i wouldn't consider pilsen stout to be a stout at all. i suspect it's more of a black lager given its high carbonation and lack of stout-like qualities. with that in mind, and the fact that the bulk of beers available in Uruguay are of the pilsner variety, i am going to review the beer accordingly.
the beer pours very dark - almost black in color - with a small, whitish head that doesn't linger for long. like the standard Pilsen there isn't much of a nose on this guy. maybe something slightly like roasted malts but almost odorless. light body, with a bit of dark malt sweetness as it travels down the palate. also easy to drink and refreshing with minor complexity. more going on from the toasted malt than its brethren. is pilsen 'stout' worth the upcharge at the shop or bar? maybe. after drinking nothing but golden pilsners it was a welcome change.
as a stout this beer would not hold up at all. thin body, no nose, wrong texture. as a dark lager in a country that only recently added color to its beer selection it isn't bad.

A friend picked this one up for me while in Uruguay. He liked it, I didn't. It's by no means strong and doesn't have much complexity to speak of. Whenever I sipped it, all I came back with is that it tastes like a lager. It's malty with no detectable hops to balance it. Mouthfeel light-medium. The head pours so big the glass gets filled without any beer noticeable at the bottom.
This beer was something like $1.50 American he said, and for such a large bottle I suppose it's a good beer if you're hot and thirsty. But certainly not something to seek out or really even try. It didn't taste horrible, but it was an awful stout.
