First had: on tap at Brauhaus Schmitz, Philly, PA

Poured a hazy, dark mahogany brown with a nice puff of off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts and dark dried fruit, with some musk, and a hint of earthy hops. Rich and flavorful, with tastes of sweet caramel malts, raisins and Fig Newtons, fresh hops, earthy, with a slight sensation of apple peel. Finishes nice and dry. Medium mouthfeel, and quite a pleasant drink.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer is a dark hazy brown with a half a finger of tan colored soapy head that quickly dissipated to a thin collar at the edge. Little to no lacing as the head slides right down the glass. Very cloudy with some floating particles visible.

Nose is dark fruits, plums and raisins, caramel and malt sweetness. A touch of rum like booze comes up as the beer warms to room temperature.

A little nicer on the tongue, more dark fruits, raisins, plums and figs, slight wine like character with tannin astringency, caramel sweetness, baked bread, and lightly toasted malt. A little herbal hop bitterness on the finish. Similar to a complex Belgian strong dark ale.

Medium bodied with a fine but soft carbonation.

Body is very dark, with a foamy tan head that lasts with good retention. Lots of sticky lacing.

Smells of dark malt and dark fruit. Very enticing aroma.

Tastes of sweet dark malt, dark fruits, and coffee, with a sour twist. Very nice malt taste.

Body is medium and mild carbonation gives this a lively mouthfeel.

This is a delectable dark altbier, one that really makes the German style shine.

Pours a hazy dark nut brown. Minimal head.

Smells of dark fruits and caramel. The fruitiness tends toward the pungent, borderline sour as opposed to sweet.

Tastes malty and of dark fruits and a bit of molasses, not unlike some Belgian dubbels, but with an added hop bitterness and smokey and nutty elements.

Feels full and somewhat viscous with a very mild sting of carbonation.

Interesting and unique beer here, my first alt so I don't know what to make of it. The smokey elements balance the pungent fruit and malts, so overall I'm enjoying it. Hides its strength pretty well. I will need more time to consider this but for now I say it's pretty good but not for everyone.

This caught my eye because the unique bottle they have. This beer pours out as a deep brown color with a minimal head on it. The smell of the beer has some rich malts on the nose, there's also a light roasted smell to the beer. The taste has a nice sweet flavor, with a malty dry aftertaste. The mouthfeel is a little thick which is kind of nice. Overall I found this beer to be interesting, I'd like to try this one again sometime.

Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle into a Unibroue tulip.

A: Pours a dark mahogany with one-half finger of pale tan head. Good retention and lace.

S: Ample bouquet of roses, brandied dark fruits and sweet malt. Intense but not overwhelming.

T: Sweet lavender and cinnamon up front, transforming to stewed fruits, honey and spicecake. Alcohol tries to poke through but can't disentangle itself from the complete flavor package. The flavors are broad and deep, and exceptionally satisfying. The sweetness is substantial, but the spiceness prevents it from even approaching the point of being cloying.

M: Medium heavy mouthfeel, very, very smooth gliding across the tongue.

O: This is an absolutely delicious beer, and words can barely do it justice. Find it, drink it, be grateful to be alive. As their Web site says, it is 'the delicious droplet.'

I do not know how this can fit the classification of Altbier, as this is clearly a whole different animal. I would guess it must be a Doppelbock, but even then it is way skewed from the norm. As I do my research, it appears that this is a type of 'Sticke' which is apparently a strong Altbier; additionally, it is a Doppelsticke, which means its a double-extra-strength Altbier, I guess. So, as it turns out, it is its own niche style, truly.

A - It pours a deep chestnut-brown hue with seeming purplish tinges, and is capped with a filmy khaki head. It really looks unusual (nice), especially the color.

S - The nose is very spicy, lending notes of black peppercorn, spruce and juniper, mango sap and tannin, generally musty-earthy hops and a hint of solventy booze.

T - Tastes of rich barley malt and spicy dark fruit, intensely flavored with black peppercorn, amchur, sumac and juniper berry. One of the craziest brews I've had.

M - The feel is nice, but not terribly enhancing.

O - Strange brew; I like it quite a bit.

Poured into a nonic pint glass at TJs during happy hour on 4/22. Reviewed from extensive notes.

The body is a murky brown with a big 2-finger head perched on top. The head dissipates fairly quickly until only 2mm of head remain, and then it sits around forever, leaving lacing in a thick wall at first, and then spreading out to resemble more of a coarse spiderweb.

