Liquid is black as night, and the head is a creamy, bubbly, tightly-wrapped tan thing...almost looks like mocha-toffee ice cream. Big tan blurbs of lace on the glass.

Aroma is next to godliness. Dark coffee, bittersweet chocolate, toffee, dark wheat bread, smoke, spices that are tough to identify but clearly at work...all mingled together in perfect measure.

This beer captures the pumpernickel vibe well enough...lays heavy on the chocolate (in a good way), and the hops lend their uniquely bitter twist to the overall taste. All found in the aroma is here on the tongue, although the spices could have been slightly louder. Smokiness and the sourness of plum lay extra layers into the taste. Bitter mineral finish, which does not mask the more savory elements of the taste that also linger a good while.

Super smooth and velvety, although not what I would call creamy. Largely because the body isn't a heavy one, but this texture comes with a terrific caress that does not leave me wanting. In fact, it's the most pleasurable aspect of this beer.

This is hardly a news flash, but Scandinavia is the place of beer renaissance right now...taking styles which the Americans have mutated and amplified from their English and Belgian origins, turning it all around and putting their own twist on it. And Beer Here -- aside from finally offering us U.S. Scandi-beer fans a brewery name we can pronounce -- have added themselves to the list of greats with this one.

500ml bottle into a pint glass. no bottling date.

Pours a very dark brown, close to black color with a milky inch thick beige head. Very attractive appearance. Off rye aromas on the scent, but not much there honestly. taste is where this one hits home...AMAZINGLY smooth and drinkable. chocolate up front , sweet chocolate not dark, rye in the back, not overpowering but its there. extremely good on the palate. wow im in love. creamy and smooth, no alcohol at all. so easy to drink.

overall im thoroughly impressed and say this one borders on world class. its a desert, a real treat. the bottle artwork is what drew me to this one and im so happy i bought it. amazing beer.

A flawless looking beer. Deep, dark brown with a creamy, light tan head that pour big but settles as a nice and creamy one finger head. Lacing is there. Drinking it still leaves a thin creamy head.

Smells nice and interesting. A chocolate forward beer. Nutty, a little 'earthy'. And off the smell this seems to be a reasonably sweet beer. It is slightly different though, I am sure this is the rye. I never really had a rye beer but I can get a form of spiciness most people speak about with rye. This beer has invited me to try more rye beers.

A very very pleasant beer. Nice and balanced. Sweet, chocolaty, caramel, a little spicey and a light roastiness.
No distinct hop aroma's but this beer is nearly three years old, probably the oldest beer I've had by far.

Overall a delicious brew. I don't know about ryebread (pumpernickel), I never eat that (I will seek it out now thanks to this beer), but Dutch ryebread is very different anyway.

Mouthfeel, by the way, is nice and creamy. Medium I'd say with low carbonation.

If you can still find this beer, seek it out as it is good.

EDIT:

As it warms up the spices come out more. Giving it a slight liquorice aroma, added to the ones I mentioned earlier. Good stuff!

No bottle date that I could find. Pretty fresh.

A: Pours a very dark brown with a big, dense medium brown head. Head fades away very slowly - amazing head retention. Thick, almost solid walls of lacing.

S: Lots of smoke and rye. Quite spicy with the rye in fact. Decent roasted malt with char and a touch of chocolate. Decent impersonation of burnt pumpernickel bread.

T: Some char with hints of sweet chocolate up front. Lots of rye. Has sweet caramel backing it all up. Some smoke as it heads towards the middle with some more spicy rye. Smoke is a little more acrid here in the finish, standing mostly alone with just hints of rye. Drying smoky finish.

M: Medium bodied, smooth and creamy. A touch dry from the acrid smoke in the finish.

O: Rye is a nice addition to a pretty traditional porter. A little too smoky for my tastes though it isn't overpowering. Just kinda masks the spiciness that I was really looking for. Mouthfeel is good, nice and creamy and slick. Overall quite a good and easy-drinking porter.

I didn't taste any pumpernickle whatsoever, but this was one of most balanced, tasty porters i've ever had. Nice and chocolately, great mouthfeel, not too thick, not too thin, hints of coffee. Just a really great choice if you are in the mood for a porter.

A - Nice and thick, dark and viscous, and with a 1/2 inch of cocoa colored head/

S - Has a weird boozy aspect to the smell which I assume is pumpernickel, mild roasts, and maybe some chocolate. The pumpernickel smells rather spicy.

T - Taste of a well balanced porter. Slightly chalky mostly balanced roast sweetness. Not getting much pumpernickel but it still taste balanced and delicious.

M - Medium bodied, chewy, and creamy. Good porter.

Overall I got this for 5 bucks and even though its no different than most Baltic porters it drinks world class.

Thanks to barzigkin for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a black color with a tan head. The aroma has a lot of chocolate and roasted malt in it, as expected. The flavor is a bit different. There are still a lot of porter qualities such as the chocolate and roasted malt, but there is also a spiciness and a pumpernickel character which goes very well. The alcohol is definitely noticeable. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle from West Lakeview Liquors
No bottled on date
Poured into a tulip glass

Enjoyed shortly after the Ølfabrikken Porter, and on that side-by-side comparison, I didn't think Mørke was as good a beer. On its own, it features solid roasted, chocolate, and dark bread notes, but lacks the actual pumpernickel components it purports to have. Also, compared to the Ølfabrikken, it was not as robust with flavor, which I enjoy. Still, one I'd revisit if I found a fresh bottle.

Pours a 2cm head of small to medium-sized bubbles, which has above average retention as it descends over a few minutes, leaving modest lacing along the sides of the glass. Eventually, head settles to a thin cap atop the body. Drink itself is dark brown or black in color that allows no light to pass through it.

Aroma is not as strong as expected, with some modest roasted malt, chocolate, and caramelized sugar sweetness. Not detecting pumpernickel bread or the spices mentioned, which is a bit disappointing.

Taste has roasted malt and milk chocolate tones, alongside some caramelized sugar and mild dark fruit sweetness from the malt and yeast esters. Good, but not great; not as robust as I'd expect a baltic porter to be.

Beer's body has medium levels of carbonation with a medium weight; not watery around the edges at all. Resultant mouthfeel is fairly smooth and creamy, with a semi-dry finish and just a bit of stickiness from sugars. No ethanol detected.
