Richards is my local spot to buy beer. Not the best place for selection of microbrews or craft beers, but I hate to knock it because it is all we have. If you like 30 packs of Bud or Bud light Richards will be a great place for you. Luckily I travel for a living so I can use Beer Advocate (Beer Fly) to discover some great places across the Northeast to find good beer selections. Plattsburgh locals should take note that Winooski Beverage Warehouse in VT (reviewed here) is the best place nearby to find a great range of choices. I like craft beers and more specifically DFH 60 & 90 minute IPA's; I asked Richards to carry it and they did bring it in at a decent price. It is best to ask for Dave, and he is pretty good in getting something in for you. For Plattsburgh Richards is ok.

Props to Derek @ Richard's Grocery, who took my phone call from across the lake and set aside some choice picks for me until I could get there on the weekend (the fresh Heady Topper I brought for you and Richard was well deserved).
Why may you ask are my ratings so high on this store? Does the word OASIS have any meaning?? Plattsburgh was once a booming business community that was hit hard by the closing of the Air Force base, and anyone who lives in the "North Country" that appreciates quality beer owes Richard a debt of gratitude for making a damn impressive selection available in such a tiny space, and yes, the store is also his house!
Nobody for many miles around in that particular part of upstate New York can match the selection, and they are very nice folks to deal with. I rate the service a 5 because of how I was treated, however their ability to tell you details about each individual product may fall short if guidance is what you are looking for, but I already knew what I wanted to grab and eyeballed some other finds for the next trip.
Richard shared his experience of buying pricey high end beers that he was skeptical of and discovered he wished he had bought 10 times the amount by how it sold. Support this North Country Beer Oasis!

I just got back from this place and I could not be more impressed. Previous reviewers talk about Long Trail and Saranac, but you can find that In Peice Choppers. When I was there, they had a very large selection of Founders, Green Flash, Stone, Rogue, Alesmith, Ommegang, and much much more, at very reasonable prices. I picked up a 4 pack of Founders Breakfast Stout for 11$. They won't let you break up a sixer, but they have plenty bombers available. For Montrealers, this is a must, they have everything we read about but can't find in Quebec

Richard’s Grocery is a weird place in a residential neighbour. A really small mart with a good variety of beer…for Plattsburgh. Saranac, Redhook, LongTrail, Smuttynose, Brooklyn, Dogfish, Goose Island and few rarities from others states. A good place in North New York State for craft beers if you don’t want to go to Burlington. Sometimes, unfortunately, you can only find 12 packs for some variety. The prices are very very low (for example, 3.99 for a 6pack of Goose Island Harvest Ale). Not far from the Interstate 87.

You dont go to Richards for the friendly service, although they are nice people, or for the great bait and takle vibe, or the poor selection of salty snacks. You go to Richards for the beer. They have the best selection in Plattsburgh. Not only is the selection the best, its by far the least expensive. We recently purchased a Saranac beers of winter CASE for $20! Every beer is way less expensive than anywhere else. Granted, some may be expired, but some may also be aged ;)
Bottom line - go to Richards; spend less, drink more.

All I have to say is thank goodness we have Richard's in the Plattsburgh area! It might not look like much, but it is a diamond in the rough. Yes, they have lots of the yellow water, but they have a great selection of 22oz bombers, and 6/12 packs of craft beer. They often unload beer for unbeatable deals, so I go weekly. I have gotten 24 packs of long trail and saranac for under $18 and 12 packs for under $10. I highly recommend this place. I just have to laugh at the fact that it's in someone's house!

Best palce to buy beer in Plattsburgh, not that good compaired to other plaes beer places though. They don't sell kegs which sucks. Everyone calls this place the bait shop becuase that is what it was when it first opened, they stills sell bail but they do most of their buisness selling beer now. Kinda out of the way but worth going to. Have great sales some times and have seen things here that I have not seen anywhere else, but overall their selection is slightly down. Make sure you don;t park infront of a driveway when you go, the locals on that street seem to hate the place, most likly becuase of all the college students going there.

So me and the family took a day trip to Plattsburgh yesterday and just before coming home, i decided to check this place out.
It's in the middle of a residential area and looks like a hole in the wall (inside and out). Very small store, i'd feel claustrophobic working in here.
At first, i was disappointed by the selection as all i could see was macros & craft beer you see everywhere (Magic Hat, Redhook, etc...). But there is a decent selection if you take into account that there's no real craft brews in the area. Disappointed in not seeing Stone but they had some Ommegang, Unibroue, Rochefort & Samuel Smith to name a few. Bought a bomber of Ommegang Witte and a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout.
I had to knock the service score down a bit as they wouldn't let me break apart some six-packs and the bomber selection left a little to be desired :(
All in all, an average place to get a few craft brews when in the area bit don't go out of your way to come here though.

The store looks rough when you pull up, like a local gas station without the pumps. It's in the middle of a neighborhood, to add to the strangeness.
Inside, it was cramped, but the selection surprised me. Next to bombers of Olde English "800" were bottles of Rochefort and Westmalle! They had a large amount of area for beer, given the size of the store.
Decent VT, NY, CA six pack variety, nothing unusual, but solid. Walk-in cooler with cases available, 12 packs, and more six pack selections. Had growlers of locally made Legend's beer inside the walk-in.
Service wasn't great, but it's not that kind of store, I don't think. The bottom line is this: it seems to be the ONLY store in Plattsburgh to buy any good beer. 'Nough said.
