This restaurant/bar & beer garden is situated right behind Nurnberg Castle, close to a Coach parking area, on Vestnertorgraben, at the main entrance into the Castle on Burgermeistersteg. If you were walking from the main Railway Station, you would not easily find this without prior knowledge! If you have reached the Tiergartnertor entrance and Albrech Durers House, then come out of the old town across the dry moat through the Tiergartner Tor entrance, then immediately turn right following the sidewalk (footpath) for about 150 yards and you will see it by the next entrance across the dry moat into the Castle grounds. Alternatively, get tram Number 4 from Plarrer, get off at the Tiergartnertor, and just keep walking forward following city walls past the Tiergartnertor entrance.
The Hexenhausla (Witches House) has a very attractive beer garden surrounded by shrubs and bamboo, several shady areas under small shelters and under large umbrellas, with tables for any number from 6 to about 15. Inside the 'house' are various small rooms and little alcoves very cosy and intimate with attractive decorations appropriate for a witches home!
They serve Kitzmann Beers, both light and dark (dunkel) unfiltered keller beers in a crock jug, also the full range of Tucher beers and also Konig Pilsner beers. Excellent food menu of hot and cold food with wide choice and reasonable prices. We ate here several times and it was always good. We tried the Kitzmann Keller beers and the Konig Pilnser and all were good. Service was very attentive, though not much English spoken, but always pleasant and helpful. An English Menu was available.
Although this place is obviously designed to attract the tourist and visitor who are going to the Castle, we found the beer, food and service very good and enjoyed our visits here. The beer garden is very attractive, and illuminated at night, though there is also plenty of room inside on the cooler days and evenings.
Well worth a visit, even if it is aimed at the visiting tourist!
