Stopped in here on the way out of Charleston to see if the hype was justified. I'm happy to report that it nearly is. Here we go:
Farringdon Bistropub is an attractive, multiple story pub in an old home that really has no business existing where it does. We almost drove past it in the dark, but the welcome lights on the big sign out front showed us that, yes indeed, we had arrived. Adequate parking in a gravel lot, but I can see it getting crowded on busy days.
Once you get inside, you'll find a spacious, well decorated and slightly Southern-Posh house, sporting both a 12+ seat wooden bar with an adequate liquor selection and a short and sweet beer list. There is an outside patio with a gazebo that supports multiple taps, picnic benches, a big grill, and, glory be! cornhole boards. Yes, you can drink your favorite brew and toss beanbags towards holes in boards. It's a lot more fun than it sounds.
Now, what you and I really care about is the beer, and I'm happy to report that Farringdon's has a very good, hand-picked selection. Moylans, Stone, Allagash, Duvel, Founders, Victory, Southern Tier, Ballast Point (more on this later), the almighty Coast and more grace their lineup. Little gems like Ten Fidy, Celebrator and Chouffe peek out in the bottle list. Aside from the BMC selections, there is almost nothing on the list that I wouldn't happily drink. The bottle list isn't huge, but it's quite high-end, and the prices are decent. I didn't get to try any draft beer, but was pleasantly surprised to find Ballast Point El Dorado in bottles and my friend snapped up a bomber - delicious.
The service was spot on. Our barkeep (Duffy) was friendly, courterous and quick, and anyplace you can sit and kill a growler of beer with the owner (Stefan) is okay in my book.
I nibbled on some food - the wings - which were huge and hot but not quite as good as DD. Peckers. My buddy liked his burger. Clearly more research is required here, but the menu certainly looked solid.
The bottom line is, South Carolina desperately needs places like this to drag our beer scene up to the standards of towns like Asheville and Atlanta. This is a large, well-kept, friendly bar run by beer geeks who bend over backwards to serve their demanding patrons. Mark my words, if this place weathers the first few tough years, it has potential to become an institution. We've been clamoring for places like this for years, and if you live in the state you owe yourself a trip to Farringdon.

I made it out here finally for the BA meetup in SC. It's in an old house, that's kind of hard to spot, but there's enough parking around it. There's outside seating and inside seating, with a bar for both. I didn't spend much time inside, only really a visit to the restroom. But it seemed nice and laid back. The beer and food are really great. This place hasn't been around long enough to get a reputation, but they keep a good stock of beer, with pretty great variety as fat as bottles go and quite a few decent drafts (there was FBS, COAST Boy King, and a few others when I showed up). The service was decent, the waitstaff was pleasant and nice, and I suppose we were a bit demanding. The food was really great - I don't know if what we had was an everyday thing, but I had a BBQ plate that was really amazing, with some really good vinegar sauce. And the prices weren't any higher than I expected, but weren't dirt cheap or anything.

We were so happy to have been told about this wonderful bistropub!!! After moving down here from the DC area 2 years ago I have watched SC grow in their beer experiences as the laws start to change.
Farringdon Bistropub is thankfully located about 15 min from our house. It's in an older house which creates a wonderful dinning experience. When we arrived we headed for the bar to have dinner at the bar and find out what the bartenders know. We were handed a four page beer list broken down by style - in this area that equates to beer nirvana.
We were served by Dan and Michelle who were both very knowledgeable and excited about the beer they served. The food menu was amazing. They offer the "not fried" version of some of their appetizers. We had the duck breast and the steak au poivre at Michelle's recommendation and they were to die for!!!! Not to mention that their entrees are all less than $20. The creme brule is also a must.
When in the Charleston area Farrindon's in a MUST GO!!!! It would also serve them well if they had a link in the Charleston section of the beerfly.
Thanks again to Dan and Michelle for their great service and knowledge of their menu - we'll be back soon!

I finally got a chance to make my way up to Summerville and try out this wonderful little bistropub. Let me start by thanking Stefan for the hospitality and for taking time to meet with me and chat about beer. Also need to thank Dan for the invite.
The atmosphere in this place is just great. It is built in an old historical house and the decor reminds me of being in old Charleston. The outdoor seating is a great feature, since SC has so many sunny days. There was plenty of parking and room for a decent crowd.
Quality of food and beer is the highest. The beer list was not huge, but I could probably enjoy everything on it. They try to bring in local foods as much as possible, which is always nice to see.
Service was excellent. The waitress seemed to know what beers they sold and the styles, which is a step up from most restaurants in SC.
The selection was not huge, but Farringdon is a newer establishment. They will be serving beer on draught in the near future. I did like that the beer menu was listed by style. This really reminded me of my old favorite Chicago beer bars. The food menu was also small, but all the dishes sound wonderful.
The food was really much better than the citypaper gave them credit for. I had a chorizo burger, which had chorizo mixed in with the ground beef. This was grilled to perfection and served and topped with blue cheese, tomato, and lettuce. The fresh cut side of fried was also a delight. I had a nice Soudts Double Simcoe to go along with this fine meal. The glasswear was on the right track, but still could be better.
The Farringdon Bistropub was a surprisingly good place to have a bite to eat while sipping on a tasty craft beer. I really have no complaints about this place and think it will only get better. Wait, I do have one complaint... It isn't close to me in Mt Pleasant. I think any craft beer lover should enjoy this eatery and I suggest the BA's stop by when they are in the area.
note... the value is listed as a bit pricey because of the beer. The food is very fair for the quality. The beer prices on the menu are only slightly high to me. However, this is SC and we all have to pay more for good beer. It was still very affordable.

We sought this place out on our last visit to the Charleston area. This appears to be a converted house and apparently was different restaurant before being remodeled for this venture. Nice wrap around porch and what looked like a large outdoor seating area in the back with it's own bar. It was too cold to be outside on our visit. We went on Valentine's night and unfortunately the only way for us to get a table was to have a reservation, which we didn't, so we ate in the bar area. The bar was cozy with around a dozen stools, a couple of small tables for 2 or 3 and one large table. We were a group of six and managed to snag the large table after waiting out a couple of people.
The quality was quite good. It's all bottles, but everything seemed fresh. There were 12oz (and similar sized bottles) and bombers.
Service was actually pretty good for a Valentine's evening. Friendly and reasonably quick. They knew about the beers too, which is great.
Selection was quite good. Although, the only beer available that we couldn't get in GA was Founder's. The menu was broken down by style, which is helpful especially for beer newbies.
We were only able to order from a limited bar menu, but what we had was good. Everyone but me had the chorizo burger, which was quite good and I had the wings. The only real complaint I had was that they were whole wings rather than wing/drumettes that you normally get. They should at least cut the wing tip off. Everyone, including me, was happy with the food.
Prices were pretty reasonable. A bomber of Moylan's Kilt Lifter was $9 and many of the bottles were in the $4-7 range.
Overall, this was a very good place and we will be stopping by again on our next visit to the area.
