Pours a dark brown. Holding right up to a lightbulb, it is very bright brown with a deep reddish hue. On top sits a 2 finger khaki head that never quite vanishes like frothed milk on top of a cappuccino after it has been sitting for a while.
The aroma is damn good. All different kinds of chocolate aromas are out in full force, yet in perfect harmony. A touch of fresh roasted grain sits well with the chocolate aromas. As it warms, I get more caramel malt and dark fruit.
The flavor is malty and leans toward sweet. Bitterness is medium for the style but soft. This porter is not at all hoppy - actually I think some of the bitterness is from the roasted grain. A touch of raisiny dark fruit likely from dark crystal malt is subtle but noticable. Roastiness shows up more in the finish. Some chocolate, more noticable when it is cool than warm. Slick but a little creamy like drinking milk. Very good beer, but it reminds me a little too much of a dark Scotch Ale or Doppelbock rather than a roasty Porter. Plenty of body for the gravity keeps it from being thin, but still it's very drinkable.

On tap at Stcks and Stones Greensboro.Poureda deep chocolate brown with a tinge of ruby,a thinner but well defined ta colored head atop.Aromas of bitter chocolate, roast, and hefty earth, pretty robust aromas.I liked the full mellow mouthfeel,it glided down easily.Flavors are a nice mix of almost raw earthiness and roast mixed with chocolate and some brown sugar sweetness.A well rounded beer,it has everything someone would want in a porter.

on-tap at Pandora's Pies
Pours a very dark brown/black with some red appearing when held up to light. Nicely colored tan head that clings to the sides. Smell is roasted malt (coffee and dark chocolate) but weak. Taste is coffee, hint of chocolate, and some nice bitterness. Mouthfeel is sadly a tad watery but also has a nice creaminess with medium carb, medium body.
Somewhere between good and average on my scale. I'm not a huge porter fan but this one is quite solid with nothing wrong with it other than being a tad watery.

tap
Pours a dark black with brownish tint around the edges, low off-white head retains as a bit of lacing.
Chocolatey nose with some smoked malts.
Bready and toasty chocolate flavors, mild bitterness.
Medium body with soft carbonation.
Tasty porter, good body and flavor, would definitely have this again. Not especially unique, but solid.

On tap at Sawmill Tap Room 12/17/11
Pours a deep black with a thin lacing of white head. The nose features roasted malts and some faint coffee. The flavor is roasty with some faint coffee up front and finished with faint chocolate notes and a decent hop bitterness for balance. This is a medium to full bodied beer that's well carbonated and very smooth.
It's a little one dimensional, but it's spot on for the style. The flavor is balance and the body is close to full, making this a solid beer to have on these cold days.

well, silver medal porter at GABF.
Pours dark brown with black hues. When held up to the light, very slight hues of mahogany and brown. decent looking brew.
Smells light, almost scary light. Hints of citrus, and loads of smoke.
Taste is something you grow into. At first, it tastes light, citric, and slick. Then smoke is almost subdued. As you drink the pint, the smoke becomes more prevalent, and roasted malts take forefront. If it wasnt for Great Lakes and Founders, this would be perfect. Leaves a smoked feeling, along with a chewy roast.
The malt leaves a light feeling. More refreshing than most.
