A trendy place, hipsters to bikers. A friendly place, with opportunities to strike up conversations with tables tightly spaced. With all the taps, you still have locals comment that there may not be one beer on to have that day. On a main street and in a growing craft beer neighbourhood in the heart of JA.. I had a few good stouts, and Brian caught up to his Narwhal. Good service.Prices reasonable.

I stopped by here for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon, early. The place was already starting to get filled up and by the time I left, it was half full. They are doing some remodelling or expansion so unfortunately, they only had like 10 or 15 drafts instead of the normal 60. The drafts they did have seemed to be pretty stellar. For some reason, they still had Pumpking? Others included Southern Tier and some others.
One complaint I do have is the bar area. When you first walk in, there is a bar directly in front of you. The problem with this bar is that the tap line or draft tower is directly at ey level and is about 1 foot in height. So, in order to converse with the bartender, one has to either stand up in ones stool or become the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Very annoying and something like that shouldnt happen at a nice bar. The rest of the place seemed pretty cool. Dark and dungeon like but no dwarves or wraiths or anything.
The food was delcious. I ordered the smothered chicken and it was some sort of Italian based dish with feta and tomato sauce and red peppers and dried tomatoes and it was delicious. If there werent some brown lettuce leaves and "clear" cucumbers in the salad, I would have given the food a 5. Edit: After reading some of the reviews, I find it hard to believe not many people have had good food here. Mine was delicious, FWIW.
I didnt require much service, just the food and water. If they do something about that draft tower, this place would be alot better. WIth that behemoth in the way, I wouldnt come back. Even though the food was great, I cant deal with the no-eye-contact thing.

Went here on a Friday night. Warning...if you are in any kind of hurry for food or seating, do not go here on a Friday or Saturday evening. Waiting 45 minutes for a table to sit and eat was the only detractor from this joint. The place is great, with a ton of outdoor seating, and when you walk in there is beer stuff all over the place, including, but not limited to, an endless amount of taps attached to the ceiling, old school tap towers, bottles hanging from the walls, beer signs, etc. The staff was very exceptional, and extremely knowledgable about all of their products, which is impressive given the 88 beer taplist they had going that evening. I didn't even ask about the bottles. The food menu is pretty decent, and they have a section called "Old School" that includes Hamburger Helper, PB&J, alphabet soup, etc. Pretty slick. And, they have mac and cheese for a side that has bacon on top of it...delish! Anyway, this place is a must go if you are in JAX...trust me. The prices weren't bad at all, and you could drink there for weeks and not get around to all the beers. Can't wait to go back!!

Great atmosphere and an overhwelming selection of beer. They have 60 beers on tap and a new 99 bottles of beer selection. The food is exceptional for a local pub. They refer to themselves as a gastropub because of the high level of food quality. By far the best place in Jacksonville for beer slection. Not even close.... Prices are low to normal. Food is reasonably priced for the quality and they even have a "vintage menu" for fun which shows spaghetti O's, ramen noodles, and fluffernutter sandwiches. Very creative!
This is becoming one of the best beer in the country. Yes.... I said it!

Had dinner here while in town for work. They were under construction at the time of my visit, so their normally extensive tap list was down to about 21 or so...still very good. Terrapin WNB and Hopzilla, Hoppin Frog Boris Oatmeal, McChouffe, Bells Two Hearted, Souther Tier Oaked Backburner and Pumking?...Sixpoint Apollo, Orkney Skull Splitter, Schneider Sommer, Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat, Hoegaarden, and some others I don't remember. The bottle list was quite huge...they had a page of wilds and sours that looked god - and all reasonably priced. But on the 2 bottles I asked for, they were out of stock on both...so maybe its not that big...
Also, you can download their App for a tap list.
The atmosphere is weird - a hodgepodge of random décor and furniture, tons of glassware and tap handles on the ceiling, all dusty and grimy, crumbs on the stained cushioned bar stools, and weird peeps loitering at the front door. It was fairly empty at 5:00 on a Monday.
Quality is a hard one - while the selection was very good, I did notice a the bartender taking a lot of shortcuts...like simply rinsing dusty and dirty glasses from the bar top to quickly serve in instead of just cleaning all the glasses... (actually served a dirty glass to the person sitting next to me)...also , I hate when they use a second cup to collect the foam, then pour it into the beer you order to top off...it just seems wrong - and there is likely some beer science on how that affects the flavor also.
The service was great - super nice bartender and food runners, chatty but not annoying and very attentive.
The food was pretty tasty. I had a tempeh burger; while it would probably not be many peoples first choice, it was pretty good for what it is - and I think it was "local" to Gainesville.
Prices were pretty good overall...about $5 on average for a draft during happy hour - while some others were closer to $9 like the BORIS Destroyer Oatmeal and the McChouffe.
Overall, while grimy and somewhat gross...id go back if im ever back in JAX...especially after their "expansion" is complete.

