A - Pours a cherry/mahogany color with a cloudy body. Off-white, creamy head leaving a nice lacing. 4/5

S - Nice acidic character. Vinegar, wooden notes. 3.5/5

T - Nice balance of the flavors with wooden notes and berries. 4/5

M - Good balance sweet/acid. Slightly tannic from the red wine barrel. Very smooth. 4.5/5

O - Refreshing, well thought out and to style. The wine barrels really add something. 4/5

Appearance. Pours a hazy deep amber-brown with a slight pink tone and over 2 fingers of cream coloured head that falls fairly fast to a thick skim.

Smell. Sweet cherries, dank old wood and dry musty funk. Smells like a nice Flanders red to me!

Taste. Lightly bitter oak, some sweet grainy malt. Some lightly sour and sweet cherry, and a bit of tart red berries. A little bit of woody funk is there as well.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body with medium, fine and smooth carbonation.

Overall. Another good Canadian Flanders red ...or is it an Oud Bruin? I dunno, let's stick with the American Wild and call it a day. Would be happy to drink this again.

Bottle from Sammy, 750ml into a tulip (while watching The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX - damn).

Reddish, kinda brown but who knows - I drank this in a movie theatre. Some head, presumably white. Sweet, bretty Flanders red nose. Lots of malt, some acetic, some cherry and tart notes. Taste has lots of moderate acidic, tart cherry flavours. Sweet red malts, oak but a pucker in the finish. Medium body, and medium high carb. Really good as it warms, a pleasure to have.

"Townships Red". I've never seen a Canadian-brewed Flanders red so I had to pick this one up in spite of the price tag. It is expensive but this sure is a beautifully packaged brew: capped green 750ml with a detailed description printed on high-quality paper. Quebec malts, Hallertau hops, wild yeast and aged in Compton red wine oak barrels.

The light-hazelnut coloured body is opaque, assumedly with yeast judging by the nose. A tall, fizzy cream-coloured head settles to a thin ring around the glass.

Lots of funky brettanomyces hit the nose as soon as the bottle is opened. Astringent lemon, sour cherries, red wine vinegar, candy malt and a little roast. As anything with brett is a rarity in Canada, I'm always happy to have some in front of my nose.

The barrel makes itself known immediately, coming off a bit brash. Oak, dry red wine and brett can't be missed but what lies underneath is possibly a little thin. Sour cherries and vinegar are nice but it seems under-malted. Alcohol is well-disguised.

The body is a bit too thin and carbonation, while present, doesn't seem well incorporated somehow.

I really appreciate a brewery in Quebec attempting this but there is too much barrel and not enough backing it up. If I'm in the mood for a Flanders red I'd rather pick up a Duchess de Bourgogne, especially at this price. Also, opening a 750ml bottle of Flanders red is a big commitment; I prefer the Duchess' smaller serving size.

Bottle: Poured a reddish color ale with a small bubbly head withy minimal retention and some light lacing. Aroma of vinous malt with some medium tart notes is quite interesting. Taste is also an interesting mix between some tart notes with some vinous notes and light funky ester. Acidity is limited (which is not necessarily a bad thing) and light residual grapes notes are more or less pleasant. Body is below average with some watery notes with low carbonation. Interesting experiment though lacking in funky ester and more tart notes would have provided better enjoyment.

Bottle enjoyed at Mondiale 2011. Flanders Red style, amber clour and lacey. Well malted. Winey aromas. Sour, mildly acidic, and a great drinker and so tasty, a complex reminder of great flanders/wild/funky beers of the past. Whatever they did, send me more bottles of it!
