though) nice and enjoyable brew, one that is up-front with its sourness, but one that also doesn't bash you over the head with it.