The complex and deep aroma begins with caramel, then moves to a fruity base, mostly dates, and even a hint of raisin, a surprise, as this didn't look dark enough to have raisin notes before I dove in. Dry cocoa follows, and lead to an unexpected hint of cherry. The German hops come through towards the end to round out and balance the sweet malt (almost barleywine-esque) and fruit with grassy and musty hoppiness.

The flavor just builds on the intensity of the aroma. As they did in the aroma, caramel and dates lead out the flavor onto the palate. Plums and raisins follow, but they are subtle as compared to the dates. Sweetness is balanced by the grassy, earthy, and musty hops that come through nicely towards the back end of the flavor profile. Again, there are touches of dry cocoa, brown sugar sweetness, and that hint of cherry.

Creamy throughout, smooth on the finish, with a chalky dry feeling in the mid-palate. Fine carbonation allows the beer to dance on the tongue while allowing the body of the brew to shine. Easy to drink, and so complex that I can't imagine that I've caught it all, I definitely hope to return to this soon.

Served from bottle into a Mother Earth strange. Poured a massively dark amber with a one finger light tan head. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark fruit, caramel, and sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark fruit, brown sugar, caramel, sweet alcohol, and honey. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty nice brew. It was very well balanced despite having quite a bit going on. The aroma was not very strong but was still quite good after you worked to find it. I would have never guessed that the alcohol was this high on this one as the sweetness aspect of this brew hides it quite well. A definite must try if you have not done so already.

330ml bottle, 2010 bottling. Pours a dark brown with a finger of khaki head.

Nose is sweet and bready, hints of toffee and cocoa, light fruitiness. Initial notes are sweet and light: cherry, molasses, toffee, bread. Followed by a bit of cocoa, earth, nuttiness and toast. Finish is nice and dry, almost roasty, plenty of bite. A hint of booze as well. Slightly thinner body, complex flavor, silky mouthfeel. This is a top notch beer - wish I had gotten a few more. It's a style I don't normally gravitate to but this is a damn fine beer.

Pours dark amber with a thin, tan head. Lacing follows down the glass as I drank.

Very unique flavor. Roasted malts, chocolates and coffee like flavors plus some fruitiness. Very bold flavors, but in a good way. The alcohol comes out a little, but not overwhelming. Every sip tasted slightly different as the temperature changed.

Reminded me a little of an Imperial stout with the complex, robust flavors. Halfway through the glass, I was wishing I had bought more than one!

Sampled on April 30, 2011. There was a code on the label that I simply could not read but I think it had a couple of zeroes in it. It has a gorgeous reddish-mahogany brown pour with a long-lasting, foamy head and seltzer water-like carbonation. The malt aroma is overwhelming. It is sweet like molasses and sharp like licorice. Oh, and did I say it was malty? It really tingles my tongue with its sweet malty, toffee taste and its dry bite stabbing me at the end. I also thought the bottle was kind of neat.

Poors a mahogany brown. Big malty aroma. Roasted, Carmel, toffee, sticky sweetness almost like maple syrup or creme brulee. mouthfeel is rich almost a bit too sweet/cloying. Overall good. Trying to get into the German styles after assaulting my pallet with IPA's and Stouts for years...a good start.

330mL swingtop bottle to stange. Bottled on 10.06, code 11.05. $7.50 for the experience.

A: Audible upon uncapping. The body is a dark mahogany brown with slightly transparent auburn edges. Two and a half fingers of very light brown foamy head is produced and has excellent staying power. Above average lacing.

S: Big toasted malt aromas and faded hops. Caramel, dark brown sugar and toffee dominate. Resin, light leather and must.

T: Dark fruits of prune with underlying plum. Rich, deep malt sweetness can almost bury the alcohol.

M: Very soft carbonation plays up thick chewy character. Tongue coating and mildly cloying, but extending the life of the flavor.

O: Good but not great. I'll probably chose to spend my money elsewhere in the future.

A - dark dark amber/brown. thin head. about 1 finger then settles out

S - w/o putting my nose to it i got baked apple smell...raisins. bit of warm alcohol. cinnamon.

