I had picked this up on a recent visit to The Foodery (Northern Liberties) and put it aside while emptying bottles that had built up, but it is time to get back to The CANQuest (TM).

From the CAN: "We strive to honor personal craftsmanship. Our handcrafted beer is made in small batches to ensure quality and peak freshness. Brewed and CANned by Old Forge Brewing Company, Danville, PA."; "Overbite India Pale Ale is an Ameri[CAN] IPA with bug malt character giving perfect balance to the abundance of Pacific Northwest hops."; "Forging Better Beer".

The Crack was music to my ears and the inverted Glug was a sight to behold. I created a finger of thick, tawny head with good retention. Color was a deep coppery-amber with NE-quality clarity. Nose was minty, like winter in an evergreen forest. Listen, do you hear it?!? It's a screeching goldang monkey and it's on my back! I am not a hophead, I am a hop addict and beers like this only feed my addiction. Mouthfeel was medium but the searing bite of the hops was working to scrub away all of the weak and dead or dying taste buds on my tongue so that I could more thoroughly enjoy the taste. My heart was thumping like it wanted to burst from my chest and I covered my ears to try and drown out the monkey's howling. It began to worm its way into my tongue like a drop of hydrofluoric acid. I was reaching for a pair of pliers with which to extract my burning tongue from my head when suddenly a rush of euphoria hit me like an oncoming train and I fell over backwards from my chair. I felt the monkey crush underneath my weight and I took a deep breath. It was like a menthol inhaler. What malt?!? This was hops, baby! The finish was cool and minty and I decided to forgo mouthwash this evening. Let's do this again real soon.

I almost forgot to mention - another word for an overbite is "a malocclusion" and there was nothing mal- about this beer.

A-yellow gold with an almost complete lack of head which I find disturbing.

S-really strong scent of hops with a mix of citrus and herbs. Fairly malty. Good scent.

T-comes in with a taste of herbs and hops and grains. It's a strong flavor which I like. It's a straightforward flavor with out any sub flavors and lasts in to a nice long lasting after-taste.

M-medium creamy carbonation with a creamy finish

O-this is a pretty fair IPA. I'm surprised its scores aren't higher. The flavors could be more hoppy and fresh. There could be more bitterness. But it's drinkability is key here. I could have many cans of this.

A: Rustic orange with a fair clarity and a medium sense of effervesce within. The head is foamy and large, peanut shell colored, porous, with a fair rate of retention. Large, spongy dabs of lace with a modest coverage. Good overall.

S: Sweet sugary grains, sugar coated fresh grapefruit. Citrus, stalky with a fair strength.

T: Flavor is sweet upfront, small toasted nature, turning to aa musky, old stale citrus of hops. Seems to be turning. The sweetness in the beginning is almost intoreable. The hops do seem to get a little better and tolerable with depth, but honestly seem to be a bit sour and old, stale, with a very flat line of complexity.

M: Ok carbonation, some alcohol laced stale citrus/lime with a warmth of alcohol.

O: Overall feels a bit old, musky, overally sweet at first, with a coarse helping of hops that dont seem to blend well, very rough around the edges, not particularly tasty, just rough. Pass, no bottling info, maybe an old can? Could be better on draft? Roll the dice on a single, dont bet on a sixpack, craps.

A big thanks goes out to woodychandler for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a brown/orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of hops, some citrus. Taste is well balanced, hops, malts, some citrus, easy drinking. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality beer.

Old Forge Overbite IPA
16 oz. can, no apparent freshness dating
$2.69 @ Beer Heaven, Philadelphia, PA

Appearance: Clear deep amber body with a bit of an orange-ish cast. Creamy off-white head. Head retention and lacing are good.

Aroma: Hoppy! Citrus (grapefruit, tangerine) and light pine. Somewhat floral as well.

Taste: As expected, hoppy but balanced by a nice, golden-caramel malt base. Solidly bitter. Dry finish with fading, grassy hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Gently crisp carbonation.

Overall: A pretty impressive IPA. It's not so much what it is, as what it isn't. It isn't overdone with hops, and the malt base is kept straight-forward. Nicely balanced and well-rounded.

Was happy to find this one in about the only place I would expect to on my side of the state. Not sure if it is mildly past its prime, but it's still nice. Good body and flavor profile that stays consistent. Not coming off as a hop bomb, and that's fine. Still has a hearty flavor. Carbonation seems too high. But overall, it's a nice one. Glad to be able to get a chance to try it.

Poured from 16oz. can into a snifter. No idea how old this thing is, local bottle shop just got it so hoping relatively fresh.

Appears a brilliant light ruby red, amber, translucent color with a nearly all white head, about a finer or so deep. Head dissipates leaving some lacing, which is thickly-webbed. Non-existent layer of white head remains on surface. The color and crispness of the appearance is reminiscent of some of my favorite IPAs, so nice start for Overbite IPA.

Smell's like it's a bit aged, not much, but not as fresh as I'd like (I assume?). It's bright and crisp, with light notes of malt, tart, and sweetness. Gotta be some citrus in there as well, I guess grapefruit. Not bad.

Taste follows the nose. But I get this nice ESB flavor to it that reminds me of another style, with bitterness. It't got malt, it's got character, it's sweet and hoppy, it's really very interesting -- not amazing but I do like it. Citrus certainly in there somewhere.

