Shared this one at a recent Random Sunday Tasting! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured dark brown with a minimal off-white head that subsided to none quickly. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt sour, tart, cherry, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, cherry, earth, tart, fruit, and wood. It had a light feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. I really went into this one expecting to have something special. While most of the components here were decent, nothing really stood out to take it to the next level which was rather unfortunate. This was definitely one of the cases where some more carbonation would have helped this brew out quite a bit. Worth your time trying this one, but I wouldn’t personally trade big for it.

Share by someone at a recent tasting, thanks. Beer served in a snifter because it was handy. Beer is thick, dark brown / black with a thin head, low carbonation, low retention.
Aroma is boozy, bourbon, oaky, and malt.
Beer is medium to thick in body, creamy and sweet with a nice finish, it is a little vinous and things like that. It is good and I'd have it again if that were possible.

Pours murky brown, almost no head or bubbles from an extremely aggressive pour. Perhaps this shouldn't have had an aggressive pour, as tons of chunky sediment hits the beer as I get about 3/4 of the bottle poured. I did get some minimal lacing as I drank it.
Smell is extremely tart fruit and funky, winy, with brett.
Taste is even more fruity tart, if possible, but there is some sweet, which changes where it's at with every drink. However, the tart still dominates almost all aspects, leaving a lemonheadesque feeling in the back of the jaw.
Texture is very wine like. Kind of thinnish, a bit dry, with almost no carbonation. Not so easy to drink, bordering on a drain pour for me.
Well, I won this at the brewery for Xmas in July, but I would never buy this. I can see it has value as a sour/wild, but it's not my thing. That being said, I didn't rate it too bad, as I know that it's lives upto the sour category pretty well, just not as good as the RR brews.

Yet another beer I tried at the DC Lost Abbey Tasting. Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.
Appearance: The beer pours a reddish dark amber color with no real trace of head.
Smell: Red berries and roast with some vanilla and a mild brown sugar sweetness.
Taste: Tart red berries and roasted malt. I'm getting the vanilla and brown sugar sweetness here as well. There is a bourbon note showing up too. The finish is rather tart.
Mouthfeel: The body is a bit syrupy. This beer is pretty darn flat with a dry finish.
Overall: This was a very nice beer. I thought all the flavors went well together. I'd have another given the chance.

Pours a dark red with a small head leaving decent lacing.
Aroma consists of caramel notes with a lot of added Brett.
Flavor is very interesting. Has a distinct sweetness that I identified as maybe being special B. Whatever it is, it starts off with a sweetness and loads of caramal/toffee with notes of leather and tobacco. Just when the sweetness peaks, the sourness overwhelms it and finishes very dry. Very great contrast between the sweet and sour.
Medium mouthfeel and surprising amount of carbonation for a LA beer.
Not the best beer in our lineup of sours, but by far the most interesting. I really love the way the sweet and sour mixed in.

Tap at Armsby Abbey for Lost Abbey takeover. This was my fav beer of the night.
Has a light fizzy head, super murky dark maroon almost cola brown color.
Nose has a nice bourbon, oak, sweet malts, brown sugar, maple glaze, dark malts, caramel, toffee, hint of dark cocoa, light tart funk.
Taste is more bourbon, oak, brandy soaked raisins, syurps, caramel, toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, then soured brown malts but a nice soft feel, hint of more dark fruits, hint of cocoa and stout like dark malts. Finish is tart and dry, almost flemmy, more sour fruits and malts, raisin, bourbon, and a bit of booze.
Mouth is a bit fuller bodied, decent carb, hint of warming booze.
Overall delicious, a nice blend of the sour tart fruits and nice stout flavors, all done in good proportions. Then add the oak, vanilla, and awesome bourbon, done very well and super delicious.

Sampled August 2011
Stored in the fridge since release. The beer pours flat as expected without a hint of carbonation or a head. The beer is a dark, burnt amber color that isn’t quite black, but that shows a clear, slightly purple tinged, deep amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of nutty oxidation, a touch of sherry as well as a tartness and dark fruit character up front, but this is backed by a touch of a spirit / oak edge to it in the finish. Aromas of dark plum, rich red wine like fruit notes, spicy and peppery oak, buttery Bourbon barrel notes, touches of vanillin and a warming alcohol note in the finish are all quite present. A quick swirl of my glass releases a musty, sort of musky, slightly stale sweat like, funky, sort of over-ripe cheese note that isn’t a dominant note but is definitely noticeable. Swirling the glass actually shows that there is a hint of residual carbonation in this beer as there is a hint of a wispy head the lingers ever so slightly.
The beer is a bit sweeter than I was expecting, though it is not overly sweet, this accentuates lots of raisin and dark berry fruit notes that make me think of red-wine. There is actually just a hint of carbonation texture to this beer, it is mostly flat, but there is a hint of effervescence that keeps this from seeming flaccid. There is a touch of nutty, oxidized malt character here that mixes with a light roasted malt character that is diluted enough to not seem burnt, but does have a deep toasted graininess to it. The finish really tastes quite strongly of red wine, with lots of fruitiness to the beer (it leans a bit richer towards sherry or port rather than your typical red wine) as well as some spicy, slightly astringent, toasted woody character from oak. The long finish really reminds me of a nutty sherry mixed a touch with a touch of rich port character. The tartness here is actually pretty nice, it is not enough to make this seem like a sour beer, but it is definitely tart; this is mostly lactic, but does have a touch, or perhaps more of a suggestion of acetic acidity.
I was really expecting to not like this at all, but this was executed very well. I think it could use more carbonation, it still should be light, but still could use a hint more.

375ml poured into a NB globe.
A: Beer poured a murky chocolate and burgundy shade with a small tan head that left a touch of lacing through out the session.
S: This has a very unique nose a mix of sour and old ale. I get a fair amount of dark fruit and cherries that plays nicely off the brown sugar and molasses malt back. I get a hint of leather and tobacco intermingled with some brett funk. No hop presence to speak of.
T: I get quite a bit of the oak barrel mixed together with some sour funk. There is a nice balance between the two with leathery tobacco flavors mixing with the sour (grape skins?) to create an interesting profile. Slight hint of vanilla mingles with the alcohol as it warms.
M: Carbonation is a touch low but not to bad considering Lost Abbey's reputation. The overall mouth feel was good. Not a lock jaw sour by an stretch but still quite tart and refreshing.
O: Overall this beer had a great flavor profile and was a very unique sour/wild ale. A nice blend of sweet and tart that I would highly recommend.
