Rye Beer |  6.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (69), on-tap (11)

Notes:
"Six is a dark rye beer with layered flavors including chocolate, caramel, pepper, wood, cherry and tropical fruit. It starts semi-dry and smooth and finishes fully dry and tart with a small bite from the hops. The overall balance of the Six makes it easy to pair with richly prepared meats along with many harder cheeses."

Malts: organic pale, caramel, rye, black
Unmalted: rolled rye
Hops: magnum, tettnanger

Bottle: Poured a dark dirty brown color ale with a generous head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramel malt with light spicy notes and some herbal notes are also discernable. Taste is also dominated by caramel malt with light chocolate presence, some spicy notes probably originating from the rye with some herbal notes and dry at the end. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Somewhat dryer then I was expecting with quite a bit of complexity.

A: Pours a massive tan foam head that lasted for about 20 minutes with four fingers. Eventually I had a glass that was a third full that I could drink.

S: Aroma of musty saison yeast, leaves, brown malt, earthy hops and molasses.

T: Lots of brown malt and molasses flavors along with a grouping of damp earth and fall flavors. Some rye mixing with more chocolate flavors and earthy crystal malt sweetness. a bit of oak and rye spices.

M: highly carbonated and a heavy body for a Saison. This is classified as a Rye beer, and even at that I would still consider this relatively thick for the style. Tongue stinging presence from carbonation.

O: Overall this is a tasty beer. Different perhaps from what I had expected but very good and worth a try.

750ml bottle pours a mahogany to burnt copper color. A robust yellowish stained tan froth sits atop with a full wall of lacing effect sticking to the glass as the cap fades.

The aromatics are comprised initially of citrus and fruity hops. An overall minor tropical feel along with a slight vegetative inclusion. That familiar scent of fruity to bready rye comes out more as the brew warms up.

The taste includes notes of caramel and toffee. Slight sweetness blends into more of a toasty rye bread flavor. It has almost a mineral-like bitterness and then a vegetative to dirty fruit character reminescent of unripe cantaloupe.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. Overall not bad but pales a bit in comparison to the other upright offeringd I have enjoyed so much. This has potential, I am just not completely sold on this particular batch/bottle I opened.
