Style | ABV
American Amber / Red Ale |  6.10% ABV

Availability: Year-round. can (41), bottle (5), on-tap (4)

Notes:
Native Amber is an audacious blend of hops and malt. Caramel and biscuit notes carry the Cascade and Cluster hop additions through to an enjoyably round finish. The malt complexity proves rich and the dry-hopped character is invigorating.

Pours a clear copper color, with a thin creamy off-white head. Smells strongly of raisins and grapefruit rind. Taste is a sharp citrus up front, with a biscuity malt middle, and a zesty earthy, toffee, and citrus finish. Very nice bitterness levels match up with the malt perfectly. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, low carbonation. Good drinkability. I will certainly get this again. A very good example of an Amber Ale.

A: Deep reddish/brownish copper hue with a huge, bready, thick, tan-colored head and fairly fantastic lacing

S: Light citrus hops with a subtle bready malt base--toasty with some subtle toffee notes; pretty subtle but pleasant

T: Great balance of a piney, grassy bitterness with a chalky roastiness; the sweet bready malts and bitter grassy hops play well off each other

F: A creamy full bodied, chewy beer

O: This is one of my favorite ambers--just a solid everyday beer

16 oz can courtesy of Bradley R. Thanks pal!

Pours an opaque, dark and somewhat dull amber with a finger of slowly settling cream-colored head. Sticky lacing remains clinging to the glass. Aroma is malty up front, caramel sweet, with a light toasty aspect, followed by some citrusy, resinous hop notes. Overall fairly subdued in the nose - it's not exactly what you'd call deeply aromatic.

This beer tastes like it's a lot bigger than it is; there's a much more assertive hop bitterness in the flavor, again citrusy and with piney resin notes, and there's a distinct booziness that fools you into thinking this is more in the 9% area than the 6% it actually is. Lots of full-bodied malt flavor, with caramel and toastiness, but the sweetness is very much held at bay by the ample bitterness. Moderately lingering aftertaste has a vaguely aspirin-like quality.

Medium-full bodied, with moderate carbonation.

Pretty decent, but not exactly easy drinking. Ideally this would have a little more overall sweetness and hop character rather than simply a whole lot of that aspirin bitterness. The hints of toasty bread and pine are both subtle and appealing notes in both the aroma and the taste but unfortunately they're stomped on a bit, robbing the beer of added complexity. Glad I got to try this but to be perfectly honest I wouldn't be running out for more if this was available in the northeast.

Picked up a 4 pack in 16oz. Cans. The first brewer I know of that all I saw were cans.
Pours a nice, deep amber. Small one inch tan head. Minimum lace but did leave a glass ring.
Aroma is mostly hop with a Bread like back note.
Taste is of an up front hop that carries over to the mouthfeel and lingers. Malts round out the finish and smooth out the crispness.
Overall a good drinkable brew if you got a taste for an assertive flavored beer. Goes well with a burger or steak. Best part, no can taste, good job.

The CANQuest (TM) is back in high gear following an extended hiatus at the end of the school year. tone77 gives me too much credit for this one as these CANs were presented to me by Coop's brewer during SAVOR in DC with a promise of more to follow. Our thanks to any and all CANtributors!

From the CAN: "We like to believe that Native Amber is a perfect blend of hops and malt. Caramel and biscuit notes carry the Cascade and Cluster hop additions through to a wonderfully round finish. Native Amber is both rich, and easy on the palette [sic]. We offer you Native Amber in a [CAN] so that you may explore the world, seeking out new and exciting adventures all while protecting our planet. Cheers!"; "From the Earth"; "Made in Oklahoma City"; "OK + COOP = AWESOME"; "100% wind powered".

The Crack & Glug evinced yet another brimful CAN and produced just under two fingers of dense, tawny head with good retention. Color was more of a coppery-amber than the standard orangish-amber and with NE-quality clarity. The biscuit malt was the star on the nose, underlain with a minty hoppiness. Mouthfeel had a pleasant softness to it and the taste was like a Girl Scout Thin Mint! No, really, the malts gave it a taste like chocolate animal crackers and the hops came through with a light mintiness. Finish was semi-dry and I was beginning to think about what to do with that last CAN. I think that I should trade it so as to spread the love and wealth, but it also occurs to me to Bogart it. I remember hearing at one point that Ambers, as a style, were dead and I was dubious then and grateful now that they are still going strong.
