on tap at barleys i was thrilled to be able to try this one instead of buying a bottle.
Poured a nice hazelnut brown, very clear, and with ample carbonation producing a nice two inch white foamy head. This quickly faded leaving behind nothing more then a thin film on top and a decent side glass lace presence. Very nice overall look though and there was definitely an unfiltered presence as the sediment was just well, settling down to the bottom. Aroma was full of wheat as one would expect from it. Lots of earthy and grain like tones that were mixed in with and accented very nicely by a bit of a yeasty presence. The aroma was slightly musty with a touch of a bready like quality, much thicker then I thought it would be.
Very nice here. A very rich full bodies flavor would be the best way to describe it. Normally I find wheat beers to always have the same overall flavor profile, however this one was a step up, and maybe due to the dark wheat. The flavor just seemed to come off as a bit more complex with a lot of earthy and grain like flavors. There was defiantly a lot of yeast and wheat mixed in and I even picked up the presence of some dark fruit like flavors. Overall very pleasing and a very nice palate about it. A nice smokey kind of flavor started to settle in towards the end of the session and almost gave it kind of a smoked presence in the finish. Very clean, but not as crisp as I would have thought. There was defiantly an underlying slickness to it. Some kind of slippery feel that kept it from having that clean cut off you normally get. It wasn't distracting at all, but rather served to prolng the flavor and give it a little more depth. The carbonation seemed to leave quickly and the last few sips did fall a tad bit flat. Very nice. This was light enough to be a consistent drinker without going overboard and boarding on too light. But the flavors were very well pronounced and defiantly left you with a good overall impression. This was defiantly a sessionable ale here and something I would not mind seeing in the fridge for a while.

Sampled on 5-7-11
Pours a deep red/brown color, with a quickly settling head that leaves a ring of white lacing that slowly recedes.
Smell is sweet, strong malt, lots of clove, smoke, and a hint of coffee. Malty banana is in the back, with lots of dark fruit in the finish.
Taste is exactly like the smell, but with an earthy quality that really ties things together. Lots of smoke to help the fruity flavors. The finish is all clove, with a sweet, slightly hoppy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is good, slick and creamy to go with the malty flavors.
Drinkability is also good, the hops add just enough kick to keep the alcohol in check.
Overall, a great example of the style, in a more hardcore, American micro way.

(Served in a dimple mug)
A- This beer pours a dark dense brown body with a billowy off-white head that has a strong sea of carbonation that glides up through the body.
S- The dry hop note gives way to a dark melanoidin nougaty aroma with some soft yeasty note as the beer warms.
T- The wheat bread taste takes on some green plantain earthy yeast qualities and some roasted dark notes that are followed by a fresh bubble gum ester note that remains soft. The finish is a soft bread crust note that is pretty clean with a green hop snap to finish of the taste.
M- The mouthfeel is a medium-light texture with a soft fizz finish. There is no alcohol heat showing up in this beer.
O- This beer has a full dark wheat flavor with soft melanoidin qualities and softer yeast esters that add nice depth and are a bit different than the traditional hefe characters. The black pepper is very well hidden.

The beer pours out deep walnut in color, clear, with a off-white head. The aroma off the beer is malty sweet with rich banana and clove esters prominent. Even though this is a Belgian take on a traditional German beer, New Belgium really nails the traditional German style characteristics. The taste of this beer is sweet up front, but it fades into a roasty chocolate and banana. The black pepper wasn't that strong on the taste. The drink of this beer is exceptionally nice.

A: A dark dark brown that is transparent in the light. The finger-width, brown head gives way after a few minutes
S: A banana scent dominates with some clove and caramel notes in there as well. Smells a lot like NB's Abbey Ale.
T: Tastes like Abbey, too, with the banana taste coming in first. That caramelized sweetness is present as well. There's some extra fruitiness sticking around and the cloves are definitely in there. A tasty, sweet treat.
M: Medium-bodied with an extra carbonation that adds a crispness that lightens it a bit. Not overwhelming in the least. Probably the aspect that differs the most from NB's Abbey.
D: The delicious taste and not overly heavy feel make it very drinkable, maybe too much so for a 9% ABV. You might want to be careful with multiple.

Served from tap into an imperial pint glass. Poured a reddish brown with a one and a half finger very light tan head. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, clove, banana, alcohol, and a slight roastiness. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, clove, slight alcohol, and slight roastiness. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew and a very nice Dunkel. The aroma was quite nice and I really liked the slight alcohol aroma that it was giving off with the typical Hefe notes. The flavor was very nicely balanced and at 9% the alcohol was not palate invasive at all. For the style, this one is top-notch in my opinion. A definite must try.

