Enjoyed on-tap at Brick Store Pub:

The beer appeared slightly hazy golden color with a very light, but thick white head. There was a nice thin layer of the head throughout the entire drink.

The aroma was good, typical Belgian...sweet with some fruit. Not exceptional, but spot on for the style.

The taste on the other hand was very good. The first thing that I noticed was that it had a kick after every drink. I guess it might have been the alcohol kind of burning as it went down, but it kept me interested.

The beer had good carbonation to it and it was very easy to drink, although with the high ABV I would not drink too many at one time. Definitely a beer to drink slowly and enjoy. Very tasty and I hope to try again.

On tap at the Brick Store Pub. Pours a very hazy golden, virtually opaque, but without lots of yeasties floating around. Smells of tangy Belgian yeast with pronounced aromas of bananas, clove, and spice. The taste is wonderful. Flavors of apricot, candi sugar, clove, black pepper, juniper come together seamlessly. There is a nice finish of spice and bright, slightly spicy hops on the finish. The mouthfeel is long and attenuated. Very little sweetness on the finish. Absolutely delicious on-tap and one of the better tripels out there.

Beautiful tripel. Hazy bubbly orange with a foamy dense head. Nose is tart apples, sharp and biting, with sugary spices. Taste is heavy on the alcohol, it kicks in early and stays strong. Strong sweetness comes through, and yeast. Mouthfeel is quite good, it swims heavily through your mouth. Drinkability is hampered a bit from the ABV and lingering alcohol flavors. Still a great beer, but alcohol hurts it.

Drank on-tap at the Publick House, Brookline, MA

Poured a slightly hazed, golden amber with a tight, bright white, three-finger head that slowly faded to a thin film. Huge chunks of lacing stuck all down the glass.

The aroma was distinctly Belgian. A powdery yeastiness was immediately detectable along with orange peel, coriander, spices and candi sugar. As the beer warmed, the sweetness really came out.

The taste was similar to the nose. Fruity overtones came through strong up front, along with some candi sugar and flowery notes. Orange peel and spices were noticeable mid-palate. Strong alcohol appeared out of nowhere and really crescendoed into the finish. Some mild hops came through as well.

Mouthfeel was lighter bodied and fluffy with a fine, almost tingly carbonation.

Drinkability on this beer was a mixed bag. I really enjoyed the flavors and aromas but I found the alcohol to be a bit overwhelming.

Sample at Firewaters in Atlantic City. This beer pours a hazy yellow-orange color with a medium rocky white head that lasts the whole (small) glass. Large patches of lacing. The aroma consists of yeast, citrus and different spices. Medium body with sweet clove and malt flavors, along with touches of hops and alcohol. Nice fruity undertones as well. The finish is both fruity and spicy. All in all this is a solid Tripel.

Appearance: hazy pale yellow in color with a one finger head that lasts a while. Nice lacing paints the glass.

Smell: grass and yeast spiciness is easily detectable.

Taste: nice malt sweetness is balanced with a moderate bitterness level, lemon zest, green grapes, grass, and alcohol. Yeast spiciness lingers around awhile too.

Mouthfeel: crisp from start to finish. Somewhat dry at the finish too. Medium bodied beer. Aftertaste is long as the flavors stick to the tongue and don't seem to leave.

Drinkability: awesome tripel but the alcohol levels drop this score down a bit. Find this one and enjoy it. It's great on tap.

Certainly a Tripel, given the pilsner malt profile, alcohol strength, and yeasty spices, esters and phenols. But it borrows a lot of Wit-like spices and cotton candy softness, with a pronounced Leffe honey-malt sweetness. Can't get enough of this beer.

Pouring a majestic orange with golden strands along the edge, the beer's yeasty haze is significant, allowing only a faint glow to penetrate. A very thick and dense cottony head builds on top of the beer and camps out for the session. Looking like whipped toppings, the foam clings to the glass with patterns of intricate lace. Aside from the excessive haze, this is an idealic beer appearance.

Very perfumy with a collection of scents that range from sweeter scents of honey and sugar cookie dough to a yeasty brine of soft pilsner malt and light breads, followed by the spicy notes of corriander, floral hops, and orange zest. Very fragrant to say the least.

Flavors take off with the succulent cotton candy/powdered sugar and honey sweet taste, but soon settle into a more balanced flavor spread thanks to herbal hop bitterness, spicy white pepper and corriander, and an alcohol flavor of spice and bitteness. Esters of peach, oranges, pear, appricots, and apples blend well with the hop flavors of lemongrass, fresh cut herbs, and a lightly woody bitterness in finish. A delicious beer that rides very closely to the sweet side of the perscriptions for the style.

