Cool place to hang out with a beer and a sub. The owner and his employees are well informed about the beer they carry and they have a very decent selection of beers to choose from. The only low point is they are extremely overpriced. You can go to any of the competition's stores and pick up the same bottle or 4pack for a few bucks cheaper, every time. If it is a more basic beer you can head 5 minutes down the road to Wegmans and pick it up even cheaper than that. They keep the rarest beers "in the back" and you have to know the owner to obtain those beers. I used to go here a lot, but have found better alternatives. The score stays high because they do have quality beers, great service and a great selection, but when I go to a bottle shop I am usually dropping $50 to $100 and that same order would be $30-$70 elsewhere.

Decent selection, prices looked to be in line for the area. Was there at 11 on a Wednesday when they opened, neither of the employees asked if I had any questions, just kinda side-eyed me the whole time. Didn't try the food but looked like standard deli fare.

A nice little shop that pulls down the big releases. Wish the singles selection to the left when you walk in was better. The staff are non-pestering and friendly.

UPDATE: 8-14-2014

Yet another re-review of Krugel's Georgetown Deli & Beer.

My last re-review was at the beginning of this year, but at the time of writing I had stopped going to Krugel’s for quite some time, so this newest re-review is probably closer to a years time since I actually patronized the place seeing as I had stopped going to Krugel’s all together ... but a friend of mine talked me into giving them another chance with tales of lower prices and more courteous service, so here we are!

First off I do have to say they have adjusted their prices quite a bit. Still not a home run pricing wise, but a lot of higher end/rarer bottles that were $8-10 over typical NEPA market value are now $2-4 over typical NEPA market value, which when you combine with their selection, is much easier to stomach and not nearly as egregious.

Service has adjusted much the same as their pricing .... not the end all be all of service (but that is few and far between in general in the industry) but Joe is quick to help and is very knowledgeable. The rest of the staff is quite young, as is their knowledge of high end beers, but is in no way off putting, and the last several times I have stopped in they were more that courteous.

The shop is well organized, clean and easy to navigate .... the only gripe, and quite a small one, I’d have about the store as a whole is all the price labels are on the underside of the bottles. And as a person who loves big beers that are typically bottle conditioned, having to turn the bottle sideways is not ideal.

Overall I’d have to say Krugel’s has seen and/or heard the issues people have had with their pricing, service, etc ... and are really putting forth and effort to alleviate these issues, most importantly get in line with pricing in and around the valley. As someone who wrote them off for good, as of recently, I have found myself stopping by a few times monthly ... and if things keep trending the way they are, I don’t see why that wouldn’t continue.

UPDATE: 2-15-2014

I'm Re-reviewing Krugel's Georgetown Deli & Beer almost two years to the date of my original review ... and oooohhh what a difference two years can make.

Service, while not overly stellar previously, is now abysmal. Condescending and rude a good bulk of the time.

Examples like:

::Being laughed at when asking about certain rare beers.

::Told "no" with an eye roll when asking about 4-pack pricing on beer's that were previously purchased from there in 4 packs for months.

::Multiple times wasn't given change on purchases that required a few pennies back. (I'm neither poor nor wealthy, but I at least expect change, not matter how little, from any purchases I make. At least give me the courtesy of saying "keep it")

For the most part their pricing is ridiculously high, it is in line with fine dining/bar prices and nowhere close to other to-go places in the area.

The only bright spot, if you are willing to look past all those glaring offenses, is that their selection is still good ... although it seems to be thinning as of late on the beers I seek.

As you can see from my original review of Krugels, I was all "all in" on their business and was willing to overlook the price gouging. But with more professional, courtesy, friendly and decently stocked to-go establishments pooping up in the area, I personally have been forced, by Krugel's Georgetown Deli & Beer themselves, to cut them off my list of places to willingly give my hard earned money.

Old Review: 04-12-2012

I live about five minutes from Krugels, so the distance combined with my love of good beer made this place opening a godsend.

I've been buying beer from here since it's inception and over all is has been a good experience, mostly due to the selection.

They are pretty overpriced (about two dollars more per high quality 4/6 pack) than other establishments, but with the selection they have I can overlook that price difference for the convenience of having "harder to finds" right in my back yard.

Joe the owner is very professional a knowledgeable, and is always quick stop say hi when I stop by. The rest of the staff is quite young, not as knowledgeable, but very nice.

Krugel's is sort of in an odd spot. As one of the only places offering this large of a selection in Northeast PA, it's hard to compare it to any other shop. While the service is hit or miss (normally not bad, it just is or isn't there), the store itself is fine. You probably won't find the rarest of the rare but they go where no other local store does.

