Bomber to pint glass. $10.00 for the bottle.

From the website: "...the second installment of our "Once Upon a Time" historical beer series we have once again teamed up with historian Ron Pattinson of Amsterdam to recreate a beer from Britain's past."

A: A foamy/frothy head of 2 fingers with a color something like 'Red Cedar Meets Mocha.' The head deposits a sticky sheet of lace throughout its slow demise. An everlasting film remains. The body is pitch black with absolutely no clarity. Lacing from the body continues to impress. Two-thirds of the glass is coated with 100% contiguous sheets which, when dry, resemble the pointillism of a Seurat painting. I am amazed at the appearance...but not surprised; Pretty Things consistently produces excellent looking brews.

S & T: Dark malts are roasty and present strong aromas and flavors of chocolate, cereal and bread crust. Bramling Cross and Kent Goldings hops are heavy and contribute notes that are both grassy and herbal. There is a corresponding leafy yeastiness to the nose. Light scents of cardboard are detectable. The mildest fruity component is noticeably on the palate as the beer nears room temperature. The same warming also increases the already high level of bitterness. Lightly sour. Finishes dry, acrid and heavily bitter.

M: Medium body with a very minerally, gritty texture. The carbonation is fizzy and of average intensity. Light alcoholic warmth comes from the belly up.

D: This beer has great flavor and has been a pleasure to drink but long term enjoyment is nearly impossible given the dryness and lingering bitterness of this recreated old world brew.

The "k" represents a "kept" beer & glad I did just that. The appearance is a beauty, w/ a frothy beige head & deep brown hue. Smells of chocolate nougat & overripe plums. True to the label description; it's a hoppy black ale. The blending of the dark malt w/ the English hops is the key to this beer. Really digging the aftertaste. Roasted bitter chocolate sweetness on the end....the best part, because it makes you come back for more. Love this series of historical recreations.

Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is a dark, vibrant, slightly hazed, amber-brown coloring with a frothy, foamy, off-white head that starts around an inch, but quickly settles into a filmy coating. Aromas of rich toffee sweetness on a biscuit backbone, with hints of roast and old world fruit sweetness. Some raisin and fig on the nose in highlights. Flavors are roasty, also, with date, raisin, plum, and fig blending on the forward tongue. Boozy and earthy backbone, with a tangy, bitter hops presence at the end of the palate. The end of the beer becomes a bit unbalanced, leading to a bitter and astringent aftertaste, with a very dry finish. Started off promising, but this one started to spiral towards the end.