Champagne-like bubbles explode to create a full and expansive feel to the initial taste. The evaporation of carbonation curbs the creamy textures and ushers in a drier, warmer, and whimsical sweetness in memory. It seems that the impression of sweetness is left on the mouth but without the actual weight of sweetness.

A dry fruity aftertaste with lingering spice and alcoholic warmth all transition to the next drink in a very seamless manner.

I like my Belgian Tripels a little drier and with more zesty hop flavor and pronounced bitterness in balance. Where this one resides a bit more on the Belgian Strong Golden Ale side, it doesn't finish as rich as those either- making this a great choice for those of Tripels but with a nagging sweet tooth.

Sampled last weekend at the Map Room in Chicago. The beer poured a nice hazy golden color with 2 fingers of head that sits fluffy over the beer. The nose was somewhat apple sweet, but with a bit of sourness and a slight acidic tone as well. The flavor was so nice on this. The initial sour and tart flacors meld together with the fruity tones to make this one finish sometwhat like a sweet-tart candy. Nice. The feel was moderate, slightly creamy with a healthy bit of bubble. Solid beer. I could easily have drank this beer all night, but why when there were so many other choices...

Accused of being a crazy bastard with this one on 1/1/2005. 16-oz. pint pour at the Sunset.

1/8-inch creamy and tight head stuck for a good way throughout. Apple cider light brown hue with tons of chum’ looking closely it was possible to make out some action within. Clover honey, clotted cream, and some cinnamon on nose. Christmas pudding sweetness followed by a plum and raisin fruitiness and a flaky malt finish; also, a grape-like resin to the follow-up. A soothing offering overall.

This was a very tasty offering this week at Anam Cara. The pour was a cloudy goldenrod, topped with a frothy head that was reminiscent of whipped egg whites. The head died down a bit, but still stayed with me as I enjoyed this beer. I found the aroma spicey but muted, which I liked. Taste is also a bit spicey, with top citrus notes. I thought the beer had great full mouthfeel, with some slight bitterness in the finish. A well-made, very good example of the style. I new it was a big beer, and it hid that almost perfectly. Would get one again, but only one at a time.

Clear and golden brew with a nice fine-bubbled white head. Sweet, spicy smell - floral, a bit yeasty, and somewhat resembling bubblegum. Oily, bitter hop taste, with notes of yeast and malt with some floral and fruity notes. Fruit flavor becomes more prominent towards the finish. Chewy and slightly rough mouthfeel. I'll have it again soon.

Dulle Teve comes across as a midline tripel: Belgian in yeast and fruity esters, uniquely bitter, but like most De Dolle beers, this is a little too exuberant in showcasing its ethanol presence over other flavors, subtracting a few points in my book. This would be good as a warmer in colder months, but I, personally, do not appreciate the "in your face" ethanol aspect of some beers. Otherwise an enjoyable tripel, though also priced overly high ($6 per bottle) for what it is.

Pours a massively tall (>4cm) head, composed of medium-sized to large bubbles and white in color. Retention is excellent, lasting severl minutes before fading to a thin cap atop the body of the beer. Lacing is present and fairly substantial, thick clumps cling to the sides of the glass in randomized locations. The body is a fairly clean, transparent, and cool golden yellow in color, with light bringing out brighter yellow hues. Carbonation is readily visible, quite active and numerous.

Aroma is of pale malt sweetness, musty Belgian yeast, and light fruit esters (baked Bosc pears, dried apples). Not a poor aroma at all, but not as exuberant or expressive as others in the style. Perhaps it's age?

Overall flavor is of pale malt sweetness, musty Belgian yeast, some fruity esters, and ethanol. The closing bitterness is a nice, unique touch, though the ethanol obviousness detracts from the enjoyment for me. Front of tongue tastes pale malt sweetness, fruit esters, ethanol, slightly musty Belgian-style yeast. Mid-palate is of pale candi sugar, pale malt sweetness, baked Bosc pears, dried apple slices, and light Belgian yeast with honey-vanilla flavors. Back of palate features somewhat prominent ethanol with continued pale malt and candi sugar sweetness, some bright fruity esters, light Belgian yeast, and dried hay. Pleasant lingering bitterness in the aftertaste, along with light mustiness, pale malt sweetness, baked pear esters, and light Belgian yeast. Ethanol becomes more prominent in the aftertaste as the beer warms.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, resulting in a mouthfeel that is never fizzy, but gently foamy and smooth. Ethanol is rather easily noticeable on the throat and in the nostrils, less so on the tongue, and particularly so after each sip when the beer warms somewhat.

33cl bottle with quite a bit of age on it (I believe best by 07.) Poured into an Oerbier oversized wine glass, the brew appears a burnt copper color that is quite clear. However, despite a careful pour some yeast particulate makes its way into the glass. Rising bubbles of carbonation maintain more than a finger of khaki head throughout the entire experience. A swirl revives more than a finger of froth effortlessly back to the surface and produces some finger-like patterns of stringy lace.

