Located in northwestern DC, Old Europe is a great place to grab some German beer and food.
There are only three brews on tap, however they always taste fresh and delicious. It would be nice to see perhaps five or six taps allowing for a wider variety of authentic German draft beers. Köstritzer Schwarzbier, Reissdorfer Kölsch and Bitburger Pilsner are regularly on draft, as well as fifteen or so different bottled German beers. Draft prices are reasonable, relative to what you would pay elsewhere in downtown DC, or any other major city.
The atmosphere is elegant, but not uptight. Art decorates every inch of the walls and there is a warming German vibe about the place.
The service has been consistently gracious and friendly, helping to create a relaxing situation in which to enjoy food and beverage, not feeling rushed in any way.
The food was particularly delicious and a great compliment to the beer (or is the beer supposed to compliment the food?).
It's hard to get out of this place cheap, but I can't argue with the quality. This is definitely my favorite German place in the area, and an establishment I look forward to visiting again. Highly recommended.

A really neat hideaway restaurant in Glover Park situated in Northwest DC. I only come here when I want my German beer fix (meaning German beer being poured into 1L steins or Das Boots on tap). The last time I came out here was October of 2010 with a buddy who happened to be German and he vouched that the interior decor was authentic and resembles what a German bar or home looks like. There was an old blind lady playing the piano and I believe I saw her playing the previous time I went. Adds nice taste to the niche place. Apparently, they have a rathskellar / basement for private parties and the like. The food was just okay - I had a pretzel and maybe a dish. They were quite overpriced and wish they had a much bigger beer selection to boot. I think they only had two on tap. The service was really slow and I wish they'd have better looking German waitresses working too. :)
