A deep copper colored beer, with a tidy amount of off-white foam sitting atop. Aroma is heavy on the caramel malts, with a touch of herbacious floral hops hiding behind it. A firm bitterness is followed by smooth caramel, and then bittrness finishes up the show and lingers. Pretty full bodied for an IPA. It's tasty, and more malt driven than most IPA's I have had. Drinkable for sure, but not in the way a less malty version is. Good.

A: Pours a slightly hazy dark orange to copper in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation and some amber highlights. The beer has a finger tall creamy light tan head that reduces to a thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer with a medium sized patch of medium thick head (with a lot of larger bubbles) and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Light to moderate aromas of caramel malt sweetness with some light to moderate aromas of citrus/grapefruit rind hops.
T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of caramel malts forming a foundation for the hops flavors - there is a light amount of initial sweetness that is then overtaken by the hop flavors and bitterness. Moderate to strong flavors of citrus/grapefruit rind and earthy/herbal hops. Moderate amounts of lingering bitterness.
M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Sticky with just a hint of alcohol warming in the finish.
O: I found this beer to be pretty enjoyable and easy to drink - there is only the slight hint of alcohol warming in the mouthfeel as the beer warms up which is good considering the moderately high ABV. I would get this again, especially if I get to go out on the boat again this summer.

12oz can poured into a tumbler glass.
A- a beautiful, clear dark amber, with a big creamy light tan head. Fantastic lacing.
S- Big caramel malt notes, with a bit of earthy, and almost minty hops. Way unbalanced here.
T- A flash of the huge malt bill is mainly caramel in origin, is quicky crushed by a huge bitterness. There's little hop flavor, perhaps some piney, earthy hops, but mainly just a big bitterness here.
M- a heavy medium, there's so much malt in there to attempt to balance the bitterness that it's pretty slick, which is nice.
O- A completely unbalanced brew, and that's not a complement as it may be with some brews. If they backed the bitterness off, I think it would be much more pleasant.

Best before date of 5/15/13. Poured into a nonic.
Appearance - I really like the way this looks. Dark amber color with golden-orange hues and a beautiful cream colored head that dissipates unevenly from a vigorous pour. Carbonation is a little on the low side but I think that is mostly due to the glass.
Smell - Hard to pick up much smell here, partly because my dad is trying to remove a super glue spill with lacquer in the other room and partly because of the age on the beer. I get really toasty, caramel malt and a faint waft of floral hops. The hops really have no kick or twang here. Not good for an IPA, but I think it would make for a pretty nice amber ale!
Taste - First hit by moderately sweet caramel malts with a faint fruitiness and floral character from the hops. Again, this wouldn't be a half bad amber ale, but since it is an IPA, this taste is not cutting it. It takes a few seconds after the first gulp for the bitterness to become apparent, but once it does it pretty much takes over and makes for a pretty unpleasant finish.
Mouthfeel - Aside from the lingering bitterness, the mouthfeel is pretty nice and just what I like for the style. A solid medium body with good presence on the tongue.
Overall - This one is near the end of its shelf life, which explains the lack of hop presence. The malts, even as strong as they are here, do not keep the 113 IBUs quite at bay, and that definitely detracts from the beer for me. Not a bad beer if I didn't know what they style was (blind, I would probably guess an amber), but not a good IPA.

This bottle was pretty fresh, dated 12/22/12. I poured this into a tapered glass. There was a pretty decent amount of foam from the initial pour. The foam led to some mild lacing on the glass.
The nose on this one is primarily citrus hops. The aroma is proper for a single IPA. The flavor is not as clean or as well balanced as the nose. You get more of the bitterness and metalic presence.
Overall this is a decent IPA.