Feel evolves as it warms. At first biting and sharp, but that gives way to a creamier, albeit still bitter, experience. It's very dry, as well. Likey.

Overall this is a unique beer which required me to "work" with it as it managed to change over time. By the end of Overbite, I was really enjoying it; it's unique and I would guess experience to fully enjoy it. It's worth a try and probably slightly better than reviews. Cheers.

Thanks to ClockworkOrange for gifting me with a pint can of this. Poured into a standard pint, the brew appears a clear copper color with a fluffy tan cap. Some streaming bubbles support the cap which lasts with solid retaining powers and produces a webby pattern of lace on the glass.

The aroma is citrus and rindy with a fruit inclusion and floral hop aspects. A little herbal and almost cheesy with a bit solvent alcohol and toasty to bready grain keeps things in balance.

The taste is herbal almost minorly medicinal with some solvent alcohol. Fruity rinds and a touch of floral to perfune-like character. It is modest with its bitterness with a faint toasty to bready grain character leading a base for the hops to play off.

This is a medium boded brew with a modest level of carbonation. It is overall pretty decent and the price is right to pick this up. Oversll this is no revolution in a can but it is a well made, affordable local offering that I would have again. Thanks for sharing Jason.

$2.25 tall boy can from Abe's.

Crystal clear copper, topped by two level fingers of slightly off-white micro bubbles. Good lacing.

Grapefruit aroma with a touch of orange and peach.

Big extra sweet malt foundation. An orchard of juicy fruit. Bitter finish, not a bite, but a slow lingering that outlasts everything else.

Satisfactory mouthfeel with a bit of prickliness.

A satisfying, solid IPA.

16oz can poured into a tulip pint glass.

Appearance
Crystal clean golden orange with 2+ fingers worth of white head that dissipates slowly. Moderate carbonation.

Nose
Papaya, orange citrus, lemon, pine, caramel and candy sugar.

Taste
Sugar coated orange slices, papaya and drops of pineapple juice. Caramel candies, candy sugars and suggestions of toffee. Finishes with grapefruit zest, lemon zest and onion. Residual sugars and resinous pine linger.

Mouthfeel
Medium-full bodied, crisp and dry.

Overall
For being big on the malts, this IPA still has some seriously bitter bite. A good American IPA, but perhaps a little bit too sugary and I caught some onion flavors toward the finish.

First time try for this Northeast Pa. brewery. Drank from 16oz can poured into appropriate glass. Very pleasantly surprised. Great Taste. Grapefruit notes with a touch of blood orange at the end. The hop presence is definetly there, but still maintains a nice balance. Very Fresh. Very reasonably priced with 16oz can a plus.

This beer poured out as a nice burnt orange color with a solid looking white head on top. The retention and lacing as strong on this one. The smell of the beer is fresh and hoppy smelling. There are some subtle malt aromas but not much. The taste is nicely balanced with citrusy pine hops and a sweetness from the malt. The mouthfeel is smooth, gently carbonated and very drinkable. Overall it's a pretty solid IPA, can't find much to dislike about this one.

Poured out of can into snifter. I knew nothing of this brewey beforehand. No date on can, bummer. I was a littler leary of buying an IPA w/o a date. I got lucky! It did not taste old at all - quite fresh. Great hop aroma (citrus and mostly pine). Flavor is that of other fresh IPAs. Firm bitterness and great hop flavor. Mouthfeel is perfect, not too thin and not too heavy. I'm drinking this as my first beer of the day and I am pleasantly surpised. Go out and try some!

Aroma is fantastic. I'm pleasently surprized at the offerings so far from Old Forge although this is only my second from them. But man what a second.
This brew has a big hop bouquet of citrus and pine with some easy malts backing up.
The appearance though is a bit wanting. A small head. The head fast receeded to a simple collar, though that collar lasted a long while. The pure amber color is crystal clear.
Taste is bold and assertive as like most of the well known WCIPA'a. hops have a floral taste. Malts have a bready doughy taste towards the end making for me a well balanced taste. Smooth drinking clean with a bitter aftertaste.
Ranks right there with sculpin and furious though needs alittle help in rentention.
Posted here first I think Old Forge is going to be a PA powerhouse.

First had: on tap at Old Forge

Clear amber pour, with a half inch or so of foamy white head, that receded to a ringlet, leaving some lacing on the glass. Nice aroma of citrus and pine hops. Likewise in the taste, hops are up front, citrus zest, with lesser notes of pine and grass, mild bitterness, backed by a solid biscuity malt base. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Good IPA. Definitely the best beer I had at the brewpub.

A: Pours a medium amber into the glass with a long lasting beige head. The only detractor in appearance is a slight chill haze.

S: CASCADE!!!! Big time cascade aroma followed by the carmel/malty aromas.

T: A sweet maltiness is offset by the bittering and flavoring hops. Nice hoppy aftertaste. The malt does linger but plays second-fiddle to the hops.

M: A nice medium body. Not too thin, lets you know something is there. No carbonation "bite", just well carbonated and balanced.

D: Very!!! If you like the American IPA style, this beer is for you.

Overall, they hit style with this beer. It is a must for fans of IPAs with a lot of cascade flavor. As I said earlier, the only detractor is the slight chill haze. I would and will drink this again.

Tried from a can tonight. Just as good as from the growler. Only difference is no chill haze.
