Unfortunately we live in St. Augustine, so we don't get up here as often as we like. That being said, we make the effort when Steve throws a beer dinner. Monday night we went to his Unibroue beer dinner. For seven course of outstanding food and 15, yes 15 beer tastings for $59 plus tax and gratuity you can not get a better deal.
I've seen their little kitchen and the quality of the food that comes out of there is amazing.
On this night there were probably 70 or so people in for the dinner and you could tell by the smiles and contentment that all were pleased.
Was it cramped, yes. But for a pub, it should be expected.
I understand Steve is planning to add in even more taps. The selection is already outstanding and he delights in surprising you with his unusual finds. Case in point at the beer dinner, he managed to sway Unibroue into providing a vertical tasting of Unibroue 14 (2005), Unibroue 15 (2006), Unibroue 16 (2007), and Unibroue 17 (2008). They were all simply amazing and complex and you can't get them at the store. They finished with a Quelque Chose served both on the rocks (1999 vintage) and warmed (2002 vintage) to show the versality of the beer. Who'd thunk you could enjoy a hot beer so much?
Locals love this place because it is open like 21 hours a day and they deliver food which is great for all the shift work people in the area.
If you are in Jacksonville any of these dates, make sure you attend one of these beer dinners. You will not be disappointed but if your travels bring you some other day -stop in for a beer or two and I doubt you will be regret it.
Next beer dinners:
September 7th with Cigar City (new brewery in Tampa)
October 5th with Sierra Nevada
November 9th with Highland Brewing

Hands down, one of the premier gastropubs in America. I recently visited HopCat in Grand Rapids, MI (considered to be in the top 5 beer bars in the US) and Kickbacks blows it away in all aspects.
Steve (Proprieter) is not only friendly and knowledgeable, but well-versed in the complexities of bar management and handling the beer market (supply, distributors, competition). He knows his stuff, and that's why breweries send their best to him.
The food is well above expectation and never disappoints. The beer selection continues to grow in both offering and quality every week.
If you've ever wanted to try aged (bottled) beers, unique casked ales or anything relatively obscure - Kickbacks is the place to go.
My only regret is that I live too far away to go every day.

About a month ago, we decided to check out the beer scene in Jacksonville which is about 250 miles from our house in SE AL. We found a reasonable B&B in the historic St. John's river area close to the Bold City Brewery. First, we didn't know the brewery existed until the innkeepers told us to check it out. We drove a few blocks to the place, but they weren't open till the next day. On our way back, we saw Kickbacks , parked our car and walked the 2 blocks from the Inn. We opened the door and our mouths dropped when we saw the taps. Remember, we live in AL so anything is amazing. However, this was by far, the greatest selection we had ever seen.
We got comfortable and started ordering beers and knew there were too many choices and that we would be there awhile. The waitress was knowledgeable and when she found out how much we knew about beer she sent over Steve, the owner. As has been stated before, he is a gracious host and spent a very long time talking beer with us.
We ordered a few appetizers which were very good and had a wonderful desert. All the food I saw looked great and we were stunned by the 7 page menu. They serve breakfast all day during their long hours of operation.
This was a wonderful place to happen upon and can not wait to go back.
Addendum: Second Visit
Went to Jacksonville again this weekend (7/24-26/09) to judge at a beer competition. Of course, we had to visit Kickbacks again. This time we brought a professional brewer/brewery consultant/close friend with us, the look on his face was precious as we sat down and started or order our first beer.
If anything the beer selection on tap had improved, as if that were possible. We started with a Gouden Carolus on tap - much more delicate than the bottle version. Since the bottle selection is so incredible also we followed with and Amadeus Wit (fascinating ferment character) with dinner/breakfast (they serve both all the time). and ended the evening with a spectacular barley wine. The service was incredible, the wit was served from a corked and caged bottle with the greatest of care and class, the likes of which I thought only occurred in my own home.
Our friend quickly agreed that this was the best beer bar that he or we and ever encountered. We can now say that Kickbacks is consistent, food, beer, service, atmosphere, good time.

Kickbacks is probably the best bar in the Jacksonville area. They have a great selection of beers that is not matched by anyone else in town. The owner is a Beer Advocate and he tries his hardest to get new and different beers constantly. He seems to have good relationships with many people in the beer industry and this seems to help bring in new products and allow him to do outstanding beer dinners. I highly recommend this bar. Unfortunately, it was not near where lived but that is probably a good thing or I would have never left. Some of the servers really care about beer as well but some still have some learning to do but they try and that's what really matters to me. Hell, I can't pronounce every beer name and remember all the proper glassware. But there are plenty of people there that do know beer so expect the beer to be served with the appropriate glassware. The food is pretty good, and the menu has many selections, even PB&J if you feel that will pair well with the beer you have. Many TVs for your viewing pleasure and typically some good music playing. An eccentric and diverse crowd at times but I'm sure everyone can fit in around there. I always enjoy going there to try something new and see what beers and events are coming up. If you are in the area, then stop in and have a beer.