Made a day trip to PA strictly to go to this place. They had Cinnamon Roll'd Wake N Bake on tap. Not to mention they have one of those Nitro fill growler stations, which was a nice surprise to see. They had a huge selection. Some reviewers say nothing is priced, but every bottle I looked at had a sticker on the bottom. The biggest surprise of all was at the check out, when I looked up and saw 2 bottles of BCBBW staring at me. Over 2 months after they were released! They were a little pricey at 9$ a piece but I've seen multiple places here in NY selling them for that as well.

There is simply no better place to buy single or six pack beers anywhere within 100 miles. Prices could be better, but they claim to have 1100 beers and I don't doubt it for a second. This is THE place in northeast PA to buy craft beer, and I rarely come up with something they don't have in stock. There is an entire section dedicated to ech major beer style. They also do mixed six packs and have six beers on tap which rotate frequently for growler fills or if you want to enjoy the food (which I hear is great). Friday evenings they have a rep from some craft brew company giving out samples and sometimes glasses. If you're a beer lover and come to the Wilkes-Barre area, make sure to stop by.

My wife and I stopped here today to look around. We sat in the middle of about a thousand beers and had a couple sandwiches from the deli and an ice cold draft. The food is delicious and priced very reasonably. The owner and his wife are very nice to talk to. Joe really knows his stuff and was nice enough to give us a free t shirt and Trappest bottle opener. I have been here several times as it is only about 45 minutes from where we live. The selection of beers is unreal and prices about average. If your looking for a beer chances are Joe has it! I will be visiting again for sure.

This place has the largest selection of beers in the area by far but their service is horrible (high school kids that have no idea what they are talking about) and the prices are crazy. I have seen some stuff on their shelves for double the normal price. That being said you could find rareish stuff here because it just sits on the shelves at their extremely high prices for months until someone convinces themselves that it is worth it. There are better places to visit in the area.

I'm going to be 100% honest-

They have a slightly larger selection than most places in the area (except for maybe Sabatini's in Exeter) but their business practices are pretty awful and their prices are consistently higher than the average for most beers.

The store is usually staffed by high school aged kids who are completely unfamiliar with craft beer. Their customer service is so terrible that after calling to ask if they had a beer (which they said they had and then promptly hung up on me) I proceeded to drive 40 minutes to their store only to find out that they "didn't get a lot of it" and are rationing it out to customers. I could only buy 2 bottles despite having driven down there solely for that beer.

You would think that they would tell you stuff like that on the phone, right?

Anyway I proceed to the checkout a little disappointed and then I find out that they are charging me $5 a bottle when a six pack would normally be $13- so they expect me to pay $10 for two bottles.

Now this wasn't a particularly rare beer (Nugget Nectar- which is a locally brewed and highly anticipated seasonal of Pennsylvania)- in fact within the past 3 weeks I had gotten it numerous times at 2 other area stores but the one closest to me (Wegmans) was out.

Instead I called Jessup Beverage and the owner (Chuck) put 2 six packs in the fridge for me while I drove there. He also charged me the usual price of $13 per six pack.

This store consistently misses out on a lot of the big releases, they consistently have higher prices than other local shops, and their customer service is awful. I would avoid going here unless this is your only option.

Great selection but a bit pricey. If you're looking for the more popular micros, check out Wegmans for better prices.

Otherwise they seem to have the best beer selection I've seen in NEPA so far. During my most recent visit they had a nice small batch of sours and I was even able to score some Cantillon which I can't even find back home (Northern VA). Not sure if it's because the places back home just don't care or sell out what they get so quickly.

It seems most people working there aren't extremely knowledgeable in beer but during my most recent visit rather late at night I'm guessing it was the manager or possibly owner was working. He was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations based on the beers I was grabbing.

Easy on/off I81 and a great section make this a great place to stop when passing through the area.

Bombers are arranged by brewery against the back wall whereas 6/4 packs are arranged in islands by general style. In the front of the store is a modest section where mixed 6 packs can be assembled. Unfortunately I didn't find anything of interest there and would have bought a lot more if I could have broken 6 packs in other parts of the store.

4 or 5 taps were available for growler fills or for drinking a pint with your lunch. I wasn't planning on eating, but the sandwiches looked so good and a great deli smell permeated the store, so I ended up with a very tasty fish sandwich and a pint of Weyerbacher Double Simcoe.

The help was young and did not seem to be too knowledgeable or experienced. My pint lost a few sips to a neighboring chair and the table on the way to my place - which were not cleaned up by the waitperson. But other than lacking experienced staff, this is a great place for lunch or to peruse a wild selection.