Bought this beer while i was in NC and brought it back to Florida.
This beer is darker than most Dunkel's i've had (with Weihenstephan's being my main benchmark). Upon first taste i was surprised by just how spiced this beer was. It also has a much stronger malty kick that puts it much closer to being a great winter beer than i would consider most dunkel weiss.
All in all, grab one and share it with a friend.

A: Pours an opaque, dark brown in color with a lovely, thick, frothy head that dissipates as you drink. A thin layer of cream is left atop the beer with plenty of lacing along the sides of the glass. Looks very appealing!
S: Smells predominantly of dark fruits and malts; plum and raisin, mostly. Also a bit of soy sauce and some very faint, pine and citrus hops with a bit of alcohol.
T: Much like the smell, this brew predominantly features a malt and dark fruit characteristic. Maple syrup, raisins and plums hit the tongue first, followed by a caramelized malt syrup with a bit of molasses. The malts and some cinnamon spice linger on the tongue. Not quite what I'm used to in a dunkel, but still very good. The 9% ABV is almost undetectable!
M: This is a medium bodied brew with a pretty thin mouthfeel with a good amount of carbonation. There is a little bit if chewiness and some syrupy qualities to the brew, but it isn't overly dense and goes down smooth and easy.
O: Overall, this is a very tasty and dangerously drinkable dunkelweizen (especially for a 9% ABV)! There is enough complexity here to appreciate a truly crafted beer, but it remains pretty sessionable despite the high ABV. Cheers New Belgium!

Aromas are initially huge with caramelized ripened bananas and waves of bready malts; there is also some with some butterscotch and toffee detectable as the beer warms. There was some sensory memory going on here as well that I couldn't figure out, but this smells almost exactly like Banana Runts (childhood fat kids flashback).
The taste begins opposite with the toffee, butterscotch and milk chocolate maltiness dominating the palate. Upon further examination, the German yeast flavors become much more equal with the sweet dark maltiness. Over-ripened bananas once again take center stage, not too much spice or clove and no alcohol what-so-ever.
Mouthfeel is quite full with adequate carbonation, lesser than the usual style, but the higher than normal ABV is to blame/explain that.
Overall this is freakin' amazing; totally blows any beer in this category away for its full full flavor profile. Given that it is technically an "Imperial Dunkelweizen" in my book (because it's not fair to compare in this category because I have never had one over 6% ABV), this beer should not be compared to it's counterparts. Regardless, wow, I wish I could access this year round and I am not a Weiss, Dunkel or any German beer fan because I usually find them bland but this continues to verify my philosophy that there is no reason to pay for any beer made out of the US because of how advanced/creative the US breweries have become.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a pint glass. Not sure how old this is but I bought it several months ago.
Pours a dark coke like color with a massive tan head which has okay retention. The smell is very sweet and nice lots of sweet yeast esters. The feel is medium to thin good carbonation. The taste is sweet bubble gum, cloves, banana and malts, a very good beer one of the better things from New Belgium, I'd like to see this made again.

Purchased in Berkeley, CA, and brought back to Australia, where I shared it with @LaitueGonflable.
Pours a dark, but rather clear brown colour, with a reddish tinge when held to the light. Head is much lighter in colour than the body, forming only a mild beige crest to the beer. Lacing is exceptionally intricate. When pouring, it looked quite light and fluid, but in reality, in the glass it's quite heavy, and forms some tight static carbonation. Looks pretty great, all up.
Nose is like a mega-wheat beer on steroids. Huge esters of banana, with a genuine punch-to-the-nose aroma of sticky, fresh, heavy cloves. The clove even gives a deeper spice to the aroma, hinting at pepper and chilli. It's so potent that it almost verges towards the smokiness of a Schlenkerla Weizen. Daym, that's one heavy and fine weizen nose.
Taste is also a firm and strong weizen contender, but very cleverly, it's not overtly heavy, brusque or intense. This allows it to maintain the supple drinkability of a lower ABV beer. Smooth banana characters feed into a more potent, but still smooth heat of alcohol on the back. In fact, the very light feel probably helps with the drinkability, and by toning down the intensity of the flavours—in a way, the feel itself isn't good, but it's as though it's sacrificing itself for the greater good.
This was quite a surprise. I expected a rather pedestrian dunkelweizen, possibly spiked with an incongruous alcohol burn, but instead we receive a beefed-up, but still wonderfully balanced example of the same.

