This was an odd brew and based on my experience with it I left wondering if it was in fact infected.
On tap at Clark St. Ale House in Chicago.

It poured with a slight tint of dark red. Had a strong, off-putting aroma. Some sour cherries in the nose underneath the nastiness. Thin bodied, slightly sour flavored with a lot of phenolic notes. I felt like this beer went from a sour to tart to rotting flavor of dark cherries.

Pours a watery light brown with some reddish highlights, khaki head faded away quickly, no lacing. Nose gets some caramel, dark fruit and some warm bread notes, tastes buds get all too. A bit thin, not much in the carbonation area, but damn tasty for sure!

Mostly opaque brown body with a tan head, spotted lacing. Smell and taste are the same: toasted caramel, dark fruit galore, with an earthy yeast finish, but then in the taste a final wave of dark fruit lingers on the palate as a long aftertaste. On the sweeter side of the style spectrum. Feel is malty and smooth, medium-light bodied, with some residual sweetness and yeast finishing. The wife liked it

I'm the only the 2nd BA'er in 2 years to review Generator. Further research reveals this release has 4 check-ins a day this month of 3/21 at UnTappd. Bought as part of a build-your-own-sixer at Trader Joes, this indicates that national chain's commitment to local brews.

Generator (a clever name) pretty much only has slightly above average Looks; a pretty, dark amber, but not enough bubbles or foam. Smells announce a mostly malt doppel, but are muted. However, Tastes are malty rich and balanced by sufficient hops and make me want a Generator again. In my mouth, a pleasant sit to contemplate the lousy winter quickly passing.

I don't have a micro-review of Metropolitan... and I should because of their quality. My basic avoidance is priorities: the German tradition is third on my list. But, Metropolitan brews stick pretty close to the various German traditions (north and south) and deserves more attention from me. Hence, they will get it... hopefully before they re-release this next season. Prost, Metropolitan !

1/16/22 Bought another copy and see that not one BA'er in the last 10 months heeded my call to get closer to this doppel. But UnTappd is as they have produced 31 in the last 30 days. So just to show you shirkers, I'm keeping count over at UnTappd. Prost !

No bottling date; consumed on 1/14/21

Pours a clear, deep mahogany with subtle maroon accents and topped with a half-finger of rich, creamy, pale beige foam; head recedes quickly to a spotty, paper-thin layer of cap, a moderate, frothy collar, and and limited array of firm, webby in spots along the walls of the glass.

Aroma begins with hints of dried caramel welcoming sweeter toffee and figs over time as a rich malt base is balanced by breadier tones, drying over the olfactory middle to rounded sugar plum and candied prune on the back end of the bouquet.

Taste shows notes of toasted brown bread and hints of roasted clove upfront, proceeding cooly into plum and fig over the mid-palate; a candi sugar sweetness on the back end evolves into stiff yet distant tinge of grassy bitterness cut by rich plum and hints of burnt bread crusts.

Mouthfeel features a medium body and a carbonation slightly above moderate, which dissipates cleanly over a slick mid-palate to a lush, silky back end; spritzy dryness on the finish yields a warmth lingering past the swallow.

A doppelbock leaning sweet and with an unconventional, bitter edge, finding unusual harmony with the beer's richer malt profile; additionally, a slick, easy body has this brew drinking approachably and true to its strong lager style origins; steady and overall pleasant.

Unknown vintage; drank 2/9/16 @ the Yarchives.

See-through brown/purple appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small tan head; frothy lace.

Caramel, plum & cane sugar notes in the nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Caramel & plum flavors up front; mild cane sugar & faint pickle notes on the finish.

Lots of flavor, but the mix didn't work for me; kinda odd?!

Looks like a clean amber ale, with a reddish tint when held to the light. Malty, Carmel aroma, with a faint hint of dried cranberry or raspberry, and a touch of cocoa.

Taste is sweet, with nice malt and a somewhat dry ,slightly boozy finish. This is a very good beer which reminds me that I need to revisit it and others of the style. Classics never go out of style.

On tap at Hopleaf in Andersonville. Pours a lovely toffee brown. Not much in the nose but lots of flavor. A little heavy in the sweet malt for the genre, but it's a good sipper.

Ordered a pint at a bar/ jug filling station, had them fill a crowler for home.
Great Dark fruit/stone fruit/plum flavor. Sweet Caramel too with some toasted bread ta boot.
Smooth, sweet, malty and syrupy. A Hint of brandy on the finish. Impressive beer.

Excellent beer that showcases the brewery's capacity to create great and diverse lagers. The look is gorgeous, a deep dark caramel color with a charming off-white foam. The aroma is very subtle, not much to write about there but you don't crack open a beer to smell it. Flavorful, drinkable, and deceptively strong. The sweetness up front balances the bitter elements very smoothly and the flavor post-sip develops very nicely which encourages an appropriate savoring. Some beers with a high abv encourage nursing by simply being too overwhelming to gulp, but this beer does it by tasting too good to drink quickly.
My only real complaint is that it isn't more widely available, since it's possibly Metropolitan's best offering.
