A 22 ounce bottle picked up at the local co-op. Poured into a tulip glass...

Pours a hazy, vibrant orange color with about a centimeter of foamy, pure-white head. Head deteriorates quickly, but leaves some white strands as lacing on the glass and numerous legs through the surface of the liquid.

Aroma is of orange citrus, tart lemon, faint funk, cardamom, a touch of caramel, clove, and a bit of cinnamon.

It tastes strongly of orange and lemon citrus, with a tart tinge from the brett. The spices are relatively indistinguishable, but do coalesce into an almost chocolate-like finish. It's like biting into a tart orange that has been drizzled in chocolate (by what I hope was a fancy chocolate-drizzling fountain) and rolled in some spices.

Mouthfeel is decent; it's amply carbonated, but finishes rather dry and a touch sticky. Nothing special there.

Overall, a good offering that's refreshing and enjoyable. A nice change of pace from some of the more prevalent styles.

Had this on 2013-05-10 in Columbia, PA

A - Fairly clear gold with a big 2-finger white head and moderate lacing.

S - Spice, some funk, hay, honey, floral. Nice complexity.

T - Tastes like it smells. Herbal spicy, lemon, mint, cracker, Brett funk, white pepper, finishes on the medicinal bitter side.

M - Thin body and light-medium carbonation.

O - Not world class but quite enjoyable.

"A celestial collision of orange-hued ale, citrusy lemon verbena, and unidentified flying brettanomyces, launch to NewBelgium.com/BDM". Brewed in the style of a Biere De Garde. No bottle date- old style cap (New Belgium Goblet cap), suggests that this is an older bottle.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a New Belgium Globe Glass. Served north of 50º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours an off-white creamy head with a medium thick lacing but below average retention. Body color is a caramel orange amber hue, carbonation is spritely and plentiful. Not a bad appearance. 3.5

(Smell) Light biscuity malts, sour funk and fruit notes, boozy alcohol character, heavy spice and yeast profile with clove, banana and white pepper. The aroma goes long for collective intensity, there's certainly no holding back here, it's one of the most in-your-face Biere De Gardes I've smelled. 3.75

(Taste) Crackery pale malt character with fruity esters and a milder banana and clove character, but still striking. There's a musty, dry finish lacking in sweetness. It's a bit harsh and shallow on drinkability overall. 3.25

(Mouthfeel) Light cracker malt dryness and a mild creamy spritz of carbonation on the tongue. Medium alcohol presence. Body is medium/heavy for the style, medium overall. 3.5

(Overall) This was a pretty heavy-bodied Biere-De-Garde with a bold spice profile. Perhaps it doesn't cater to everybody's liking. 3.5