On-tap at the Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta.
Pours a slightly hazy dark brown color with a one-finger tan head. The head dissipates into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.
Smells of smooth dark malts with large amounts of overripe bananas. Also present are hints of indistinct spices and larger amounts of toffee.
Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth dark malts with a hint of wheat twang kick things off and are joined quickly by soft banana flavors. Midway through the sip very slight amounts of bruised pear flavors make an appearance before being run off by moderate amounts of earthy hops. Near the end of the sip the flavors sweeten with the addition of light toffee and deep caramel malts. The hops, dark malt, and caramel malts fade out into a mildly bitter ending.
Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.
Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.
Overall this was an easy-drinking version of the style that was heavier on the malt profile than most. Not as complex as the world-class examples but a nice beer nonetheless. Worth a shot.

Pour is dark practically opaque with burgundy highlights and a thin but tight layer of ashen head which leaves plentiful spotty lacing all around the glass.
Fruity esters and Belgian spices predominate the nose, ripened banana dominates but some dark fruit and clove shine through. Malts are very bready and there is a twinge of grain and arising alcohol is you take a long smell at it.
Over all I feel that despite being a wheat the flavors come off as deep and earthy. A complex mix of muted banana mixed with cloves, dark fruit, figs and grapes come to mind along with a slight mustiness. Tartness comes from a wheat twang and the fruit at the end of the drink but settles nicely. Yeast assisted the complexity which brings the bready malts to surface. Clean but not crisp or overly drying on the finish. Sneaky alcohol, well disguised. Liquid banana and raisin bread.
Mouth feel is a little thin, not surprising due to this being a wheat beer, with active carbonation. Finish is clean.
Lips of faith series is showing up to impress this quarter. This beer feels like it borrowed some of the best qualities from both Abbey and Sunshine, a great value and a welcome treat.

Poured into a weizen glass. Pretty sure the ABV puts this into the weizenbock category.
4.0 A: Clearish deep amber/light brown color. Three fingers of beige creamy/frothy hybrid head. Average retention overall, but the last quarter inch sticks around for a while. Lots of irregularly placed lacing.
4.5 S: Big hit of banana and clove with pepper underneath. Good bit of roasty toastiness and I swear I'm picking up hints of bacon. Raw cocoa and some caramel. Very nice here.
4.0 T: Again tons of banana, clove, and pepper. More chocolaty than the nose suggested with about the same amount of caramel. Lightly roasty and toasty. Lightly boozy. The taste is good, but as of right now the flavors don't mesh seamlessly together, at least not yet.
4.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good carbonation for the style with plenty of spritiness to it. Very creamy, though could be a bit smoother.
4.0 D: Pretty good beer. I think after a couple years this could be a hell of a beer.

A - Very dark cola brown with ruby hues on the edges. Full, thick, creamy, sticky, off-white head. Great retention leaving a nice creamy lace.
S - Delivers just what you want from the style. Tons of banana, bubblegum, clove, pepper, estery aroma. Some sweet caramel and brown sugar in the back. A touch more peppery than some other dunkelweizens. Pretty sweet and the alcohol is very well hidden.
T - Similar to the nose, but the pepper and clove really come out, especially the pepper. It starts out with a spicy, peppery zing and then settles down a touch with the sweet malt and banana coming out a bit stronger. Banana and estery flavors finish the sip. The spice is persistent throughout and I think a slight alcohol warming comes along with that spiciness.
M - Medium body with good carbonation. Fairly smooth with a warming finish.
D - Tasty and slightly warming beer that is fairly easy to drink. Peppery spiciness slows down how fast I can drink it and how much I would want, but there is definitely enough sweetness to balance this out.
Notes: Pretty good showing of the style. More peppery and clove (spice in general) than some other German dunkelweizens I've had. There is enough sweet malt and banana flavors to hold up that spice though. Alcohol only slightly peaks its head and that is fairly dangerous with it being 9%. I really enjoyed this and the price isn't horrible (for a bomber and especially for a beer in the Lips of Faith series). Worth a try (and quite possibly subsequent tries).

I am glad this finally made it to Houston. I have been wanting to try this since it was released.
A: Pours an opaque dark brown color. A two finger tan head forms with good retention. A ring stays all the way down the glass. Sticky spiderweb looking lace is left behind as well.
S: Big banana esters up front and center. The banana is always there, but it never becomes cloying or over barring. Toasted and sweet malt as well. Very nice.
T: Follows the nose with a big banana ester flavor. Spicy and zesty. Toasted and sweet malt again. Dry wood which melds everything together.
M/D: A medium to full body. Creamy and smooth. A great beer to sip on. I am really enjoying the bottle.
This did not disappoint me. A very nice Dunkelweizen. A lot more alcohol than I would think for the style, but it is really well hidden. Everything works well together. Highly recommended.

