draft at Specific Gravity, Salisbury

a: served in a standard shaker pint, this ipa is a caramel amber in color, capped with a thick, frothy layer of carbonation that retains a full layer and leaves heavy lace on the glass

s: juicy, bright hops smell of grapefruit, passionfruit, and mango; supported by a solid caramel malt backbone, malt sweetness and juicy fruit flavors in the middle, with a big bitterness taking up the finish

m: carbonated to somewhere on the lower end of moderate - smooth but with enough air to carry the flavors, body moderate with some sweet weight

t: passion fruit is the dominant hop flavor on the palate, with a full body of sweet caramel malts constructing a nice balance, big flavors all around, finishing long with a strong bitterness

o: a high-quality ipa that hits on all the right notes, this one tends towards the sweeter side with more caramel than some - which I tend to dig

A-dark golden with a thin white head

S-very hoppy and grapefruity with lots of tropical fruit smells. Smells good.

T-comes in with a taste of hoppy fruit punch.  Everytime I take a drink, I get a different fruity flavor. It's good. Only slightly bitter.

M-medium carbonation with a semi-dry finish

O-This was an okay ipa, maybe not as good as its big brother lot 6. It's actually a pretty slow drinker too. Good initial flavors though

On tap in apint glass.

A-dark golden copper color with a 1+ finger head, loads of clingy lacing.

S-pine and citrus just like an IPA should.

T-a citrus hop bite from start to finish with a gentle roasty malt backround. Very tasty.

M-Cool and full. good body and carbonation. No burn.

O-A rock solid IPA that looks, tastes, and smells great.

I was lucky to find and choose this beer on a recent trip to the Ocean City, MD area. I drank it three seperate times at three different pubs and it was blue ribbon each time.

Lot 3 has a burnt orange colored body with an off-white head. Good retention, and the lacing stays on my glass in large sheets.

The aroma is aggressively hoppy, with loads of grapefruit and citrus smells.

Very bright hop profile, with grapefruit rind, oranges and other citrus flavors coming through. A dose of resin with a bit of a grassy taste too it accompanies a good bit of bitterness. Plenty of sweet malts to balance things out a little but, but still hop forward.

Body and carbonation are both pretty good.

Overall I enjoyed Lot 3, more so than Lot 6 actually.

Served in a pint glass at Mellow Mushroom.

A: Very clear. Half a finger of head fades fast. Great lacing. Pale copper.

S: Strong, astringent hops. Aromatic and floral. I recognise the variety, but can't place it. Amarillo? Earthy-spicy. Pleasant.

T/M: Similar to the smell. Earthy-bitter-herbal hops dominate the relatively thin-bodied beer. Low carbonation, somewhat flat feel. The aftertaste is hoppy and bitter, but not compelling. The herbal character reminds me of a meat rub.

O: Goodish IPA, but disappointing (i.e., not an A- beer). Drinkable, especially for hopheads, but probably not something I'd order again. Nothing I'd steer you away from either.

On-tap while visiting the Eastern Shore of Maryland:

The beer appeared a bright, clear orange color with a dense white head that was very well retained. Nice lacing to show for the well-constructed head. The beer had a very nice aroma to it...plenty of hops, mainly citrus, but during the beer, I did notice more malted barley creeping into the aroma. Very nice. The taste is good, nice and hoppy, as expected, and leaves a nice bitter taste through and into the aftertaste as well. The beer had a medium feel in the mouth, a bit oily, but with good carbonation, clean and refreshing. Overall, this was a well done, pretty well balanced IPA. I hope that I get to the area again for some more.

Had this on tap at Ruth's Chris steak house in Ocean City MD.

A- Dark Orange/Copper type color with a small head

S- Pine and Citrus, just as the server suggested.

T-Hops from the beginning to the end with the citrus and pine flavors lingering on your tongue.

O- Above average IPA that is very drinkable. I loved the smell and the taste of the hops with an easy malt backbone. Had to make a small detour on the way home to pick up a growler from the brewery.

Appearance: orange in color with a 1" head that slowly falls to spotty surface covering. Mild lace develops.

Smell: light caramel, floral bitterness, and some orange tones are easy to detect.

Taste: caramel, orange, and a nice floral bitterness create a well balanced IPA. Alcohol is a bit noticable.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Lightly crisp throughout. Aftertaste focuses on floral bitterness.

Overall: a very easy to drink beer with a nice balanced flavor. Worthy of a try.

Had on tap at the pickled pig in Rehoboth beach. Poured a nice two finger thick head of white and had excellent retention. Lace was sticky and quite evident throughout the entire session. Dark honey color with mild amber flecks are right on in my opinion. Loved the color. Right away the nose is full of bright citrusy hops backed by piney and somewhat grassy earthyness. The malt character is light vanilla and plenty of toasted malt and complex caramel sugars. I am loving this one already. The hop profile is great and now I'm extrememly curious to know what they used. Right about half way through as it warms up you get a bit more grapefruit than pinkness and it has a wonderful aftertaste. Silky on the tongue and has one more written All over it.

