Virtually pitch black with a tin bubbly light brown lace.
Creamy malt sweetness is shunned away by a semi acrid roasted malt smell. Suggestions of coffee and charcoal come to mind.
Loose medium body with a moderate carbonation that lacks crispness and smoothness. Roasted malt flavour is a bit narrow and sticks with the sweetness to lay down faint chocolate and burnt flavours. Mild earthy tones from the malt and yeast come through towards the end with a small acrid like taste also. Finishes on the dry side with more earthy tones.
A decent stout, nothing special … just a well rounded stout that lacks bit of character.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. No freshness date.
Appearance: Pitch black in the glass with a massive rocky tan foam head.
Smell: Blackstrap molasses, dark fruits, rich-deep caramel/toffee, coffee with a delicate hop bouquet. I also get a clean "milky" aroma too.
Taste: Active level of carbonation that induces a creamy and refreshing mouthfeel. Body is full and even. Initial flavour is a limey hop character that races along the palate with a slightly dry pucker and bite. It fades into a robust roasted astringency, then melds with an earthy black malt flavour. Other malt flavours include burnt, raisin, black liquorice and a touch of sweet caramel and chocolate. Finish is dry, clean for all that's going on, with some grain in the back.
Notes: Black Hawk Stout one helluva stout, and another top-notch beer from Mendocino. Quite complex and what you'd also expect from Mendocino. Most definitely give it a try.

Appearance - Pours a near black, deep brown with a nice tan 2-finger head. Fair retention. Streaky lacing with little stick.
Smell - Faint aroma throughout. Hints of milk chocolate and coffee roastiness. Ghostly hint of fruity esters.
Taste - Moderate notes of powered chocolate, followed by faint fruity ester sweetness and a light coffee roast finish.
Mouthfeel - Light to medium body, with fair carbonation. Fluffy, somewhat creamy at first, but dies quickly as the beer warms. Finishes with slight dryness.
Overall - This is my second go-around with this beer, and while I've enjoyed it more this time, it still doesn't quite hit the spot. It's a beer I don't mind drinking, so long as I don't have to pay for it.

Mendocino Black Hawk Stout has a thick, creamy, beige head, a very dark brown (essentially black) appearance, with reddish-brown highlights at the edges, and some thin lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of dark-roasted coffee, black bread crust, and chocolate powder. Taste is of charcoal, burnt sugar, black bread, dark bread crust, cocoa powder, milk, cream, dark cherries, licorice, and a minimal bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Mendocino Black Hawk Stout finishes semi-dry, easy going, and highly drinkable. Overall, this is another great one from Mendocino!