22oz bottle into an Andechs weizen glass.
Pours with a tawny, amber-cola body that sports a healthy dose of carbonation. Attractive head sits as a crown of khaki bubbles up top, retaining well and leaving a few patches of lace behind. Creamy weizenbock- like aroma with vanilla and German yeast esters of bubblegum and banana.
Very flavorful beer, with floral hops and a big malt presence that coats the palate with wheat-y vanilla, banana, and clove. Alcohol lurks in the background, adding a spicy semi-heat to the finish. Mouthfeel is hefty, but not overbearing to the tongue. Smooth carbonation makes for a smoother finish. One of New Belgium's better LoF releases, and a great hybridization of the Weizenbock/Dunkelweizen style

On tap at my work. Pours a dark brown that looks ruby red when held up to light. Medium cream colored head that disappears quickly. Scent is like a sweet creamy dessert...it smells exactly like a banana split! I'm not even joking. That's all I can say about the smell. It's quite lovely actually. Taste is very sweet with dark malt and intense banana and clove flavors. Some hints of chocolate as well as tasty yeast and some light pepper. Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is creamy and full bodied. Drinkability is high. Very tasty beer!

A: poured into a tulip glass this dunkelweiss pours a dark burgundy/brown with about one finger of tan head that dissipates rather quickly leaving nice lacing.
S: quite complex I picked up root and malt with a bit of spice, the gf said it smelt like the wort at NB.
T: lots going on here, get the lightness of the weiss but also some peppery spice as well, there were moments when i felt like I was drinking german chocolate cake.
M: very crisp, does not coat the mouth
O: overall I was a bit skeptical of this beer as this is not my preferred style but New Belgium Lips of Faith series continues to impress and at $5.99 this will be added to my everyday 22oz beers.

Extra bottle showed up today from thagr81us. Thanks! I've wanted to get this since I heard of it. I hope NB start distributing in this market soon. Violated my no beer in April rule because of the huge tax check I had to write tonight. I don't write a 5000$ check without getting a blowjob, nap, or a beer. 2 out of three ain't bad.
Beer served in an Erdinger Weissbrau glass, Beer is dark brown / ruby, mostly clear with a tan head of small bubbles, moderate to low carbonation, lacing on the glass. It isn't hazy enough, it isn't carbonated enough. Oh well.
Sweet, cloves, some banana, smell is mildly alcoholic, whoa, this beer is 9% ABV. That sucks. Too much alcohol.
Wow, this beer tastes awesome. It is medium in body, perhaps a little heavy, sweet up front and finishes with a nice banana character. There is some mild spiciness in the front half of the beer. The finish is nice.
This beer started out slow and had a nice finish to it. I really liked it.

Draft service into a long-stemmed fluted tulip glass at Churchill's in San Marcos.
A: Slightly hazy, dark garnet-tinted brown color with one finger of fine, light beige foam head. Moderate lacing remains on the glass.
S: Spicy, with cloves that stand out and also complement the mild roast. Yeast is also present, adding some contrasting brightness. No alcohol is detected.
T: Begins off-dry, with nutty brown malt and yeast phenolics that are mild compared to the aroma. Fine tartness emerges in the soft bready middle that retains some nutshell and even mild chocolate roasted character. The finish is similarly soft, with cloves and fading dark fruit. No alcohol is detected.
M: Medium viscosity, balanced on the palate showing both acidic and coating aspects, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: This is definitely one of the most unexpected styles to come out of the Lips of Faith series thus far, being neither sour, or barrel-aged, or even Belgian-inspired. In execution it is really good, bringing a focused but expected collection of sensory qualities to a beer that is deceptively easy-going at 9% abv. Although flavors can't quite live up to the intensity promised by the smell, this beer's different facets work together in a practiced--almost engineered--fashion. Doubly appropriate, considering its German pedigree.

A - Pours into my snifter a dark brown/red caramel color with almost two fingers of tan head, moderate retention and lacing.
S - Banana and clove, chocolate, wheat, roasted grain and nutmeg.
T - Not as explosive as the aroma, yet something new for my palate. Getting a lot of that banana and clove, nutmeg, somewhat sweet, yet spicy, roast coffee/chocolate are very mild, but there, with very little alcohol present.
M - Medium-heavy in body, pretty creamy and well rounded.
D - This is a new one for me, interesting style and another solid offering from New Belgium.

A - Poured out a cloudy, dark brown color with a thick, foamy, tan, two-finger head. Nice rings of lace were left behind when the head finally receded.
S - It smelled of roasted malt and caramel with a subtle clove touch.
T - It tasted of sweet caramel maltiness, wheat and a sharp hop bitterness. The banana and clove flavors took a back seat to the malt and bitter bite.
M - It was smooth and very crisp. A medium-bodied beer with a dry finish
O - Really nice dunkelweizen. The Lips of Faith series continues to impress.
