We're celebrating #25yearsofbeers by bringing back what made DuClaw great in the first place ... making damn good beer, minus the rules. The year was 1998. We faced a sea of average ales, and cast our reel to catch something better. We said no-thank you to the normal, and the Naked Fish got hooked. Bursting with aromas and flavors - decadent dark chocolate, coffee beans and fresh raspberries, our taste buds were never the same. Now, this OG favorite is taking the place of our #19 in the PastryArchy series. [Note: #19 has been released and is a totally separate beer.] What a good catch.

Paid 3 dollars for the single at the House of 1,000 beers. Been a while since I had an experimental beer and I never have tried a chocolate raspberry ale.

A - Pour is spot on what I expected for a stout, very dense and dark with a 1/4 inch of deep mocha head that settles to a thick lace ring. Pretty.
S - I do smell some actual raspberries buried beneath the roast. Hard to tell if they are artificial but in no way to they smell medicinal. Not much chocolate really it just smells like a raspberry infused stout.
T - Very interesting it flows with cocoa powder, then the raspberries sort of mix with the herbal hops, before finishing with the roast. A sort of hard water flavor is noted but it's not very distracting as I get it from time to time with beer. Not bad.
M - Tart and bitter maybe the roast could be dialed back a bit. It seems somewhat watery for a stout giving it a light to medium body. It's ok I guess.

Overall the whole time I was hoping the roast would take a backseat and the chocolate would enter as it warmed but at least I got the taste of raspberries throughout each sip. Worth a try if you seek an brew original.

On tap at blend.

LOOK: dark black with a healthy off white head.
AROMA/TASTE: Coffee chocolate raspberries all prominent in nose and taste.
All good flavors, though not quite right. It seems forced.
FEEL: Flat and thin.

Pours a deep dark mahogany with a coffee colored head.

Smells of chocolate and raspberry with some whole grain bread notes

Taste is bitter chocolate with yeasty bread notes that carry some alcohol presence going into raspberry syrup notes.

12 ounce bottle - $1.99 at Total Wine & More in Greenville, South Carolina.

Appearance: Pours out a very dark brown body given a slim (very slim, actually), light tan head.

Smell: Easy going, ho-hum roast, vague chocolaty hint with some background faux raspberry.

Taste: Moderately roasty, coffee-ish tone with a little bit of sugared sweetness. Scant chocolate. Middling, unremarkable raspberry. Rather anticlimactic. The finish is sweetish trailing out flavors as mild as when they came in.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body, a bit on the thin side. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Lackluster and frankly bit of a letdown. I'd had hopes. Maybe not high hopes, but hopes none the less. Now, I'm a little gun shy for the Double version. 2x zero is still a big, fat zero.

Pours dark black with a little tan head. Notes of Chocolate and raspberry on the nose. the first the that hits you is the raspberry when tasting, then the chocolate kicks in. Nice creaminess as well. Low alcohol content for a stout.

BOD 12/29/15. Pours pitch black. Very good head volume and lacing, outstanding retention.

Outstanding nose of bright raspberry over light chocolate, a bit of roast and a touch of char.

Heavy light body that is smooth with a hint of creaminess. Normal carbonation level with a fairly good balance with the body. Effervescence is mild mid-palate and closes with a nice prickly finish.

The flavor profile is good, but lacks intensity. It begins with a subtle coffee that flows into a light roast in the middle. Chocolate hints at being present, but you have to search for it. Raspberry makes a light appearance as the finish approaches. The finish is a slow fade of light coffee.

I'm looking for a bottle date and I don't see one.

Appearance: There's a short but nicely formed light tan head under a black body. It's not an impressive beer to look at but it wouldn't be the worst.

Aroma: I get a bit of fruity aroma that smells a bit like raspberries. I nearly buried my nose trying to extract any more aroma.

Taste: I get a nice cherry flavor that tastes very much like a cherry liqueur. I don't know if this contains artificial flavors or not but it has an odd aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: It has this sickening souring back-taste which really hampers drinkability. Not much going for this as far as mouthfeel.

Overall: It has an odd cherry flavor to the beer. If you can get over that then you are left with an average tasting beer. You might find a person who can't discern the flavors of the beer and would enjoy it. I personally did not.
