Bottle to Lawson's sniffer
A:Dark chestnut brown with some ruby redness around the outside and darker then cloudy, but not totally opaque. There is a thin tan head that leaves a thin lacing that goes around the outside.
S: lots of malt that hints of sweetness not too much else there
T: follows the nose with a sweetness in the malt it isn't quite roasted but definitely more toward caramel. There is is almost some hop character pretty drinkable
M: crisp and rather oily it is light and thin goes down easy bit not much character
O:I don't normally drink this style but this wasn't that bad I wouldn't go back but if its your thing seems worth a try regardless goes down fast for the abv so there is that

Deep rich mahogany red pour with 1.5 fingers of light cream head. Heavy lace and light retention. Gorgeous color.
Nose is very sweet. More red ale than scotch, though. Get more candied cherries than the earthy peat and tea flavors I like in this style.
Flavor is too sweet as well. Again with the candied fruit. Thick syrup coats the tongue and throat. Peat is trying to sneak through all that sweetness, but this comes across more as a winter warmer than a scotch ale to me.
Feel is very thick and rich. Heavy syrup.
For the style, I think they missed on this one. Love the brewery, just not this beer.

A - Mahogany with tiny cream head, little lacing.
S - Woody, earthy, oak
T - A bit boozy and unfinished. A hearty profile of sweet caramel, but an abbreviated finish. Some toasted notes, but lacks some complexity and a bit light on the ABV
M- Creaminess and I applaud the light carbonation allowing the flavors to come forward
Not a typical - nor above average - wee heavy. But a solid attempt and Certainly a couple will warm you on a cool night.

A- Poured into standard pint glass. Dark brown with a thin head that quickly dissipated.
S- mild fruity aroma
T- tastes just like it should. Rich, fruity and roasty. Alcohol is not apparent. Really full flavor as it warms.
M- Good carbonation level but could be a little smoother. There is a bit of a bite from the sweetness.
O- one of Devil's Backbone's best offerings. Not trying to be anything other than a solid example of the style.

A: Pours a very deep dark amber-brown with a above average thin head of foam on top. Dark beige colored head dissipating quickly. The body is really nice -- slightly hazy, but you can see through it. There is some sediment in the body. I used to like sediment, but now I'm digging a cleaner body. This is above average appearance.
S: Smell some vanilla, dark fruits, oakiness, dark malts -- something like a dark belgian ale. Does smell really good -- something like a Barleywine -- just wish the aroma wasn't as subtle as it is.
T: Yeah -- dark fruits and vanilla is sticking out the most. Nice warm feeling going down. Semi-refreshing finish. Some sweet, caramel malts coming through too. I like the flavor, I just wish there was more of it. What's there is good, though.
M: Nice carbonation. Medium body. Not exactly smooth and creamy. Little bit of a bite here. Slightly buttery feel. Nice chewiness, though. Hit or miss feel, to be honest.
O: This brew hits where it counts -- in the smell and taste. And, for that I gotta say I'm pretty impressed. Been meaning to drink Devil's Backbone stuff. Being in VA, I'm really rooting for it. Nice offering here.

12oz bottle poured into my Three Floyd's glass. Deep copper color with a thin white head scattered across the top. Nice looking color.
Aroma has notes of caramel and toffee with a little bit of dark fruit presence to it. Pretty nice showcasing of the malts in the aroma without being overly sweet.
The taste follows with more of the caramel and toffee flavors to it. The dark fruits come out more in the finish along with some hop bitterness. Relatively well balanced for the style.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being on the high side of the style. Overall, it's a pretty good version of the style. The malt flavors were nicely done and it was pretty drinkable and flavorful overall.

12oz bottle, poured into snifter glass. Note: ABV is actually 8.0%, not 7.8 as mentioned on this post.
A- Has a dark brown / reddish color, with quite a bit of foamy head. Good lacing. Not a bad looking brew.
S- Nose offers some malty caramel and spices.
T- Not at all what I expected prior to opening the bottle. This is an interesting take on the style. I do notice the common "tea" like flavoring but it comes through rather spiced, almost like a farmhouse saison or something similar. Relatively sweet, with a good mouth -- slightly carbonated, smooth, drinkable.
O- I have not been a huge fan of DB offerings so far, but this is probably the best one I have tried yet. I am reminded of a Belgian influenced Scotch Ale, if you can imagine. Now that this brewery has expanded distribution across most of VA, it would be nice to see them take a step back and think about doing some more unique, perhaps "reserve" beers (a la Blue Mountain Barrel House, just down the road). We shall wait and see! I recommend giving this one a try though!
