Served on nitro-tap at Ashley's, Westland, MI. Belgian beer fest 2013

Appearance- Served in a troubadour Belgian-style flute glass. Cloudy dark amber with a big creamy nitro head. Looks very picturesque. No doubt the nitro helps out the look.

Smell- Faint aromas overall. I don't know if the narrow glass stunts my ability to get a good nose, but it doesn't smell too strong at all. Smells good though. Pungent sour apple, grapes, oak, a bit of coffee, black licorice, and finishes with some earthy yeast. Complex.

Taste- Sour bite followed by strong prunes and caramel. Faint citrus notes rounded out with big, robust coffee and roasty grain. Nutty but starchy chestnut notes as well. Very straightforward. A good complex Belgian.

Mouthfeel- Nitro-aided smoothness with some faint bubbles that coat the mouth and allow the flavors to linger. Nothing unique, but good.

Overall- Belgians aren't my favorite, but I would drink this again. Very drinkable for a "dark" style Belgian. Lets hope it pairs well with some mussels!

Cheers.

a belgian stout? this has to be my first.... but my bottle looks different and the abv says 9%....
pours an intersting radiating dark brown; almost can see through the edges, but not quite. hence the 'radiating' description.
smells very dark fruit-y, almost like a thick, nasty, bitter something, but let's see....
so this is a belgian stout. confusing first taste. stout-like, yet dark fruit-like also. almost as if them belgians cant seem to lose the dark fruit in any of their brews. but hey! to each their own, right?
captivating. the high abv makes it worth journeying further. a slight chalky grittiness reminding me it's a stout style. a hard dark fruit malt-iness that reminds me of other, long ago tried brews.... worth a try. like i said, my first belgian stout. never considered it before.
