the best part of this beer is the way it looks in the glass. nice brown body with some amber highlights around the edges. three fingers of big loosly packed bubbles slowly dies down to just a cap leaving some spotty lacing behind. the nose was enjoyable with big roasted nuttyness to it. some hints of coffee and malt. now is where it goes down hill for me. the taste was less than desirable. had a slight sourness to it, don't know if it was an old bottle or just the way the citra hops and coffee and nuts melded together, either way i didn't like it. mouthfeel was way thin, even for a brown ale. carbonation was good but the finish was a cold coffee sour bitter mess.

A: The beer is very dark brown (close to being jet black) in color. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that gradually died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface, a thin collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of roasted coffee beans are present in the nose along with notes of notes hops; the smell of citrus becomes a little weaker as the beer warms up.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has some notes of chocolate malts along hints of roasted malts and a very slight amount of hop bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: Using citra hops in a brown ale might seem like a far-fetched idea, but the citrusy aromas and flavors don't over power the beer so it still tastes like a brown ale with some unique complexities.

A 50ml bottle is split between two pint glasses.

This is an opaque dark brown beer with a large brown head. As the head settles lots of good lacing is left behind. Also visible is a lot of clinging carbonation.

As you would expect, the aroma is full of citra hops.

The beer also has a big citrusy hop flavor. The British malts provide an earthy base, btu really, this is all about the hops.

It has an average body and good carbonation. A small coat retains plenty hop flavor.

This is an interesting beer. I've never had a brown that was this hoppy. Personally, when it comes to hoppy non-IPA beers, I tend to stick with hoppy reds and ambers, but now I've discovered the wonder of hoppy browns. I hope I can find more.

Pours a dark brown with a one-finger head into my glass. Lots of lacing decorates the edges. Otherwise, it most certainly is a brown ale.

Nutty with a hint of cocoa and mildly citrusy hops in the nose. Not your usual brown ale here. Doesn't err too far from the british style though.

Interesting mish-mash of flavors. A hoppier brown ale if you will. Citrusy hops do clash a bit with the malt selection. Unconventional.

Lingering citrus hops and nutty malt dominate the back of the throat. I'm not sure why they felt the need to use citra.

Not bad. Reminds me of a black ale and I do wonder if the hops would work better that way rather than in a brown ale. Still, worth a shot if you call yourself a hop-head.

Pours amber with a fading head. Nose shows lots of sweet malt and tropical fruit confectionery. Very sweet smelling. Some resinous notes too. The sweetness follows as a flavour, both in the copious crystal malt notes and as tropical fruit characters. Some pine shows too, followed by a bitterness that plays second fiddle to the malt. Body feels a bit thick, while the carbonation could be higher to cut through the sweetness. A very drinkable IPA.

A - Pours a dark, murky brown with a tan two finger head. Great lacing.

S - Very hoppy... Citrus & bready malts.

T - Definitely can't hide the brown ale. Lots of hoppiness & citrus along with light roasted malts.

M - Medium bodied & medium carbonation. Dry feel & pretty refreshing.

O - Mixing beer styles can be iffy. This is a great mix.

Picked up a bottle while on a beerventure with BPK59. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Well, this is a treat. Pours a nice dark dark brown. I know the liquid is clear, but, its so dark theres no light passing through. A good 2 finger off mocha head rests atop it that fades to leave TONS of sticky side lacing.

S - Nice soft brown ale notes here, light bready roasted malts and then whamo, citra hops. I dig this.

T - As I raise my glass to my lips I keep thinking "dont be bad, dont be bad" and well, its really not. There are more of those nice slightly sweet roasty bready almost meaty malts with that good smooth bitter fruity faintly tropical hops. Its almost, not quite but almost, a "brown" black ale. Pretty cool.

M - Mouthfeel is spot on here. Great carbonation. Not too creamy, not too sharp. Really allows the hop and malt aspects to come through.

O - This was very fun. I tend to forget about Beer Here, and this beer has chastised me for doing so. Job well done!

On the name alone, I thought this was going to be an ipa. Definitely not though lol

Pours a nice deep brown with a creamy beige head leaving nice lace and good retention. Citrus and pine are there with some tropical notes, but you can't hide that this is still a brown ale. Plenty of nutty, almost sugary notes with some roast and bakers chocolate. Taste has a nice bitterness to it, with piny hop notes. Chocolate and sweet nuttiness and caramel. It has a pretty good feel, somewhat light, carbonation isn't too heavy.

