One of the later releases from this brewery, they already had that blackhawk stout that was totally serviceable, but I guess they wanted an oatmeal variant or completely different beer, I dunno. To me, seemed like a very similar recipe with the variable of oats included and less barley overall.
Pours nice and relatively thick, hearty black pour with 4/5" tan head. Aroma of entirely roasted malt, get ye adjuncts out my face. Taste rocks a similar note: roasted malt. You get the usual impressions from this beer, chocolate and coffee flavor produced via the level of roast and specialty (chocolate malt), bouyed by a smoother mouth feel brought on by the use of oats. This did have a chewier, thicker presence than BlackHawk that went a little milderand drier than this one. In the 6 pack I got, they were all pretty consistent and reluctant to notice any change over those 6 bottles in over one year's time.
Satisfied cutting your teeth on the style, much less a continual enjoyment of it 25+ years later. Reliable.

Black, small tan head soon thins to foamy ring.
Aroma is nice and full, sweet roasty prune.
Taste is as above, nicely balanced, slightly on the sweeter side but with a touch of dryness, not complex but a good, solid, enjoyable oatmeal stout, highly drinkable.

Dark and rich with a tight carbonization. Good value at TJ's.
