My next keg, good but not awe inspiring. I'm still comparing everything to Edmund Fitzgerald and they are losing. This is clearly a good beer, dark and complex and coffee and intrigue, but I'm left wanting and it is hard to describe why. Slighly shallow.

Appearance: Pours an almost pitch black color with a massive head that indicates problems to come, I fear; good retention, however
Smell: Chocolate, with coffee undertones
Taste: Brown bread and chocolate, with sweetened coffee undertones from start to finish
Mouthfeel: The beer has a watery character, with a lot of fizziness, particularly up front
Overall: Not sure how fresh this bottle is, though I bought it in the late Fall; the beer is not listed on their website, so it may well be retired; not up to the usual standards I expect from this brewery

22 oz. bomber.
A - Pours black with dark brown edges. Dense tan head forms a thick film and leaves descent lacing behind.
S - Roasted marshmallows, coffee, milk chocolate, woody, toasted nuts, molasses, dark fruit, sour dough bread.
T - Sweet roasted malt with dry cocoa underneath. The malt has more of an earthy grain to it than the aroma. Once warmed some dark fruit and sour dough emerges. Finishes dry with and earthy bite at the end.
M - Medium body starts out good but turns thin on the finish.
It packs in alot of flavor for 5.50 ABV. A nice porter with some character.

A deep brown colored beer which pours with very little head, but what foaminess is there is nicely structured. Some spotty lacing. Aroma has a butterscotch upfront smell with some roasted malts and coffee. On the paleete the taste is weak and washed out. There are hints of roasted malts but really are quite light. Mouthfeel as stated is thin and watery. This beer needs alittle help, whether its a bad bottle I don't know. A metallic taste slso dominates this beer both in nose and pallette. I'll mark to try at a latter date.

A: Dark chocolate with dark coppery highlights glisten from the light upon the pour. Midnight black appearance in the glass with a khaki colored spongey cake head that was moderate in retention and good on the lace forming concentric circles down the glass.
S: Dark rich chocolate with a smooth creamer enriched coffee presence. Dark fruit of plums is accompanied by a finish of medium chocolate roast.
T: Substance seems a bit thin upfront bodywise, but packs quite a dark and roasty punch. Dark fruit of juicy plums, raisins and a roasty bitterness. Sweet chocolate alcohol remains after the swallow.
M: The body feels a bit fuller then the initial sip. Medium bodied, dark and roasty on the tongue with a good sense of carbonation. Oily feel with a bittering of licorice and chocolate on the fade.
D: Consumed at 50F provides a roasty experience, though felt a bit thin depth wise. Decent drinkability though nothing that really that would make me consider seconds.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #39 (Apr 2010):
A well-noted move guys--we need more dark spring seasonals. An obvious malt bomb gently wielding only 17 IBUs.
Porter darkness woos us for the first sip, and the head is not shy at all in rising to the task at hand and then sticking around for a while. Sweet cocoa roastiness, hints of cake batter and faint blackberries in the nose. Smooth, with a fluffy crispness that makes you want to take another sip right away; very desirable mouthfeel. Malty, slightly roasty with a mild chocolate flavor, but as the sweetness kicks in, a quick splash of fruitiness jumps in too. Mild hoppiness blends in with the roasted grain to the help keep this beer on an even keel. Finishes mild and roasty, with slowing, drying graininess. A bit of charcoal and spent coffee show a last ditch blast of complexity.
Stands taller that it actually is, so the high level of drinkability comes at somewhat of a surprise--and a good one at that.

A - Dark red if you can see through it, nice lasting head with great lacing.
S - Roasted coffee/chocolate mixed with a larger'ish smell, nothing overbearing.
T - Taste is somewhat medium to light for a porter, has a roasted/chocolate/coffee thing thats not that overbearing, minimal aftertaste that does not last long.
M - Low carbonation medium bodied, kinda think and creamy.
D - Drinks kinda think and low on carbination, not over the top, but has a weird status, pretty easy drinker but I like more taste and cringe.

On tap at Anderson Valley in August 2009. Reviewed from notes.
Pours near black with a light mocha head. Some lacing. Nose brings forward faint hints of chocolate and coffee along with a bit of a buttery toffee. Taste brings a bit more butter, which is quite unpleasant. Coffee and roasted malt cover up a bit, but not enough. Feel is of a moderate body and somewhat dry. Not one of their better offerings.

A - tiny bit of light through center of glass. Tight head leaving some lace.
S - mildly roasted malts with some coffee and chocolate. Not very strong though.
T - generally average. I am barely getting coffee or chocolate. Is there such a thing as an oatmeal porter?
M - creamy, but no tingle.
D - mildness makes it drinkable, but there are better options with deeper flavor.

This porter pours not black but the darkest brown I've ever seen. The thick head tops off this beer with a rich chocolate foam. I can smell just the slightest aroma of hops and some sweet caramel malts. This is a SWEET porter. Some brown sugar and toffee with a little dried fruit. There is some gritty earthy feeling in there as well. The finish is moderate, soft and no bite. The grit hangs out on the back of the tongue where some leather notes show up. It is very drinkable for such a big beer.

This is my first time ive been able to taste some of this breweries beers thanks to my favourite bottleshop,it pours a cherry cola hue with average carbonation that leaves behind a two finger mocha laced head that slowly recedes to leave a layer of frothy lacing all round the glass where the head just was,it has a very roasty malt aroma which dominates along with a fruity hop background thats trying to break through, the mouthfeel is just under medium bodied and nicely carbonated and the taste starts off with that roasty malt hit first followed by some mocha which ends with a very hoppy, bitter finish, overall im glad to have tried this as it is one of the more hoppier porters i have encountered so far and not a bad example of the style.

Pours a very dark chocolate/chestnut brown color with amber edges when held to a light source and a frothy 1.5 finger tan head that slowly fades into a thin ring. Minimal lacing.
Deep roasty aroma with hints of chocolate malt, roasted coffee bean, toffee, caramel, hazelnut and toast.
Overly carbonated up front, biting the tongue followed by a slightly roasty, creamy chocolate malt center and a bitter earthy dry finish. Hints of roasted coffee, toffee, oatmeal, milk chocolate and dry earthy hops. Kind of sweet mid palate with a dry bitter finish.

Upon pouring, it seems pretty heavily carbed for a porter. black with a brown head that bubbled up and dissipated quickly.
weak malty aroma, almost sour.
Very thin, both in flavor and mouthfeel. Not much to it. Not terrible, but I probably won't buy this again.
