On tap @ Fat Heads. Served in a 16oz pint glass.
Described as "Ruby red in color with a smooth maltiness. Imported English malts give this brew its color and toasted malt flavors."
6.1% ABV, 29 IBU
Despite the description on the menu, this is more of a dark copper color than a ruby red. Hints of orange and gold around the edges. The head is just a white film on-top but is easily re-awakened. There's good retention and lace. The beer is clear with little noticeable active carbonation.
The nose lets me know that this isn't going to be a terribly complex beer. It's a malt bomb, with caramel and sweet sugary malt making up much of the profile. There's a bit of toast, lending some bready notes and depth to the nose. Not terribly expressive, but pleasant if you like malty beers. The hops are buried beneath all this malt.
The taste is defined by more maltiness. The beer is very smooth and sweet without becoming cloying. The caramelized malt has just a hint of toast giving it depth. There are little to no hops, just a touch of balancing bitterness in the middle of the tasting experience. The aftertaste is characterized by a sweet kiss of sugary malt.
The mouthfeel is pleasant. There's a decent amount of carbonation and a medium body. The drinks lighter than its 6.1%. The finish is sweet with a touch of a watery drop-off that has to hurt the score. If you like malty beers and don't dig hoppy bitterness, Fat Heads has an Autumn seasonal for you!
