I had this on tap at Ballast Point. It pours a very dark cola brown and opaque. The head is a light taupe color. The head fades to a thin cap quickly. Coffee nose. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Creamy to the finish. Standard stout. But, miles better than Guinness.

A - Looks a typical stout. A black colored beer with a brown coolwhip head.

S - Sweet roasted black coffee grinds and bitter dark chocolate meld together in the bouquet.

T - An interesting profile of flavors. Surely some dark coffee notes and dry dark grains, but a forward presence of sweet milky chocolate. I thought this would be very robust from the nose, but it's milder than the smell leads on. Some hop notes shining through, cutting the darkness.

M - A smooth and easy drinking beer. It's medium body and light carbonation allow the drinker to enjoy the flavors fully.

O - So it's not a rich or robust stout but it's definitely drinkable and enjoyable. Wouldn't grab it if you're looking for a kick in the mouth.

Received in a tulip at Ballast Point tap room. Thin layer of tight whitish foam atop a black body. Looks inviting.

Not much here, vague coffee, and ash. Hint of simple syrup and spent grain, mild aroma.

Immediate coffee with sweetened creamer, raw cereal grains, bread, and a bit of charred wood. Finishes drying with residual lactose acidity and cocoa powder, a touch chalky.

Drink is really smooth, silky. Medium to light bodied with nitro-like carbonation. No hint of alcohol anywhere.

A one dimensional beer, not much complexity , alot of lighter spectrum stout character and flavors but really this beer that flaunts body and feel over taste. Very easy to drink, the oatmeal does it's job to create that creamy texture.

On Nitro-tap at Capitol Beer and Tap Room in Sacramento, CA on 9/21/12

Appearance - Served near black with a dark, ruby red hue. Head is half a finger thick, light tan and appears silky. Retention holds well. Decent stick.

Smell - Fine notes of cocoa and oat hit the nostrils first, with the faintest hint of coffee buried well beneath.

Taste - Moderate roasted malt character; sweet milk chocolate, cocoa and oat rounds out the predominant flavor. Not much development from start to finish. Clean, with the subtlest hint of mint in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body. Silky, smooth nitro carbonation. Creamy. Goes down with a slick, supurb smoothness.

Overall - A good effort by Ballast on their oatmeal stout, but it ultimately falls a bit short. Boring, simple flavor profile redeemed by it's creamy, nitro'ed mouthfeel.