The aroma is sweet with an essence of belgian candy sugar but contrasted with almost a cheesy to funky aspect is also present when swirled. There is a bit of earthen quality about this that blends into something more fruity like cherry, apple and/or pears. That 10% alcohol is evident but very faintly across the back when a deep whiff is taken. Once the brew goes beyond ideal temperature, there is a very soft suggestion of vinegar that while not distracting was not expected.

The flavor of this brew is quite bready with malt that blends into a touch of cardboard-like oxidation. Some sweetness is present tasting a bit like caramel, toffee and transitions into more of a fruity alcohol note like apple and/or pear skins. Some earthen notes are ever present with every sip that breaks up the experience a bit. The aftertaste has a very faint suggestion of cider. I hate to say this but the overall flavors of this brew are better while colder. As the brew comes up to temperature, the alcohol inclusion becomes almost solvent and numbing to the palate.

This is a medium bodied brew with a lively but not overdone amount of carbonation. The flavors are spot on for what anyone could want/expect in a tripel. However, despite this brew having quite a bit of age on it, the alcohol is well pronounced but integrated fairly decently in this brew. If anything, the warmth of this brew distracts just a bit from the overall ease of drinkability. The last time I had this brew it was from a 750ml that was 17 years old. It was not the best of experiences but this even with its own significant aging was much better. I am curious now about having a bottle as fresh as possible just for the sake of comparison. If you havent had this yet, what are you waiting for? I will need to put this on the to-do list to grab more of these when I see them.

Served in a Sweetwater mini-snifter.

2002 vintage. By now, she must indeed be pretty pissed... Anyway, this stuff pours a lightly-hazy amber-gold topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises light banana, mild vanilla, wheat, mild booze, and light orange peel. The taste brings in more of the same, with a good deal more funk and tartness, which actually kinda works here. The body is a very light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry, somewhat sticky finish. Overall, a surprisingly tasty tripel, one whose age and "abnormal" characteristics somehow haven't had any negative influence on things, but rather seem to have augmented them ever-so-slightly.

2010 vintage

a - poured a three-fingers thick fluffy off-white head into a tulip glass that billowed nicely after each swirl of the glass. the body was a hazy amber color with a few yeast floaties in the glass.
s - very floral and sweet like honey.
t - lots of fruit flavors here reminiscent of pears and apples.
m - medium and slick but becomes more effervescent as it warms.
o - terrific tripel and one i'll go back to again.

A - opened with a slightly delayed gushing despite having had a stable home prior to opening, and as such roused some of the yeast, resulting in a cloudy beer with floaties in it; otherwise, pours a sienna color with a one finger larger bubbled off-white head with good retention, as all the small bubbles seem to stick around

S - this brewery is quite good at getting a very appealing raisinets aroma (see also the Oerbier) to come out, with just a hint of ethanol to give some complexity to the various sugars at work here, a wildflower honey and caramel aroma coming out on top with a few background notes of black licorice, some malt breadiness, a little clove

T - starts off with that caramel flavor, transitions to some peppery spiciness and clove-like phenols (and a smack of hop bitterness to balance it out) accentuated by the mildly hot ethanol finish

M - full bodied and dextrinous, almost like chewing on a caramel candy but without any kind of cloying sweetness

D - there's a lot going on in this beer, but it doesn't fatigue the palate, even though you expect it to with its strong aroma and high abv level; to some extent the phenolic/alcoholic finish does limit the drinkability some, but I certainly didn't want it stop at one with this beer

A: Pours a cloudy orange to amber color forming a medium creamy white head. Good retention. Never disappears completely leaving a thin layer and many lacings around

S: Very fruity in the nose. Plums and pears mainly with notes of caramel malts, honey and bready yeasts

T: Follows the nose. Very sweet and fruity upfront. Notes of caramel, caramel malts and bread. Honey and citrus hops in the end

M: Heavy and bit molasses body. Medium carbonation. Malty and slightly bitter aftertaste

O: Excellent drinkability. Great beer. De Dolle quality

A - Pours a very hazy orange/tan color with an initially thick, creamy white head a good two fingers thick. The foam dies down relatively fast to leave an even layer on top.

S - Pears, green apples, spicy dankness, white grapes, earthy lemons, grassy.

T - Very fruity (white grapes and pears), estery, yeasty, lemon grass, some peppery spice, some orange, cloves, honey; everything swirls and blends with a robust intensity. Clove spice and earthy lemon grass with white fruit linger on the palate for a good long time.

M - Alcohol warming on the way down lets you know it's a 10% beer. Medium body, biscuity, and velvet smooth carbonation.

