Right after my friend picked me up from Salgado Filho Intl Airport, I convinced him to drive me here for a taste of Brazilian beer. The drive there was a little scary, lots of very tiny, undermaintained buildings with homeless folks juggling on the street to make money from passing drivers.
Costi Bebidas occupies a small building. There´s no air conditioning inside, so I ended up hot and sweaty as I shopped here. Was it worth it? Well, they did have a very strong selection of beers. Imports include Chimay, Weihenstephaner, Samichlaus, Urthel, Karmeliet, Achel, Meantime, Fullers, and many more. But the domestic selection is this store´s strength, with beers like Eisenbahn, Coruja, Baden Baden, Schmidt, Dado, Wals, Bamberg, Backer, Abadessa, and Dana Bier. Also sold here is a great collection of glasware. Although my Portuguese was limited, the service was great helping me and my friend, and even carried my 11 bottle order to the car for us! (update: My bottles were in good condition despite the interior conditions). All in all, a great store if you hapen to be the Gaúcho capital of Brazil.
Update: The selection is phenominal by Brazilian standards, let alone the standards of Porto Alegre. You can get most of the imports sold in the country, plus a ton of domestic microbreweries. The only criticism are the very high prices, even by Brazilian standards.
