Poured two fingers of head on a black body. Looks nice.
The aroma is chocolate, roasted malt and a little coffee. Pretty good except for a slight metallic note.
The taste is watered down roasted malt with metallic undertones. There's a mild bitterness at the end.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
An easy drinker. The metallic notes took some points away, but not good overall.

Pours an opaque dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy latticework of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and a mild char aroma. Taste is much the same with a slight soy sauce taste on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that seems to be much more stout forward compared to the other beer it's blended with.

Enjoyed in a snifter
A: pours a deep brown that does not allow any light to permeate, pours with a nice finger of very active and fizzy head which dissipates rapidly, leaves
S: nice scent, gentle notes of dark fruits with a slight sweetness behind it
T: taste pretty much mirrors the scent with some nice coccoa notes which add a nice depth
M: a very smooth brew on the palate, virtually no carbonation tingle, leaves the mouth cleanly
O: I was a bit weary of buying this bottle simply because it looks kind of cheap and tacky at face value, also I had no idea how long it had been sitting on the shelf for since there was no bottling date, quite pleasantly surprised by this well balanced beer

Something a little special. Bourbon cask conditioned Black Eye from the Mendocino east coast brewery, served at Saratoga Beer week. Very crisp. Very tasty. Coffee and chocolate notes overlaid with woodsy oak and sweet bourbon, sufficient hops. Much better mouth feel than the straight on tap Black Eye.
Excellent with food. I would follow this beer anywhere.

Appearance - Pours a near black, deep brown. The head is an off-white or light tan and is 2 fingers thick. The head has good staying power, but eventually gives way to an unyielding, sticky lace.
Smell - Roasted coffee notes, a bit of caramel. Both beers are certainly present in the aroma.
Taste - Faint coffee roast to start, followed by some nice, sweet caramel notes.
Mouthfeel - Light-to-Medium body, fitting carbonation. Goes down fairly smooth. This should be thicker. I blame the Black Hawk.
Overall - This is a pretty good Black and Tan, especially as pre-bottled B&T's go. I can't help thinking, though, that Mendocino would be better served using their Imperial Stout as opposed to the Black Hawk.

dark brown color with nearly no light shining though. This gave way to a smallish, but near permanent head of light tan lacing that really just seemed to do the job quite nicely. Settling down it coated the glass and left large sticky lacing all throughout. Really a classic look for a dark porter, but we will see where this goes.
Aroma is hoppy as heck. Deep citrus and pine hops lead the charge here. Crisp, clean and definitely very full. I was quite impressed with the way this one was starting off now. Warming allowed some nice touches of roasted malt and light cocoa to balance in. First sip though left no doubt in my mind as to the direction this one was going in. Rich hop notes dominate every ounce of flavor here. Piercing at times with pine and grapefruit taking turns with the destruction of my taste buds.

Found a bomber fairly cheap so I picked one up at Shadyside Giant Eagle for $4.79
A - Well it looks like a mix of both ales since it's fairly dark (stout) but has a slight amber hue on the bottom (old ale) The head is a 1/4 inch creamy foam that is only slightly dark in color.
S - Well I get some slight oak and toffee from the Old ale side and also a solid bit of roast from the stout side. Should be interesting.
T - Taste is lighter than I expected but both are represented well mostly the stout side providing a nice roasty finish. It is very balanced.
M - Thinner than both the beers separately but easier to drink.
Overall I didn't have much expectation for this but it was a very tasty black and tan in fact one of the best I had so far (out of only a few) Try it if you like the style!
