750ml poured into a tulip. I guess this is the most recent version listed (2012 made with elderberries.) It pours a ruby brown mahogany color with a thick khaki head. A full wall of patchy lace sticks to the glass.
The aroma is fresh and juicy with an unidentifiable fruity character. Some hops are noted with an herbal element overtop a chocolate malt scent. It is a bit tangy smelling towards the back.
The taste is like chocolate covered fruit. Some tangy alcohol upfront blends into a mild peppery quality. A sweetness like caramel or toffee fades into the aftertaste. Overall it is a unique combination of flavors but isnt bad. The tangy element was a bit of an outlier in the profile.
This is medium bodied and modestly carbonated. An ok beer by Upright standards. I would not pass on trying this again but at the same time, I think other Upright offerings are more deserving of your money.

A: 1/2" tan head that dissipated quickly over brown liquid.
S: Red wine and lactic sourness.
T: Coconut, red wine, lactic sourness, orange peel, lemon, grass and a bitter and somewhat oily and woody finish. Very complex.
M: Medium viscosity and a medium level of creamy carbonation. Beautiful.
O: This beer is unbelievable and under-appreciated. I can't believe it took me this long to try it.

Appearance. Pours a deep red-brown with a finger of khaki head.
Smell. Light and fruity saison yeast, some nice barrel wood and a little lactic sourness with some light sweet spice.
Taste. Spicy saison yeast and red wine tang with a good hit of barrel wood. There's a little malt, not caramel tasting but somewhere along those lines, fairly dry. Some peppery spice and maybe a little sweet spice as well, but it's very faint. Great stuff.
Mouthfeel. Medium body, medium+ fine but fairly soft carbonation.
Overall. I've passed this one by many times like many others. This is one of those cases where I feel dumb for doing so. Great beer that I'll be buying again.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass at Smoke & Barrel DC for the bottle share. Not sure of batch. From notes.
A nice light tan brown, kind of a mix of dark chestnut and mahogany body. Head unfortunately disappeared before I could see what color it was. Otherwise straightforward and appealing.
Bouquet is a nice light tannic sour quality. Hints of light brown toasty bread hide in the back with a spicy yeasty character, and brown ale like nutty malts. Pleasant aroma and balanced and somewhat distinct.
Good tannic nutty mid palate on first sip, with a nice mighty funk. Caramel really washes over the mid palate nicely particularly on the finish. A nice medium carbonation that supports the flavors nicely. Feel isn't particularly impressive, but it's perfectly fine and not distracting from the palate.
Overall this was quite a unique saison and it is one that I will remember.

I am assuming this is Batch 4
A - Pours a light brown with an explosive tan head, pretty active but fades rather quickly.
S - Lots of barrel tones, wood, spices - dark.
T - Dark spices, earthy barrel notes, woody.
D - Great carbonation with a light body.
O - Dark, spices, barrel. Good but seems a bit like all the others.

Bottle (2012)
Acquired via trade
Thanks, libbey!
Murky dark brown and dark ruby with a small cap of brown bubbles atop. Leaves the glass spotted with stick.
There's some definite lactic sour character, which surprised me, in the aroma, along with dark cherries, earth, lots of sharp oak notes, and a very mild wet hay character. Complex, and slightly sweet.
The flavor follows the aroma, with more lactic sour character than I was anticipating, some tart cherry notes, mild earth funk, brine, olives, and sharp, somewhat tangy yeast. Unique, complex, and overall enjoyable.
Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation.
Unique, interesting, and evolving. I'm glad I shared this a few ways as I don't think I could drink a ton of this, but overall I liked it very much.

750mL into a Hennepin glass. Pours a clear mahogany w/ a fluffy tan head, good lacing.
Aroma is tart, spicy, a little vinous, w/ hints of molasses and possibly whiskey. Intriguing.
Taste is spicy and tart with notes of brown sugar and spice. Some sweet fruity elements too - sour cherries? Great earthy woodiness from the oak, no hint of alcohol.
Mouthfeel is light and crisp, good carbonation. Aftertaste hangs around for a while.
Overall a unique, intriguing, well-made beer. Plenty of complexity to contemplate as you slowly drain the bottle.

750ml bottle; split
I think this is batch #4. all batches are different and the internet is of very little help in distinguishing
appearance: pretty sweet label design - served in my great lakes chalice, muddy garnet body, foamy off-white head with a ring of lace
smell: tart yeast, barrel, vinous
taste: a barrel aged farmhouse brown - nice vinous notes (pinot?), oak barrel, tart cherry, orange peel, juniper, bread, pepper. A real nice beer for the season.
mouthfeel: light, crisp carbonation, delicate
overall: very good