T/M - sweet and biscuity up front. not sweet at all as expected from nose. and surprisingly hop bitterness behind. where did that come from? woah. (ok so apparently i didnt do my research before trying this...basically a double ipa (yes not an ipa...alt)...but german style. now it makes sense). mouthfeel is full and encompassing. not missing weight there. reminds me of a winter warmer actually

O - very very pleasant. smooth. well balanced. more hoppy than i would have thought but def a brew to give a shot. yay germany

Draft. Sampled at Kickbacks. Served in a snifter glass and pours a dark, murky reddish mahagony brown color with a rich tan head. Some lace. I’ve NEVER smelled an Altbier like this! Rich aroma of dark fruit raisin and plum with some caramel notes as well. Medium mouthfeel. Caramel notes off the bat along with the mentioned dark fruit notes. Some roasted flavors creep into the flavor as well. Fairly complex. Booze shows slightly and ends with a lingering bitterness.

11.2oz swing top, slender bottle poured into a white wine glass · bottled 10.06, whatever that means · fridge temp

Appearance: Pours a cloudy brown with red highlights. The head make sits way to an inch tall, light tan in color. The head surface looks like pancake batter as it gets heated in a pan. Not much lacing.

Smell: Rum, raisins, brown sugar, slight alcohol, creme brulee. Loaded with an arsenal of aromatics. Maybe some licorice in there as well.

Taste: Oh, wow. This is spectacular. Excellent brown sugar sweetness is followed by a cherry nib flavor. It is so dense with flavor that it carries that umami (deliciousness) factor. Next there is a hop flavor that really dries out in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Sweet, sticky, medium bodied, bitter and finishes dry. This is mouthfeel perfection. The alcohol is there, but isn't overt.

Drinkability: Again, this beer defines umami. It is so delicious because it covers so many flavor components, and covers them all very well. It is complex, fruity, sweet, bitter and GERMAN. This is the best German beer I have ever had, and it rivals many of the overall beers I have ever had. As close to perfection as it gets.

This is a fine session beer. I would take this over any Pilsner in the world!

It pours a dark, cloudy brown with an off-white head. As you drink, it laces beautifully in a clean glass.

It smells of hops and alcohol.

The flavors are well blended through the aging process. It's strongest flavor is an herbal bitter note at the end. From the beginning a sip brings you bready, yeasty, raisony notes, none dominant.

The mouthfeel is outstanding, substantial and even sticky.

A: Pours a dark brown w/ ruby-red hues around the edge of the glass; head pours a mocha/cream 1 inch head that dissipates quickly, leaving a frothy lacing on the surface that remains

S: Sour first, no doubt from the aging process; sweet notes of raisin; malty, but no roasted notes; definite boozy smell

T: sour and musty up front; gives way to a sweet, dried fruit flavor (raisins, prunes); hints of malt, becomes a roasted malt flavor as the beer warms; alcohol definitely here throughout

M: sticky, makes my lips stick together; a touch of metallic and astringent feel; definite warming notes on the back of the throat from the alcohol; body is medium; almost no carbonation present

O: not my favorite; don't really like the flavor of aged brews, old ales, etc... As this was an aged version of an Altbier (Doppelsticke), it didn't quite do it for me; however, considering the style of beer it is, it was very well done, and remained true to its characteristics

Complex and long brew, full of stimulating nuances.

Presentation: 33 cl custom brown swing top bottle. Small seal label in purple, silver, and red. Quite the iconic and good looking bottle. Notes briefly in German the history and ingredients. Neck label offers a bottling date (10.06?), and shows 8,5% Alc. by Vol. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Deep brown with ruby brown edges. Nice 1" frothy head, medium to low retention with a nice surface memory and nice splashes of lacing.

S - Malty nose, sweet and a bit sour musty sense permeating the nostrils.

T - Complex taste, full of subtleties and rather long. A malty sourness, with sweet touches, faint hoppy dash, complex fruity notes, a hint of mustiness... Soft notes of caramel with notes of raisins, old apples, insinuation of port. Nice subdued hoppy undercurrent providing a caramel coated citric peel in the distance.

M - Medium body, soft carbonation retaining still a nice tingle in the finish, and a rather smooth feel accentuated by the complex flavor and sour note in the finish.

O - Complex and long, quite a delicacy.

Notes: Hmm, high bracket for the style? I have not had many Altbiers but all I've had before this was forgettable. This is on an entirely different league. Nice complex treat!

Pours dark brown with a one finger sand colored head with nice retention and spotty lacing. The aroma has sweet caramel malt, raisins, hops, and alcohol.

