Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout poured in to the glass not quite black in color, call it a dark brown. The head was camel in color and would not look out of place on a rootbeer float, fluffy, but firm. The lacing began thick and heavy, leaving a generous coating on the glass.
The smell is toasty with roasted malts, chocolate, dark roasted coffee beans, a bit of grassiness and hint of earthiness.
The taste follows the scent fairly well with the chocolate coming across more as unsweetened cocoa and the addition of hop bittering in the middle and a nicely dry finish.
The flavors balance very well on a medium-heavy body with a lighter carbonation giving it a creamy and smooth mouthfeel.
I found this to be very well crafted. There is nothing over the top here and that may be another of its strengths.
This is my first time trying anything from Anderson Valley. If this is typical of their other products I will have to make more of an effort to track down their other offerings.

This beer sounded great on the menu, looked great on the pour, and smelled great in the glass. But, the taste fell flat. I was expecting a rich tasting oatmeal stout and what I got was a bit disappointing. The taste was stout but almost like it was water down or missing some complexity. I'm not saying it's a bad beer, but it's not my favorite.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a craft beer glass.
A: Pours a dark black hue with a thick, brown, 3-finger head that slowly dissipates, leaving a great trail, and solid persistent lace.
S: Roasted malt aroma with hints of coffee and chocolate.
T: Creamy smooth roasted malt flavor with a slight sweet toasted flavor. Some coffee and chocolate notes.
M: Medium body and medium carbonation.
O: Impressive oatmeal stout – top notch.

A: Pours fairly dark with a tall thick head, just the way it should be.
S: No overwhelming aromas, some darker malts and a hint of alcohol from the thick head.
T: Starts creamy and transitions quickly into chocolate and coffee malt flavors. Minimal esters but the variety of dark malts provide plenty of flavor.
M: This is one of the keys to an oatmeal stout and Barney Flats delivers. Creamy but not thick, the slight dryness leaves you wanting more.
O: This style varies widely and the Anderson Valley offering is a good beer. Great for a cold winter night, enough alcohol to stay warm and a nice creamy finish from the first sip to the last.

Deep black color with lots of thick caramel head with good retention.
Grainy aroma with hints of dark chocolate and roasted malts.
Pleasant flavor of roasted malts and lots of mocha, with some earthy hops. Relatively to style it has a mild dry aftertaste with residual notes of oatmeal and roasted malts.
Smooth medium to full body with low carbonation.
Not overly complex but quite assertive on its flavors, specially chocolate and coffee. Very good oatmeal stout.