2012: after last issue, we will never set foot in the place again. many like it. Why I never know. it aint the food.
Nov 2011: Nothing has changed, same place, same seats. oh pool table is gone, I think, have to check the tape.
April 2011: If this is a world class place, then I will eat something they make, the food is worse than Mc donalds. But you got to feed the wife, so we endure. It's mostly miss, sometimes its decent. Beer is too expensive for me now. But as much as I hate the prices, I always go back, who else has this much beer in 1 place, no 1.
DEC 2010: Finally hit a beer dinner: First off its a bargain price for all that beer. I did expect the food to be higher quality, but for that little kitchen and all those folks I guess they do a decent job. That said the food was so/so, again at that price for all that beer
Nov 2010: prices gone up $6.95 for half pours of 8% abv, sadly priced me out of those beers. Chairs are getting worse. I love to Chat with Steve and all that, but the place is a dive bar. With 84 TAPS! needless to say we were there 3 times in NOV LOL go figure.
Sep 2010: 84 taps, You got to love the owner Steve, he is the best!!! Food still needs some love, when its not a beer dinner, but the beer is fresh, and I could care less about glasses, my only knock is the pints are 14oz, measured them this time. The seats suck, other than that if it was a tad cheaper I be in there even more. But one has to charge what it takes to stay in biz, I get that. I am just poor. Fix the seats.
Service is gotten much better, still its not a perfect place but its still number 1 in jax. Steve get new comfortable chairs and you will have to run me out as it is after 2 hours we cannot stand sitting there anymore. So no beer sold if we aint there, LOL food is still hit or miss, but its cheap. jokes, too expensive to stay over 1 hour now.
New menu's Nice. was not offered bottle list, but that's ok.
My food was a little better, the wife is a tad picky and was not too happy but cannot please everyone.
Beer list is decent on draft, and its getting better every visit. The bottle selection is very very good, Steve gets stuff in that I only seen in either Belgium or big USA cities. Oh course I mean Belgian beer only.
Services was much better this time, with nice attention to detail and a nice suggestion of a new beer.
Jul 23, 2009:
Service was a tad slow after the first beer I was let sitting there for 20 minutes without a visit (big no no), in her defense there were only 2 bartenders and not sure if there were actually any other wait staff on duty. I think it was maybe the after lunch lull.
One thing they need is t-shirts or something so you know who works there.
It was 3pm when we came in and maybe because we sat on the other side of the place we are not sure. Things picked up service wise after saying hello TO Steve, not sure if that mattered or not.
The pub food varied from decent, to not all that great, passable for pub food. The beer though, and the really only reason I visit for anyway was in Excellent condition.
I guess we should have been more honest about the food, but we did not want to knock them. its sad on other visits the food was better. If we go back it will just be for beer, the food is ok but you get what you pay for I guess. Some Appetizers are first rate, the other stuff not so much, I asked what was good but I did not get an answer.
Still the seating is a tad cramped, and a tad hard for my fat ass. Theses are honest thoughts from me and the wife. So go for beer and live music.
Also was a tad hot in there and I wish these places could put the smokers some where else, every time they opened the door the smoke came in with them which is hard on the poor wife.
Glad to see a tap list posted finally. with prices that rocks, still they do that stupid half pour thing on the high abv, but I guess everyone is doing that shit now, it still bugs the hell out of me, but I will try to get over it.
1st visit:I am reviewing this place just to get it known how decent it is. Now our first visit was on the Bell's hopslam roll out so the place was over packed. That said we checked out the 60 taps and yep, that's what we counted. We had a few beers from the draft selection. They were great. the Bottle selection is also excellent, but pricey on some stuff. It's a cozy corner pub / restaurant. These folks are open from 7am to 3am every day crazy stuff. I love places that open before 4pm, this one my just reset to my favorite place in Jacksonville, it will of course take more beer research there to confirm. sadly I am sure we will run out of cash first.
The owner rocks and is very nice person.
the parking sucks.