I drove two hours with the single reason being this establishment. I read that the selection was the best in PA, it couldn't have been more correct. I spoke with the owner for about an hour and had an absolute blast browsing his selection. The beers are organized by style, which helps when the amount of beers is 1200+. I was able to find many hard to find brews along with my seasonal favorites. If you are in the tri-state area, you must make the drive. Easily one of the best beer stores I have ever visited.

Discovered this place after doing a google search for Craft Beer in northeast PA. Read a review stating that carried over 1100 different bottles, figured I had to check it out. I've been back at least once a week since ( and this is 20 mile drive from my house).

They have an awesome selection of beers by all the reputable breweries and some gems that many don't know about. They have 6 rotating taps to have a pint while browsing or to fill your growler.

Service is good, I talked beer with the owner for a good 45 minutes, which could have went longer but he seemed busy. This place is definitely my new go to for craft beers. One of the few notable bottle shops in NEPA.

Had a fun day in Wilkes-Barre today. Visited Wegman's who was having a free food and beer pairing event. Exciting walking around a grocery store sampling beer and food and dodging shoppers with carts. Next we hit the Homebrew Expo day at the new Breakers Brewery building.

But an unexpected highlight of the day was our very first visit to Georgetown. Ran into some people who were at the Homebrew event there afterward and they recommended some selections. Had a Founders Breakfast stout from the tap $5. They also had Pumking on tap ($20 growler fill) and sam adams double pumpkin and one of the local Breakers beers on. They have only 7 taps but have high turnaround and they are probably always fresh that way. Tables, not fancy but functional to sit and have a beer surrounded by the best beer selection i've seen in Northeast PA (NEPA).

I definitely saw beers here that I can't get anywhere else unless I drive twice as far or more. They had good selection of Cigar City, Southern Tier, Voodoo Brewing, etc. I know a lot of people thought the prices were a lot higher than wegman's but hey, i only noticed a dollar or so difference in a bomber size bottle price. For the really price conscious go to wegman's first, get what you want. then come here. You'll want to buy more because they have more of the rarities.

I drove about 45 minutes to get here so what's a few extra bucks? If you are out of the area, wegman's, georgetown, and a stop at the Arena Sports Bar and Grille are a worthwhile day trip. With all three here I will try to make it up to here more frequently.

My first trip there I was on a mission to find The Bruery Cuir, I was excited that they had it and snatched up two bottles, and even went back to grab a bottle of the Coton for good measure. Prices seem pretty reasonable compared to other places.

Amazing selection, but very expensive. I know the PA laws have a lot to do with this, but there are many items here (ie. $30 Angel's Share, $18+ Alesmith, etc..) that I can buy online and have shipped for less. The standard 6-packs and bombers seem to be about $2-4 dollars more expensive than Wegmans.

Even with the high prices if you want a one stop shop for Bells, Founders, Alesmith, Dark Horse, Cigar City, Lost Abbey, Port, Hoppin Frog, Terrapin plus almost every national and PA brewery then this is the place. With a selection this large you do have to watch out for freshness - the Jai Alai when I stopped last was over 4 months old and I saw several other brews that were getting long in the tooth.

The service is good, every time I've stopped someone has offered to help. Unfortunately I need more help than normal because the layout is by style which confuses things. They have deli food and draft beer/growlers but I've never tried these options.

I ended up getting things I couldn't find in MA and some I hadn't even heard of. The only negative, like others have noted, are the prices. I went down the road to Wegman's to buy my standard Bell's and Founder's stuff, which was usually $3-$4 cheaper, but Georgetown had a bunch of both that Wegman's didn't have.

They now stock well over 1000 beers and the staff is very knowledgeable on the beer that they have. If there's a particular beer that you are looking for that they don't have, they have a request form that you can fill out and they'll try their best to get some for you. Their prices are reasonable - better than most other places in the area. I've eaten there a few times and the food is always excellent, but my main reason for visiting is to grab a few new beers to stock my fridge at home.

I stopped by here for lunch on 26JAN11 while on my way to Ft Indiantown Gap for a Battle of the Bulge re-enactment.

Found this place in a rather non-descript, one-story, drab building in a strip-mall type setting. Once entered, there is a deli-counter straight ahead to take your food orders and pay for your bier, etc. The left wall has assorted singles for making your own 6-pack. A few small tables were in the adjacent area, with a cooler against the front wall. Further to the right are more tables to dine at, surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of different biers from hither and yon. As stated in other reviews, the arrangement of the biers does make it a bit difficult to find something from a particular brewer. Then again, it affords one the chance to compare similarly styled biers from various brewers. Prices for the biers were a touch higher than in my home area, but I saw scores of biers I'd never heard of before. Foodwise, the prices there were quite reasonable. I had a cheese-steak sub which was enormous and wonderfully tasty; a solid value at its price. I was tempted to snag a growler, but those tended to be steep in the cost per ounce area, so I passed. So, my sub with a side of o-rings, 2 pints of bier, and 4 assorted bombers of barleywine and DIPAs ran me about $53. Not bad overall. Atmosphere was decent, but you're basically sitting in a bier-store while eating and drinking, so... Service, on the other hand, was top-shelf. Both the young gent and lady were right there to answer any questions I had or to give assistance. Quite impressed, I was. I'd stop back any time I'm in the area. Prosit!

