One of many treats from Matt Cole's trip to SD no doubt
Fat Heads Bonehead Red Rye – 8.2%ABV
A: Pours a deep caramel amber color equipped with a thin khaki tan head and some tracked lacing.
S: Has a caramel malted sweetness to the nose. Not a whole lot of aroma going on otherwise. Hard to pick up some faint floral hops. Mostly caramelized malts though.
T: Very smooth and slightly sweet toasty toffee malt base. Nice hoppy citrus and floral notes. Soft bitterness with a backend pucker contributed to some decent dry hop here. Rye is not so much in the way of spice but seems to be doing great things for the mouthfeel. Very smooth and well balanced at 8.2% ABV. Alcohol is barely detectable. Really well constructed and quite enjoyable.
M: A Medium to heavier bodied ale that is contradicted by a very smooth and creamy texture. Real light and frothy across the palate. Slight dry and lighter lift in the finish.
D: Traditional Amber flavors with the use of some toastier Crystal malts. But with some nice late hop adds and the Rye providing a little something extra. Not much in the way of aroma here but great mouthfeel and great balance of flavors.
Would recommend.