The taste is just like the aroma. Sweet caramel malt, raisins, hops, and alcohol. The sweetness of the malt is balanced by the hops, which adds some balance.

Full bodied with moderate carbonation. There is quite a bit of alcohol burn for an 8.50 % abv beer. The aftertaste is both bitter and sweet at the same time. A good beer which was a nice treat to find at Zipp's Liquors.

Bottle picked up at Chevy Chase in DC. Served in a pilsner glass.

Pours yields a deep molasses-colored brew with a good off-white head with good retention. Lacing sticks to the sides of the glass in a spotty fashion. The nose is incredibly rich with dark fruits, molasses, brown sugar, and some caramel. It's nearly a cross between a doppelbock and an eisbock. Really insanely enjoyable. The flavor doesn't back down, presenting a really nice fruity presence along with a touch of booze in the background. Mouthfeel is quite nice, but fails a bit in the finish. Good medium body presents itself well, but there's a bit too much bitterness in the finish, wiping away the beautiful flavor. Really quite drinkable. A solid hit on the best of Germany list.

375ml bottle into DFH shaped pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a billowing dirty cream colored head that slowly faded into a thick greasy film that left chunks of sticky lacing down the glass.
S: Smells of an interesting combination of an old ale and brown ale and a doppelbock lager. I get a touch of honey and raisin or red grapes to the scent as well.
T: Pretty much tastes like an old ale with a touch of lager yeast. I taste chocolate, musty grapes, figs, herbal hops, caramel, and more chocolate. The aftertaste is actually quite bitter, both in a chocolaty way and a hoppy way. There are some hoppy tea like notes as well.
M: Full body with a good heft to the mouthfeel. Carbonation is even and low and the alcohol is present and warm but not distracting.
D: Sweet, fruity and full of chocolate. Not bad, definitely interesting. I'll have to seek out more beers from this style and from this brewery.

This beer first interested me in it's bottle look. The bottle is unique as far as beer bottles go. I then went onto the web and did some research. It turns out (at least I think this is true from what I read) the Doppelsticke is meant for the US only. Despite the bit pricey cost for only 0.33 L/11.2 oz of it I bought it (obviously). I didn't quite know what to expect of this beer and oh...did it surprise me. This has to be one of the more interesting beers I've tasted.

The head was slow forming and enjoyable to observe forming into its frothy and toffee colored self. Color was clear and dark ruby.

The smell was a bit difficult to make out. The smell of alcohol was definite and plum was there too but other than that I couldn't distinguish anything else. My lack of decision or classification can, however, be attributed to the shock I was given at my first sip of this beer!

The taste surprised me a lot with what I conceived of as a plumish spice. A bit of wheat smoothed the beer out after the plum but then came the alcohol taste followed by some malty sweetness. This is a very interesting beer and although it isn't my style it certainly tested my palette and was surprising enough to impress.

So I've never really been much of a German beer drinker. I would always get turned off on trying them because I would always hear people talking about how German beer were the best. I did not want to feel like I was just jumping on the band wagon. Seeing this unique bottle in the store caught my eye. When I saw "Product of Germany" on the label I felt that I needed to pick it up since it wouldn't be my normal beer choice. I mean a brewery thats been making beer since 1862 can't be making bad beer. I also got to mix it up now and then as there are too many beers out their to stick to just a few. So lets get on with it then.

So popping the gasket and puring this thing in a glass leaves me with a nice full glass of a dark amber beer. Not a lot of head forms and the little that does fades away quite quickly. Taking a whiff and does this thing smell nice. There is a very alluring sweet malty smell and I cannot wait to take a sip. Wow, this beer is mighty tasty. This beer is hard for me to describe in terms of flavor. In order to describe it somehow I would have to say this beer is very sweet and malty very much in sync with the smell but a little more complex. The first couple of sips have a nice bitterness to it that quickly fades as you progress though the beer. There is also a sharp finish that is hitting me in the rough of my mouth. The mouth feel is nice as this beer does not have much carbonation to it.

Overall I really like this beer. It has a nice flavor, even if I cannot describe it properly, and is a full bodied beer. I like everything about this beer even down do the funky gasket bottle. I'm definitely going to be picking up another one of these. So this is definitely not my first German beer and definitely not my last. Germans can make a great glass of bubbly brew. My local beer store is selling these for $5.99 a bottle. Pick one up.