Stopped here a few weeks ago and was very impressed by the selection, the best I have seen in the area. As other reviews have noted, the prices can be out of whack with what is available just a mile or two away, for example Founders 6 packs were several dollars higher than Wegmans. I picked up a DFH Squall in Binghamton on my drive south for 9.99. It was 18.99 here. But the selection is awesome and to be fair, sometimes prices are more in line with other places I frequent.

The store is arranged by style as opposed to brand. This takes some getting used to, but I have seen it in a few places recently and am getting accustomed to it. The folks working there were friendly and helpful. The great selection will ensure me stopping in whenever I'm in the area.

This is one of a growing batch of bottle shops in this region. The beer display areas comprise almost 3/4 of the entire place and is clean and well-organized. Refrigerated coolers line one wall of this establishment. Seasonals are typically displayed in a separate area. There is a also a growler fill section with at least 6 taps available.
The beer selection itself is quite superb. Bottles, sixers, bombers, and bottles are all included here. Probably the best selection in the region.
The employees are friendly, willing to help, and seem to know their beer pretty well. There are beer tastings held frequently.
In regards to food, I have had only had 1 order, but it was good. In this sense, I can't rate reliably due to an insufficient sample size.
Value- you'll pay a bit for some more of the harder finds; and you might find better deals elsewhere- but- this is the place to find the best selection. Personally, I don't mind paying a bit extra for the selection (and the fact that they're up against Wegman's down the road). Recommended!

I have been here a few times. The place has recently expanded and somewhat more organized. A clean large space with shelves/coolers on the right and back of the place. Table in the middle. Some shelves on the left and a large growler fill station with about five selections available for fill. The best selection in Northeast PA hands down. It seems if it is available in NEPA, it is here. My first complaint is the organization. I understand what they are trying to do with organizing by style but it would much easier to find things if you organized by brewery. They have deli-type food but I have never tried any but what I saw looked good.

The prices are bit absurd. Some of the beer (Pumpking for example) is almost $3.00 more than Wegman's up the road. The 3 French Hens ($15.99 at Krugels) is $5.49 more than Jessup Beverage ($10.50.) If you go expect to pay more for everything. Hit up Sabatini's, Jessup Beverage or Wegman's first. If they don't have it, stop here but be prepared to spend more than you wanted to or more than anywhere else within 100 miles.

Q- The place is a nice store alot of room and alot of beer. And they do a beer tasting every Friday which is cool too.

S- Service is very helpful and friendly always helping me make good selection even though I know what I want.

S- They have a very large and broad selection. Stuff I can't find at other places. Which is a plus for this store in my book to find stuff.

V- Although having a broad and large selection does come at a price not to high from other beer places but alittle high on some of there selection that you can find $2 to $3 cheaper.

Krugel's has easily become one of the top two or three bottle shops in NEPA. I'd say the selection is as Sabatini's, if not better, and it's definitely better than both Jessup Beverage and Purv's. They seem to routinely score new releases before anyone else around, and they also occasionally have local stuff from Breaker Brewing and Bethlehem BrewWorks when it makes it into bottles. They have an excellent selection of 6 and 4 packs as well as bombers and 750mls. Solid import selection, very good craft selection - pretty much anything that gets distributed in NEPA has a good chance of showing up here. They also have a mixed 6 pack for $10.99 and a decent selection of singles to choose from to fill it. That's always a nice option.

Someone typically approaches me to see if I need any help when I visit, which is a good thing because probably the only real problem I have with this place is that it's poorly organized. There's no logical organization beyond bombers/750s going together and 6 packs arranged in a sort of pyramid on the floor; some stuff is buried in cases where you can't see it, so if you don't ask you won't find it. That's a bit of a pain in the butt, but oh well. Prices aren't bad but they're maybe just a touch on the high sidle - I'd say a lot of 6 packs are about $1 more than you'll pay at Wegmans, and similarly with bombers/750s, but that's more than made up for by the selection. Prices are also clearly marked on packages and bottles which is definitely a plus.

All in all this place is absolutely worth a stop; for me it's quite a bit out of the way, but I make sure to swing by when I'm in the area. You should too.