It looks as you would expect from a neighborhood, college style bar. A little tight on the seating situation, but I can't fault them for it. The service has been sketchy at times, others excellent I have ran out of beer and had to flag down the waitress, but that is not common. As for their selection... the only thing keeping them from a 5 is the draft, which isn't shabby either. Their beer selection is mecca-like. I have finally had an opportunity to try Arrogant Bastard thanks to this place and that beer is the BOMB! They have beers that you cannot find in Jacksonville, FL. The prices are good, the food is ok, nothing fantastic, but who gives a bump on food when the beer is so awesome?

2012: after last issue, we will never set foot in the place again. many like it. Why I never know. it aint the food.
Nov 2011: Nothing has changed, same place, same seats. oh pool table is gone, I think, have to check the tape.
April 2011: If this is a world class place, then I will eat something they make, the food is worse than Mc donalds. But you got to feed the wife, so we endure. It's mostly miss, sometimes its decent. Beer is too expensive for me now. But as much as I hate the prices, I always go back, who else has this much beer in 1 place, no 1.
DEC 2010: Finally hit a beer dinner: First off its a bargain price for all that beer. I did expect the food to be higher quality, but for that little kitchen and all those folks I guess they do a decent job. That said the food was so/so, again at that price for all that beer
Nov 2010: prices gone up $6.95 for half pours of 8% abv, sadly priced me out of those beers. Chairs are getting worse. I love to Chat with Steve and all that, but the place is a dive bar. With 84 TAPS! needless to say we were there 3 times in NOV LOL go figure.
Sep 2010: 84 taps, You got to love the owner Steve, he is the best!!! Food still needs some love, when its not a beer dinner, but the beer is fresh, and I could care less about glasses, my only knock is the pints are 14oz, measured them this time. The seats suck, other than that if it was a tad cheaper I be in there even more. But one has to charge what it takes to stay in biz, I get that. I am just poor. Fix the seats.
Service is gotten much better, still its not a perfect place but its still number 1 in jax. Steve get new comfortable chairs and you will have to run me out as it is after 2 hours we cannot stand sitting there anymore. So no beer sold if we aint there, LOL food is still hit or miss, but its cheap. jokes, too expensive to stay over 1 hour now.
New menu's Nice. was not offered bottle list, but that's ok.
My food was a little better, the wife is a tad picky and was not too happy but cannot please everyone.
Beer list is decent on draft, and its getting better every visit. The bottle selection is very very good, Steve gets stuff in that I only seen in either Belgium or big USA cities. Oh course I mean Belgian beer only.
Services was much better this time, with nice attention to detail and a nice suggestion of a new beer.
Jul 23, 2009:
Service was a tad slow after the first beer I was let sitting there for 20 minutes without a visit (big no no), in her defense there were only 2 bartenders and not sure if there were actually any other wait staff on duty. I think it was maybe the after lunch lull.
One thing they need is t-shirts or something so you know who works there.
It was 3pm when we came in and maybe because we sat on the other side of the place we are not sure. Things picked up service wise after saying hello TO Steve, not sure if that mattered or not.
The pub food varied from decent, to not all that great, passable for pub food. The beer though, and the really only reason I visit for anyway was in Excellent condition.
I guess we should have been more honest about the food, but we did not want to knock them. its sad on other visits the food was better. If we go back it will just be for beer, the food is ok but you get what you pay for I guess. Some Appetizers are first rate, the other stuff not so much, I asked what was good but I did not get an answer.
Still the seating is a tad cramped, and a tad hard for my fat ass. Theses are honest thoughts from me and the wife. So go for beer and live music.
Also was a tad hot in there and I wish these places could put the smokers some where else, every time they opened the door the smoke came in with them which is hard on the poor wife.
Glad to see a tap list posted finally. with prices that rocks, still they do that stupid half pour thing on the high abv, but I guess everyone is doing that shit now, it still bugs the hell out of me, but I will try to get over it.
1st visit:I am reviewing this place just to get it known how decent it is. Now our first visit was on the Bell's hopslam roll out so the place was over packed. That said we checked out the 60 taps and yep, that's what we counted. We had a few beers from the draft selection. They were great. the Bottle selection is also excellent, but pricey on some stuff. It's a cozy corner pub / restaurant. These folks are open from 7am to 3am every day crazy stuff. I love places that open before 4pm, this one my just reset to my favorite place in Jacksonville, it will of course take more beer research there to confirm. sadly I am sure we will run out of cash first.
The owner rocks and is very nice person.
the parking sucks.

Great atmosphere and an overhwelming selection of beer. They have 60 beers on tap and a new 99 bottles of beer selection. The food is exceptional for a local pub. They refer to themselves as a gastropub because of the high level of food quality. By far the best place in Jacksonville for beer slection. Not even close.... Prices are low to normal. Food is reasonably priced for the quality and they even have a "vintage menu" for fun which shows spaghetti O's, ramen noodles, and fluffernutter sandwiches. Very creative!
This is becoming one of the best beer in the country. Yes.... I said it!