On draft @ The Broad Axe. Never heard of it before so I decided to give it a shot. Pours a slightly hazy amber/copper color with a medium white head. Nose is pretty heavy on the piney hops. Some Citrus hops and sweet pale malt also show up. The flavor is more citrusy and sweet than the aroma lets on. I was thinking it was going to have more of that spicy hop bite to it. Nonetheless, good hop character and good flavor but the finish is a little weak and watery. The flavor seems to fade quickly. Medium body and slick mouthfeel really makes this beer quite sessionable and easy to drink. I really liked it. I want to try more from this brewery. Could definitely throw a few of these back without being overwhelmed by the flavor.

Had this on-tap at Jessop's. Pours a nice translucent golden color extremely thick white heading. Lacing is all over the place.Quite impressive look.

Smell again a score. Sweet and syrupy caramel notes just smells like a toothache. Heavy citrus and pine aroma's. Hoppy as hell.

Taste a tad different. Not as hoppy as one would have thought from the nose of it. The hops are there but not in full force at first. Taste's of grapefruits and citrus at first but in the background is the toasted breadiness,in which plays a key role in bringing this all together.Semi bitter and dry in the finish.

Mouth is light-medium bodied.Tremendous carbonation and not watered down, good balance. Some slick hop oiliness left in the mouth.

A great all around IPA.

During a recent visit to Alewife, Baltimore's newest craft beer venue (See My Review), I discovered this new brewery, which is somewhat up the road from Charm City in Delaware. The appearance is pleasing, if not atypical of the style: it is cloudy amber and crowned by a vanilla sheen; within one espies a sparse school of carbonation bubbles as it makes its way to the surface.

The nose detects the subtle citrusy sweetness of grapefruit juice, while the palate receives a biscuity smooth wash of hop and malt. This is a nice little beer that makes for comfortable and non-aggressive quaff be it in Baltimore, Delaware, or Wherever. Does this mean Dogfish Head has a local rival? Who knows?

On tap at Lures.

Pours a faded and murky golden amber with little retention or lacing. Aroma and flavor are predominantly piney and herbal. Some malt sweetness tries to balance out the aggressive pine bitterness in the flavor but fails and the finish is a sticky, wet herbal mess. Medium bodied with strong, sharp carbonation. Not offensive, but remarkably forgettable.

On tap at the Brewery.

A - Into a pint glass, this IPA is the standard orange color you would expect from an IPA. Very little head, just a thin white layer on top of the beer, which surprisingly leave a lot of lacing with each sip.

S - Hops. Grapefruit, sweet citrus, and pint. Some bready malts in there, but also, standard for an IPA. While I say standard, that's not bad. If it hits, and exceeds the standard, that's a good thing.

T - Very hop forward, but not all bitterness. Nice citrus and earthy mix. Bitterness is there, but very well balanced with sweetness. This one exceeds the standard in my opinion.

M - Medium bodied, but hangs around a while. This was very fresh at the brewery, so the hop oils hung around very nicely at this age. Moderately carbonated, which was delightful at the time.

D - Very happy this is available in bottles, and year round at this point. I could easily see this become a staple in my fridge, and kegerator. Drink up folks, this one is right up there with the best of them.

Served on-tap in a clear pint glass at Mellow Mushroom (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Mild haze in this honey golden brew with tightly bubbled, frothy, 1-finger off-white head with excellent retention and prodigious lacing.

S: More pungent than from the bottle despite the cold serving temp. Big grapefruit, citrus component coupled artfully with spicy hops contribution as well. Some floral notes are there too. Pale malt sweetness is not forgtten, but the hops take center-stage.

T: The flavor echoes the nose and then some with a crisp, pale malt sweetness with a hint of toastiness giving way to grapefruit, mango, and floral hoppiness with some spicy notes through the middle. Wow -- a really nicely crafted brew.

M: Medium-bodied, slick feel, excellent for the style.

D: I tried this in the bottle last night, and I like this even better on-tap. Exudes more of the pungent grapefruit and spiciness without forgetting the body and pale malt character of the best IPAs. Look this one up.

I had this on tap at Specific Gravity in Salisbury MD. Served chilled in a pint.

A deep golden w/ amber hues and thick creamy cap w/ tiny beading. The lace sticks well and the clarity/retention is good. The smell has a lot of hop aroma w/ plenty of citrus notes and mild tropical tinges, a mellow malt sweet note is there too. The feel is medium more towrad the heavy side of medium, but plenty of carbonation and acidity balance the sweetness of the beer, bitterness is moderate.

The taste is very hoppy with a resinous citrus and mild pine quality a light lemony zest tinge in there with a nice flavor of caramel malt underneath, but the IPA is pretty dry as it finishes and has a light alcohol and spice element to compliement the highly herbal and grapefruit aspects. The IPA drinks like a much smaller beer and I caught myself having 2 pints very quickly so I will say for my taste this is really drinkable - cheers!

