A: Copper orange with a quickly disappearing, thin head.

S: Heavy cream and vanilla nose with nearly no hint of hops.

T: Vanilla at first then a slight hops flavor. It could be a bit stronger as the taste is fairly light. Regardless, the taste is pleasant!

M: Heavy on carbonation, but not bad. What you'd expect from a brown ale.

D: Fairly light. You can drink a bunch of these.

Overall: I expected a stronger taste since the nose is pretty heavy. But the taste is a bit lacking. It's good, but needs to be more bold and have more of a hops flavor. It's kind of forgettable.

Pours a huge, dense head that collapses into a fluffy, soapy head as best it can; surprisingly resilient. Floral hops underneath butterscotch in the nose. Golden-straw color. Starts off with a slight butterscotch/floral hoppiness, builds into a rich butterscotch flavor as the malt melds with this, and it peaks in a medium-low bitterness. Finish is malt and more butterscotch, with a touch of lingering hop bitterness.

Normally, I dislike butterscotch notes, but this is JUST hoppy enough to cut the sweetness. The butterscotch actually pairs well with the hoppiness, thought it drowns out the nuance of the hops in favor of butterscotch.
Not bad at all. I'd drink one every now and then.
If you don't like butterscotch, AVOID THIS!

Served in a Walter Payton shaker pint glass.

Breakin' into the captain's private stash... This stuff pours a clear brass topped by a relatively short-lived finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises mild orange zest, toffee, very light pine needle, and plenty of biscuit. The taste holds notes of rind-y orange zest, light biscuit, and a touch of mild vinyl. That last bit really hurts this beer. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, an okay EIPA, but one that suffers from that bit of vinyl. Otherwise, it ain't too bad.

Yeah....the Shipwrecked Captain's Copper....not so much. It pours a cloudy amber with thin to non-existent head that is leaving a small spot lace. The virtually no scent and the taste is very bland. The mouthfeel is lighter in body and weak carbonaiton. Overall not a beer that will win many awards.

Reviewed from session notes.

Pours out a copper-amber clear color with a disappearing head and no lacing. A light aroma and flavor of toasted bread are almost completely obliterated by an onslaught of diacetyl butter, sticks and sticks of butter. SO MUCH BUTTER. Even the body has a greasy oily buttery texture. Drain poured after half a glass, I just couldn't handle all of the diacetyl. Memorable for having the most butter in it by far out of any beer I have ever tasted up until the date of this review, it even exceeds the allowable levels granted by an "English" style by more than a factor of ten-fold.

I do not agree with this beers style designation, so I'm not reviewing it as an English brown ale. I'm reviewing it as an English pale ale and notifying the Brothers

Simple, clear, copper colored brew. Not much foam after pour, but a strong film of foam that leaves some good lacing. Bubbling is pretty good too.

Very faint toast and a little grassy hops aroma.

Maybe some toasted crackers, hard water minerals, dry resin hop pellets that maybe add a flavor of grass. Weird adjunct bitterness. Palate is watery adjunct bitter, and flat feeling.

Bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Clear copper (weird) hue. Small head forms after a rather aggressive pour. No lace.

S: Buttered bread is the main aroma coming out of the glass. Hint of dark fruit and a touch of grassiness.

T: Thankfully the flavor doesn't feature the butter as much as the nose. The roast malt profile comes through giving it a good amount of coffee hints. Toffee, caramel and a slight hop bite in the finish.

M: Light body with a good amount of carbonation.

O: Once past the nose this beer isn't bad. Nothing special but drinkable.

captain's copper, shipwrecked (door county)

a 3 clear, ummm, copper. yay, got that part right. hard pour fails to raise more than 1/8 inch of head. a little lace is deposited before the last of the bubbles dies a watery death.

s 3 first thing i thought when i sniffed this was "diacetyl" (however it happens to be spelled). caramel overlaid by a fruit loopyness overlaid by heavily buttered popcorn and werthers candies.

t 3-3.5 the butter is in the house, but fortunately it only coats the roof with a thin sheet. lightly sweet caramel flavors are overtaken by a noble hop bite in the finish.

m 2-2.5 pretty flat, kinda watery, but better than the blonde i tried to drink a few weeks ago. whoa that sounded bad.

d 3-3.5 doesn't quite excite, but better than the blonde specimen.

12oz. bottle poured into an imperial pint. Thanks to beerwolf77 for the continued bounty from Door County!

(A)- Pours a clear copper amber color that produced a good white frothy head with good retention. Some lace left behind.

(S)- A nice aroma of caramel and a dry nutty component.

(T)- Very similar to the smell. A mellow caramel sweetness. Finishes with a dry nutty walnut aspect.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. Mildly sweet, with a big dryness. Very mild hop bitterness.

(D)- A good drinking beer for the fall season. Straightfoward, but does this really fit the style: drinks more like an amber than a brown ale in my opinion.

Draft. Slight copper color with a little red. Slight head. Again, very little aroma coming from this. Off tasting flavors. Bitter ending. Medium mouthfeel. This brewery makes the claim that they are the only craft brewer in Door County, which is probably true, but it doesn't make their beer any good. It was served in a plastic cup too, fyi. Thx Shipwrecked!

12 oz bottle poured into a Sprecher nonic. No date or info.

A - A vigorous pour brought out the Captain's true beautiy; a fat cream head with great retention and absolutely superb lace that covered the entire glass like foamy suds from the tides of the sea. The beer also featured a beautifully clear copper color with mild carbonation action.

S - Like the Bayside Blonde before it, Captain's copper has a nose full of buttery diacetyl. This one is almost stronger and reminiscent of my movie theatre days making super-buttery popcorn (my batches were to die for!). Behind that, the beer hints at toasted caramel malts covered in a layer of dust which is not so pleasing.

T - The flavor follows the aroma to a deep, dark cove the captain should sail out of. Lots of butter corrupts the faint toasted caramel malts and light, earthy hops that faintly appear towards the back.

M - Slick and smooth once again, Captain's Copper has a light carbonation bite to the finish. A tickle of bitterness accompanies the dryness on the swallow.

D - How a beer can look stunning, possibly the best amber I've ever seen, and still be this bad is astounding. I wish it wasn't off like it is but such is the way of finicky beer. Following in the blonde's footsteps, the Captain isn't offensive but doesn't deserve my time.
