A generous extra from a trader. 12oz bottle into a snifter.

Black with a touch of red around the edges. Little head recedes to a film. The beer is relatively opaque with just a touch of light passing through. The color is nice but the lack of head makes me think twice before diving in.

The beer smells of roasted malt with a touch of smoke and chocolate. Some coffee notes are also observed along withs some sweet caramelized malt. Very pleasant and inviting nose.

The taste has a nice smoked edge. There's some great chocolate and coffee notes from the roasted malt, and, thankfully the acidity is kept low and this doesn't become acrid. The sweetness and bitter/earthy flavors live together in perfect harmony. This isn't super-complex but has some depth that sets it apart from some simpler takes on the style.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation that is just a touch more sparkling than I like. That being said, I enjoyed this and would drink it again. It's certainly more enjoyable than some porters I've had recently.

On tap in a pint glass.

A- Opaque dark brown/black color with a thick mocha colored head that tapers to a film. Not much lacing. A very good looking brew.

S-Roasted dark malts, strong roasted dark coffee, dark chocolate. Can darkness be a smell?!?

T- Lots of dark roasted malt and dark roasted coffee, very strong coffee. Dark bitter choolate flavor, too. The roasting is pushed to the max, just shy of burnt.

M-Crisp, solid feel. Lots of carbonation. Plenty of body and lasting flavors.

O- This beer screams dark roasting and strong coffee working together well.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of coffee, a touch of cocoa. Taste is big on coffee, a hint of cocoa, bitter, just a little off somehow, dry and a bit metallic at the finish. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Pours pitch black with a small white head.

The smell is a kind of burning smell, roasted malts, seems to fade as the beer warms.

The taste is roasted bitter coffee, with an orange flavour coming through in the after taste.

Mouthfeel is pretty thin with medium carbonation.

Not a fan of this beer at all, I enjoyed evo's ipa but this beer is pretty close to a drain pour. Glad I only bought a single.

A- Dark brown body with no transparency. Foamy tan head that leaves thick lacing on the glass.

S- Roasted malts, coffee, some caramel malts too. Nothing jumps out, but overall pretty appealing.

T- Very similar to the aroma, nothing jumps out, but it is not bad. Somewhat of a bitter taste comes through too with a slight metallic taste.

M- Incredibly dry for a porter. Not really a full bodied as most porters. Crisp bite towards the end.

O- I prefer a more full-bodied porter like Bells or Founders. I found this one to be to be slightly off.

Honestly, this strikes me as more of an English porter. Good character throughout, but not overtly boisterous. Nice malty sweet tones. Minimal chocolate and what seems almost like molasses. Smooth feel. A nice pleasant beer to drink. My second beer from this brewery and I like what I am seeing. I look forward to trying others from their lineup.

12 oz bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark burnt sienna color. It's not completely opaque at all, like many porters tend to be. The head is a one finger offwhite shade that fades into a thin film with some collaring around the edge of the glass.

S: A fairly chocolaty porter; it's more dry than milky sweet, though. Some nuts, dark unroasted malts, and hazelnut coffee tie these qualities together. Not particularly grabbing or expressive, but good.

T: Even drier than the nose suggested. There are some roasted nuts to start, some lactose cream flavors in the midtaste, and a finish of coffee with just a hint of dry chocolate. I also notice a twinge of finishing hops; not just in the light bitterness, but with the mildly acidic and mineral-esque kick in the aftertaste, as well.

M: Light bodied, with good carbonation, and a crisp, dry finishing kick. About what I expect from a porter.

O: For better or worse, it's a standard porter. Granted, it's a standard porter that's executed quite well; however this lacks many qualities that would enable it to stand out from its brethren. It's one to consider purchasing, but perhaps not one to seek out.

I don't quite recall where I picked this up, I suppose in Maryland in my biannual trips to the cliffs of Calvert County, this has been in my cellar for some months, I have a big boy ABV wise to taste after this so I thought this would be a good warmer upper...

eyes....
Jagmanimous head on this, absolutely 4 fingers tall and holding... and holding...
the head does not explode but is more like the blob, it just grows and keeps grumbling along with its bad self, nice and dark, still on the lighter side of completely opaque, lots of bubbles rising up from the dark depths feeding the blob head endlessly it seems

nose...
sweet dried cocoa, milk chocolate, hints of smoke and licorice, a touch o' molasses, pretty nice for a little ole porter

taste etc...
medium body and boy does the sip improve feel wise when you incorporate some of the fizz, almost creamy, the taste follows the nose here, nice chocolate tones, a bit of dryish flavor, a bit of ash/smoke in the aftertaste, nothing dominant and then a nice subtle bitterness to finish off, nothing is over whelming, toward the end I am getting a touch more molasses before the bitter twang

verdict?
a really nice porter, why the hell was I hiding this in the cellar ? next time out in MD I will seek this out on tap, very nice beer, worth checking out.