O - An intense Tripel with alot of personality.

Tall coarse foam-up to start. Fruity smell with straw and a touch of the hen house. Amber color and a little hazy in the wine glass. Sparkly on the tongue.

Complex and shifting flavors. Fruity, a little sweet, and a bitter finish. Deep yeasty flavor with the Belgian bitterness. Some heat from the alcohol. Intense flavor that is just right for sipping, but this is some serious stuff. Flavor of apples with skins, grain, butter. Rich taste balanced by the dry heat. Long yeasty, bitter aftertaste with that cidery nose of fermenting fruit. A little acidic and flinty. Pours with the big white foam to the last half inch.

From the 33 cl bottle bought in Gent at Beer and Gin House. White cap says bottled March 2012. A beer well worth trying if you're looking for an education in Belgian beers.

Bottled on June 2012.

Hazy faded gold color with a fluffy white head. Immediately I can tell, smells so different then most tripels I've had. Lots of sweet apples and pears, touches of pineapple and dried apricot. Smells like sweet pure raw sugared fruit. Touches of dark fruit and spiced yeast. This brew is living up to it's score in the nose alone, i cant wait to taste it. Lots of clingy lacing. Slight whiffs of booze but it's expected from the style.

Sweet fruit flavors like those on the nose. Big spicy clove on the back end of the tongue. Bright fluffy body spicy dry finish. Lingering sweetness. Damn good beer. Wish it wasn't so damn expensive. Sweet undertones of banana and dried currants. Touches of plums. A very deep beer with loads of herbal spice and amazingly complex finish.

Simply put, this beer is rather amazing. Super dry, yet super sweet, and everything in between. I love it.

Man. Been a very long time since I've had this beer; and I've probably been doing myself a disservice. So smooth and distinct. Really even and well balanced. I love this brewery and I love all their beers. Poured a massive all-head in a vanilla cream froth with long life. The body is a hazy golden yellow. Not much of a smell initially but caramel and dried fruit slowly emerge. The taste is quite complex with candies like butterscotch and caramel, fruits like pineapple and fig, and a touch of sourness. Long finish. Nice tripel.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Light golden tan/yellow, fizzy, 2 inch head and lots of lacing.

Smell - Fruits, yeasts, spices, very grazzy/earthy, bread, biscuit, orange and grapefruit hops, caramal malts. Added sugars. Pineapple, grapes, apple, lemon, pear, banana...yes very floral.

Taste - Very fruity and sweet at first sip. Lots of spices, along with all the sweet fruits and belgium yeasts to relaly make this intense. Malts are present and add more sweetness with the caramel flavors. A bit of alcohol at the finish.

Mouthfeel - Well whole mouth gets sugars and spices. Tounge and palate really get the same. Tons of sweet fruits and spices with malt backbone. The afertaste is sweet and fruity.

OVerall - Very tasty and easy to enjoy. The sweetness is slighty overpowering, therefor taking away from the balance of a world class tripel. If you like tripels, or very sweet, floral belgium beers, this is a must try. Cant touch St. Bernardus or la fin du monde in balance and price, but is for sure worth a drink.

Pours a clear metallic gold in my Duvel tulip with three fingers head that sticks to the glass in patches. I got a little sediment in the glass which is stirred around quite a bit by the carbonation from the etching at the stem. Foam sticks around to the end, leaving a somewhat thin layer. Initial whiff is full of green apples, which is kinda weird since I've never gotten that from a Tripel. After the head settles down I get the spices I've come to know and love from a Belgian: allspice and clove. Also get some orange and excotic citrus, almost like papaya or something. Hard to get the malt under all this, but it's somewhat biscuity for a Belgian. Taste starts out light with effervescence but gets a bit heavy with honey and nectary flavors. The spices come after the swallow and stick in the mouth and throat. It's not too heavy, though, as the alcohol comes back at the end, but very light. Just a hint of the ABV. The feel gives the impression of being very balanced with a dry aftertaste.

This borders on being too spicy, sticking to the back of your throat, but it never gets there. That's commendable, but it could use some banana esters to balance that out. Lots of goodness in here, but a bit too heavy to make it an excellent Tripel.

Surprising find at Calandro's, Baton Rouge. Last one on the shelf and the only De Dolle beer in stock. $6 for the 11.2 oz single. Bottled September 2011.

A: Towering head. Dark for a tripel. Looks murky and ciderlike.

S: Actually smells ciderlike also. Fermented apple, plums, honey, and booze. Smells huge. Wouldn't peg it as a triple based on aroma.

T: Explosive. Fermented fruit, especially apples. Quite sweet. Some heat. Unbelievable richness.

M: So rich. Very warming. Not as carbonated as a standard triple.

O: High score for originality and overall gravitas. An indulgent ass-kicker.