The crowd is certainly very mixed and variable. The selection is incredible. I usually go and have had a third of the 84 beers that are on tap. Few other compare. Of those on draft the genres and selections are excellent and broad. There is no place else in Jacksonville that comes even close to te number of taps and broad range of breweries covered. The prices are reasonable but some of these beers are pricey to get ahold of therefore that cost makes some expensive. The food is actually a lot better than I expected. They have a nice selection. Overall you won't be disappointed if you are looking fr new beers to try and the food is good enough to go for more than just beer

Recently took a much needed winter break and relief from a very snowy Pennsylvania and flew to Jacksonville to visit family.
I had the opportunity to head out to Kickbacks for some beers and a bite to eat on a Saturday evening around 5:30 pm. My experience there was exceptional. Being the only beer conscious person in the group, I figured the rest of my party was not going to be thrilled by the fact that this gastropub had 60 offerings on tap. Also, an additional wall full of bottled beers was available for you to choose from if nothing from the tap lineup tickled your fancy.
Remarkably enough, the non-beer loving folks in my group were thrilled that "beer could be this good" and this trip to Kickbacks ended up being the much talked about highlight of the trip. Steve was very eager to make recommendations and give samples to encourage the curious individuals who were interested in beer but didn't know anything about it. He was very professional and eager to talk beer which is always welcomed.
The food...wow. Very reasonably priced, nice sized portions (ok they are quite large portions) and so tasty. I went to this place with a major interest in the beer selection and ended up leaving equally wowed by the food.
It is a place that I will certainly continue to visit each time I return to Jacksonville. According to Steve, the place is a work in progress and he looks forward to improve upon it with regular beer and food pairings and expanding the draft options. The only downfall, if you want to call it that, is the all too common increasing noise volue as the evening progressed. Saturday was busy and it got increasingly louder to the point where it was a bit difficult to hold a conversation at a normal voice level.

Ok, so it's not every day I come across a bar that I wish I could go to everyday, but Kickbacks definitely is! I should preface this review by saying that I beermailed Steve ahead of time and told him I was stopping by from Minneapolis. He answered my beermail and told me to meet him there when I got in town, I mean, what bar owner wants to meet fellow beer fanatics?! The answer = great restaurant/bar owners.
The atmosphere is great, you walk in to a full faced view of 60 something beers on tap, ranging from the typical BMC to the deep end of the pool IPA's and RIS's. The people were extremely friendly and helpful. Steve even took me on a tour of the entire bar and the keg "cellar". The selection of beers was great! Steve's attitude is to have a few BMC but then have a great choice of gateway beers for people to expand their beer horizons if they choose. The menu was robust and even included Hamburger Helper if you want to go old school, totally awesome.
Again, there are very few bars I go out of my way to go to but Kickbacks is definitely one of them. Really wish this was a bar I had back in MN.

Kickbacks is THE location for your key destination in beerbar and/or rare beer to go while visiting Jacksonville. Huge variety of drafts (80+ taps), an endless bottle reserve, and a fun chill vibe with knowledgable staff. If they dont have want you want, just ask, they might, and if they dont they can suggest a plan b. Steve the owner is passionate about beer, rarities, and people who appreciatte the beer culture in general.
Atmosphere is a laid back dive bar meets beer shrine/museum. Bottle collections hang from the walls on retro steel pipe rigs. Tap handles are displayed as pseudo art meets functional use. Dark overstocked bar and dining area feel makes you feel like you are in a unique place for sure. You have to talk to the bartenders through a massive tap tower. All these quirks are a complement and part of the character. Embrace it, this is a legendary venue for sure.
Quality & Food is top notch for the context. Lines are always clean. A variety of glassware is available. If you have any concerns, requests, or desires, just ask - they will take care of you. Food is "upscale" bar food. Can't do fried buffalo chicken or jalopeno poppers? well then get the chicken cordon bleu - its AWESOME!
Service - is top notch. Very knowledgable staff who are obviously well trained or prime candidates for the job. Staff and service matters to this place - and it shows. I hear this as a recurring theme from any who visit Kickbacks THE Mecca of beer and beer culture in Florida.
Selection is over the top for our area and possibly the region. 80+ taps last time I checked. Clean lines. A black hole of a bottle reserve - if you want something very special just ask you can lose yourself in the options.
Also of note the beer dinners are EPIC. The last one included 80+ Rogue beers on tap with a multi course paired dinner with transportation included.
If you are in NE FL, or Southern Georgia, you have to make it to Kickbacks.
If you live in the Jacksonville area, make this your local as it is the place to be for rare beer and true beer geek nourishment.