Beer served on draft at a local beer bar. Now I don't BELIEVE in evolution but I can't turn down a new IPA. BTW I do BELIEVE in evolution.

Beer is served in a shaker pint. Beer is amber and clear. Forms a white thin head that leaves some lacing on the glass and is propped up by moderate to low carbonation. Looks fine. Its a little dark but still looks good.

The aroma is mostly piny with a little malt. Smells OK.

Beer is medium body with moderate carbonation in the mouth. Beer is sweet and moderately bitter but the bitterness does grow with time. Its mildly dry in the back and has no aftertaste. Mouthfeel is OK and drinkability is good.

had on tap at specific gravity in salisbury. Pours a transparent amber color with less that a one finger head that leaves lacing. The smell is floral hops and citrus. The taste is all hops at first but followed quickly by the citrus tastes and follows through with sweet malt. Not as hoppy as many IPAs I love but theres a good hop presence and makes a pretty good IPA. Solid mouthfeel and good drinkability.

On tap at Mahaffey's today.

The beer pours an amber orange color with good head retention and lacing. The nose on this IPA is very perfumy, with an orange and grapefruit citrus aroma, but with hints of jelly beans (this is not a bad thing). This is a very nice smelling IPA. Flavors replicate the nose, but I like the bitter and dry finish. There's just enough malt to counter and balance the bitterness, which personally is all I require. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with plenty of flavor, but I'm impressed by how light on its feet this IPA is. The alcohol is very well disguised, and so drinkability is very, very good.

This is a very solid, easy to appreciate IPA from this (relatively) new brewpub.

I had the pleasure of sampling lot 1 and 2 of this beer and it's obvious why they stuck with #3. Golden caramel color with a white foamy head. Aroma is heavy with citrus and pine. Agressive hoppy taste up front with a malty backbone. Feels great crossing your palette and has a great drinkability factor. I highly recommend this IPA.

A: Dark orange full of vibrant effervesce. Peanut shell toned head is average in heigth and retention. Lacing is spotty with spongy dabs on the vessel.

S: Fresh hops, piney-orange-citrus of moderate awarenss. Okay but a little played out and hardly the attention getter in a tough field.

T: Malty flavor, orange citrus, nice depth upon the first taking. Piney-citrus hops are bitter, flowery with a big malting of toasted bread that is warming. Spicy pine bite on the back end with just the slightest of malt sweetness upfront that is soon swallowed by a flowery citrus bitterness. A touch more complexity adn a solid 4.0 rating may be in order.

M: Vibrant carbonation, a big malt lush helping, sharp and tingly, bready and full. Sharp bitterness after the swallow.

O: An ordinary nose turns to a malt forward experience for flavor. Good level of bitterness, strong carbonation factor that is bitter, but not exactly sharply defining. Good malt support, good drinkability and good ibus to boot.

First from Evolution!!

Pours out a nice deep orange with about 2 fingers of a nice, white fluffy head.

The aroma has a decent amount of pine followed by some grapefruit, citrus and some caramel malt and bready malt notes too.

The taste is also very pine forward with a nice amount of grapefruit and some light citrus notes. On the backend there is some sweet caramel notes with some slight bready malt. Not overly complex.

The body is medium and the mouthfeel is crisp.

This is not the most mindblowing or complex IPA I have ever had, but it has a lot of nice hop notes and some decent bitterness. It's a solid example of the IPA style and should be tried at least once. Very refreshing.

12oz bottled February 2013. Served at around 40F.

Pours lightly hazy copper/amber with a one finger off-white head that leaves a ring of lacing and recedes to a small cap.

Aroma is primarily pine, along with earthy & resinous hops, hint of citrus rind, some apricot, decent caramel and bready malt backbone. OK aroma. Good strength.

Flavor is pine, resinous & earthy hops, apricot, touch of citrus, decent bit of caramel and a grainy malt presence, mild to moderate sweetness, strong bitterness, moderate alcohol.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, oily, good carbonation.

Solid IPA, but nothing spectacular. Glad to have a chance to try it, but there are better ones out there.

A - Nice orange/amber cast with only a touch of haze. Two-fingered foamy/creamy head that left an abundance of lacing on the sides of the glass (Standard pint).

S - Nice carmel, malt and orange notes with maybe a bit of apricot or peach. For as hoppy as this is, I only detected a trace of pine.

T - I have Evolution brews flying way under my radar, even being a MD native, but this is a damn fine IPA. Clean malty sweetness that quickly yields to a fresh hoppy flavor whose bitterness lingers on the a good long while. I was pleasantly surprised by 'ole Number 3--it has everything I seek in an IPA.

M - Mouthfeel is good. Only a bit sticky, very clean and refreshing.

O - Overall I only have good things to say about this IPA. Great flavor, excellent hop profile, clean fresh taste--I will definitely add it to my rotation of "go-to" IPA's.
