my only complaint here is that my glass wasnt bigger! it was a 2012 edition on tap at the tap and handle in fort collins, very cool and rare treat here. its gorgeous in the glass, no shine at all, understated dark coffee colored brew, plenty of head on it, and looking awesome in my 8 oz. wine glass. a nose of the deepest, driest roast, barley bitter at all, and with some raisin and tobacco notes to it as well, maybe unsweetened chocolate too. the flavor is awesome too, i swear there is some wheat malt in here of one persuasion or another, and the raisin thing really develops later on. the booze is majorly well hidden, and it drinks lavishly, luxuriously, and decadently, but it also drinks kind of quick, being so delicious and interesting. i always find myself drinking and seeking barrel aged stouts, but if ever there was a stout to prove that a barrel is sometimes not necessary or even desirable, its this one. i have not had other beers from these guys, but not think i have to. this is lights out. i wonder how much age has improved it, or if it was this good from the get go. i suspect the latter honestly...

500 ml bottle was poured into a snifter.
Appearance: This beer poured a two finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pitch black color with no vision of anything. Mocha lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.
Smell: Burnt molasses, smoke, caramel, toffee, chocolate, roasted coffee, earthy, and some nice warming booze.
Taste: Definitely char forward like the bottle says. The level of char goes well with the other qualities one looks for in a RIS.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, full bodied, low to medium carbonation, and nice warming alcohol.
Overall: Had thus at the EBF and loved it. Now wish I had more bottles to age.

A-Sample from EBF. Pours very dark.
S-I found it to be very peaty in the nose. Some char and ash. Burnt coffee and bitter dark chocolate.
T-More peat. A little bit of leather. Pretty bitter. Dark chocolate and burnt coffee. A strange yeasty flavor. Anise.
M-I didn't even think this was a Stout. It was thin for a beer of this magnitude. I didn't find it to be very boozy either. It needs more body.
O/D-I wasn't a huge fan of this one. The flavors didn't match up well. Oh well it was just a sample.
