A pitch-black bitch on a cold winter's night, this gold medal winner was just what I was looking for tonight. For some reason I have never reviewed this beer even though it's one of my favorites. I've got one now, so here we go...

Dark as night with a shallow mocha head. The nose on this one is enough to make your eyes roll back in your head. The aroma is that of the perfect mixture of pale, toasted and caramel malt. It is truly like no other beer I have experienced. Like a milk chocolate toffee bar formed around sweet caramel malt husks.

The flavors continue the almost erotic imagery from the nose but swirl in a heavenly roastiness, like perfectly French-roasted and pressed coffee beans, only better. This beer is everything it should be with an emphasis on the toasty caramel malt sweetness. Medium-bodied for a stout, the high kiln roasts provide just enough fullness on the tongue.

Brown sugar sweet with a chewy oatmeal presence, this may well be the best sweet stout beer on the planet. How's that for a review? I dig it. If you haven't had this beer yet, stop reading this immediately and go get some. 'Nuff said.

This beer sounded great on the menu, looked great on the pour, and smelled great in the glass. But, the taste fell flat. I was expecting a rich tasting oatmeal stout and what I got was a bit disappointing. The taste was stout but almost like it was water down or missing some complexity. I'm not saying it's a bad beer, but it's not my favorite.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a craft beer glass.

A: Pours a dark black hue with a thick, brown, 3-finger head that slowly dissipates, leaving a great trail, and solid persistent lace.

S: Roasted malt aroma with hints of coffee and chocolate.

T: Creamy smooth roasted malt flavor with a slight sweet toasted flavor. Some coffee and chocolate notes.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Impressive oatmeal stout – top notch.

A: Pours fairly dark with a tall thick head, just the way it should be.

S: No overwhelming aromas, some darker malts and a hint of alcohol from the thick head.

T: Starts creamy and transitions quickly into chocolate and coffee malt flavors. Minimal esters but the variety of dark malts provide plenty of flavor.

M: This is one of the keys to an oatmeal stout and Barney Flats delivers. Creamy but not thick, the slight dryness leaves you wanting more.

O: This style varies widely and the Anderson Valley offering is a good beer. Great for a cold winter night, enough alcohol to stay warm and a nice creamy finish from the first sip to the last.

Deep black color with lots of thick caramel head with good retention.
Grainy aroma with hints of dark chocolate and roasted malts.
Pleasant flavor of roasted malts and lots of mocha, with some earthy hops. Relatively to style it has a mild dry aftertaste with residual notes of oatmeal and roasted malts.
Smooth medium to full body with low carbonation.
Not overly complex but quite assertive on its flavors, specially chocolate and coffee. Very good oatmeal stout.