All in all, it's pretty good. Nice brown ale qualities with some nice, albeit somewhat subtle, ipa notes.

Picked this up at the beer store at the De Molen Brewery. Dark mahogany pour with two finger off-white head with decent retention and great lacing. Earthy, toasty, malty, citric nose with hints of dark bread, toffee, chocolate, orange rind, candy sugar, and pineapple. The taste follows suit with lots of bitter, piney, citrus hops, nicely balanced with a solid caramel malt backbone. Loads of sweet brown bread with hints of blood orange, grapefruit, toffee, and tobacco. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy with a heavy, bitter finish. A very unique, hoppy interpretation of a brown ale and I'm not sure it works. Not a bad beer, but not one I'm likely to have again...

The colour is dark red-brown (50 EBC), the liquid is clear. The four finger firm compact head is pale brown. It sinks very slowly leaving some lacing.

The smell is hoppy and citric. Some sweet bready roasted flavours. Lots of candy-like bitterness. Hints of beef stock, gooseberries and toffee.

The taste is quite dry. Lots of bitter-tart citric (lemon) flavours. Chocolate and hints of fruit candy. Some nuts and toasted bread in the background. Light to medium body. The aftertaste brings growing bitter and alcoholic flavours. The finish is all bitterness and alcohol, reminding of a DIPA.

The carbonation is quite strong. The small bubbles are fresh. The liquid is a little thick and dry.

A little unbalanced and too much alcohol. The finish borders on being astringent.

A: Pour is very dark brown, with a large tan head, not very compact but creamy. Dissipation leaves lots of lacings.

S: American hops galore, both floral and bitter; pine and citrus - pineapple, grapefruit and lemon sezt. The malt is surprisingly held back.

T: Tastes of dark bread, roasted malt, semi-sweet. Lots of American hops, mainly floral; grapefruit, pineapple and lemon sezt.

M: Aftertaste is rather long, and quite bitter and dry. Body is medium as well is the carbonation. Smooth.

O: Not as much a American Brown Ale as I would expect; it's more like an dark American Pale Ale (if that's possible).

Robust deep mahogany. Bright ruby tinge when held to light. Fluffy lightly tanned head last and lasts.

Seriously good mint leaf and floral aroma. Light honey malt fills the cracks and rounds out the nose nicely. Dark malt hardly make n appearance.

Bitterness hits at just the right level. Considerable without being overwhelming. Hops are absolutely full on but handled nicely by the malt. Finishes with mx of mint (I get that from citra) and a bit of coffee to let you know it's not an ipa (in case you can't see it).

Only criticism I can give is that it's just a bit heavy. But for a 7% beer that's not really a bad thing. Another comment I have is I don't care who calls this a brown ale, it's a black ipa and a damn good one.

500mL bottle thanks to Chris@Slowbeer. Into a Lost Abbey tulip.

Dark bronze with a towering sudsy tan head. Retention and lacing are great.

Tropical and sweet citrus. Pineapple, tangerine and melons. Coffee is relatively mild, but gives the hops a nice sharp pungent edge. Some caramel and toasted malts tieing it together. Very nice.

Much more pronounced coffee notes. The coffee character is quite refined, with an appealing roastiness and body that in conjunction with the malt lends an almost syrupy character to the hops. Variable flavours with each sip, at times subtle, at times punchy. Good stuff

Medium bodied. Just a touch scratchy in the mouth. I want to attribute this to the coffee but not sure if that's fair. Nice mild lingering bitterness.

I think the use of coffee in IPAs has legs. This is the second I've tried after Seedy Goat which was very nice also. Perhaps a flood of dodgy examples will hit the market and change my mind.

The brew is clouded brown with a red hue, a deep tan head with some lacing and curtains.

The smell is herbal, lemon, grass, spices, herbs.

The taste starts with hard bread, the quite much peel; grape-fruit and lemon.

Medium high carbonation, a soft foamy feeling with a good body, a sharp dry bitter finish.

Slightly unbalanced to the bitter side, but lots of good things as well.
